My favorite weekly game, Gianmarco Soresi gets one degree closer to Dropout. For real, Nick Kocher is connected in so many ways to so many great random things.
as an autistic therapist the highly sensitive person discussion was hard to listen to😭 for example on the eye contact thing-- autistic people actually are shown to take in MORE sensory information than allistic people, so the idea that autistic people are unaware or uninterested in people around them is just not true. HSPs truly just sound like autistic people who don't fit the stereotypical definition of autism and aren't currently captured in the diagnostic criteria. autism as a diagnosis is very new, constantly in flux and has been historically extremely limited in the populations it observes. plus most of the people defining autism are not autistic and thus have pretty poor interpretations of what is actually happening in the autistic brain. (think the way that colonizers historically described indigenous people -- you can describe the same event or symptom but frame them very differently). autism is very heterogenous and while i'm sure reading the highly sensitive person book can be helpful, I think the distinctions between autism and HSP and the reported "misdiagnosis" is more likely just a reflection of Dr. Elaine Aron's bias and internalized ableism than actual meaningful differences between the groups. Not to mention that she benefits financially and professionally from inventing a new label like HSP and branding it as a unique phenomenon she has special insight on rather than acknowledging that it is actually autism which has already existed and there are many resources on rather than just her book. TLDR; everything Nick described as HSP symptoms are actually also autism symptoms that you've probably never heard of.
THANK YOU!!!!! I also had a hard time listening to this section as an autistic person. And I’m so happy you mentioned the internalized ableism cause like yes. While folks throw around the word Autistic a lot, they’re often still perpetuating extreme ableism so it’s this weird thing where it’s brought up so much that all these folks think they know what they’re talking about but oops poops they’re being ableist as hell. (By these folks I mean general pop. Like regular folks in the space. Not the author of the book. She’s different haha) Like… there’s nothing wrong or bad about being autistic and honestly shit like HSP just reinforces the idea that there is.
Understanding the distinction between Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be nuanced yet crucial. HSP is characterized by heightened sensitivity to stimuli, often manifesting as emotional or sensory overwhelm, without necessarily involving the broader social and communicative challenges of ASD. While some traits might overlap, such as sensitivity to noise or textures, ASD typically involves more pervasive difficulties in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours. Critically, ASD is recognized as a neurodevelopmental disorder with specific diagnostic criteria in the DSM, whereas HSP is not formally classified as a disorder. It's often viewed as a personality trait or temperament variation rather than a clinical condition. The confusion arises because both can involve sensitivity, but their origins and impacts differ. ASD arises from neurological differences affecting how the brain processes information and interacts socially, whereas HSP relates more to the nervous system's heightened response to stimuli. Understanding these differences helps clarify why one is considered a disorder and the other a characteristic, highlighting the need for nuanced support tailored to each individual's needs.
@@dylanblue2271I'm sure that HSP might be helpful modality for some people but there is literally a subcategory of autism spectrum disorder called 'Sensory Processing Disorder' which covers much of that HSP sensitivity criteria
@@rosemarymcbride3419 I'm HSP. I don't have any problem with processing my heightened senses. I'm very empathic and very good at noticing and differentiating minute details both in people's behavior and in the environment. I've only started having problems with visually busy environments and loud noises since developing chronic migraines.
This was a wonderful episode btw. I loved the reflections on therapy and mental health. It all felt hugely relatable in different ways. I've ordered a copy of The Highly Sensitive Person already.
Yeah that whole segment I felt like he was describing my childhood, down to the socks! I called them "grumpy socks" and still it takes me forever to sort out my shoes and socks to make sure they're comfortable and even.
@@Katiebartl I didn't know it, but it turns out HSPs are a real thing. Maybe you know about it already, but if you don't seriously look into it. It's unlocked quite a lot of stuff for me - ua-cam.com/video/2tKDnsns2bg/v-deo.html
@@Katiebartl Yeah I looked into the HSP thing afterwards, and it's completely real. If you relate I would advise looking into some youtube videos. It has unlocked a few things for me.
I came to the comment to see if anyone else guessed that, I'd bet good money on it given Nick has already appeared on Game Changer and there's an episode of Cash Grab with Sam Reich!
The "we're just going to lie now?!" after a bad performance resonates. Ive learned i prefer the "yeah you did shit. But thays okay" approach. Edit: Typos(probably still missed some❤)
One of the best episodes; they're funny, you guys are funny - insightful, interesting talk. Truly crazy that this podcast only gets a few thousand views. 1:29:22 really cracked me up!
Hey, Nick, Grant O'Brien's best friend and Karen Gillan husband! I love Britanic! These two men are so smart and funny! Russell and you are so smart and funny. A perfect pairing.
When I’m really stressed I like to watch Alex Honnold’s Free Solo because I think “at least I’m not hanging off a giant cliff thousands of feet in the air with no rope” and I feel better
1:21:55 That’s not really a superpower; that’s just an ability. Superpower kind of implies something that’s not possible without supernatural circumstances (e.g., Superman flight or Mystique from X-Men transforming)
Woah, I loved Hitman. Absolutely thought Glenn would be a one note actor but he’s clearly got chameleon skills. Maybe if he was a theatre teacher it’d have been more believable?
Nah, you're totally wrong about Hitman, Gianmarco. Linklater is a brilliant film-maker. It really doesn't suck. It was made incredibly cheap. It's extremely well crafted.
Feedback on the set feels like dangerous water 😅 But know I say this with love and you can totally ignore it...behind the guests couch to the right of the youtube play button the imbalance of empty wall space really bugs my brain when watching, and the two lttle frames behind the guest on the left look like they are hung too low as the couch and persons head cuts them off. Brian and Nick were fabulous guests and I really enoyed your conversation and rapport! ❤
Okay, I'm still gonna keep watching because I love the pod, but I thought based on the title that there would be an actual real life alien story, and I am heavily disappointed that there is not ☹️.

Prophets. Oracles. Seuthsayers of naysayers.
Jaw dropped when they said that
setting your physical calendar in the studio to july is the kind of sicko easter egg that makes me love this podcast
Love the convo at 1:38:00 when they're brainstorming how to make the sketch work. So fun to watch people collaborate.

I like when russell laughs
That’s always my favorite!
