    This was a joy to watch as well as listen. Two great ensembles - the singers and the musicians. What is telling is how much fun (or was it joy?) the King's Singers had in performing the song.

      ES difícil ser extranjero (sobretodo anglosaxonico) y querer cantar interpretando el tan específico criollo portugués. Soy portuguesa y conozco bien el acento característico del criollo y el acento de lusoafricano-hablantes que aún se parece a lo que escribieron en estos villancicos. Este cantar sería tambiénuna caricatura de los pobres esclavos negros, o simplemente niños. EN los manuscritos viene "escrito en léngua de negro", lo que tiene mucha gracia.

    Excellent! What instrument is the flute type one?

    • @MrPoupard
      @MrPoupard 9 років тому +1

      Not sure if I'm answering your query but the improvised (?) solo played by the gentleman is on a cornett - an instrument often used along with sackbutts (trombones) in the 16/17th century. The cornett's usually played by trumpet players today due to the mouthpiece.

    • @AllGrowing
      @AllGrowing 9 років тому +1

      Thanks a lot for your quick response! Yes, that one, cornett, I love the sound - could be the wood - and he played really well. Have a great day/evening!

    • @davod220
      @davod220 9 років тому

      MrPoupard
      That flute is anything, but certainly not a cornet. A cornet is a trumpet-like instrument and is a brass instrument, not a flute. :D

    • @MrPoupard
      @MrPoupard 9 років тому +3

      Davo D The instrument on the recording is a cornett, NOT a cornet.

    • @ToddSF
      @ToddSF 7 років тому +6

      Sorry, Davo D, but there was an instrument called a cornett, now an ancient one with no place in the modern orchestra, and it has nothing to do with a modern brass cornet which is similar to a trumpet, with three valves. A cornett, also known as a cornetto, is always wooden, but with a cup-shaped mouthpiece requiring lip vibrations against it to produce sound, the way modern brass instruments are. The cornett often has leather covering the wood, and the mouthpiece is typically carved from natural animal horn. Finger holes similar to those on a recorder control the pitch. Cornetts could be straight, but more often have curvature and the one in the video does and is typical. There is no doubt whatsoever that what is seen here is a cornett. The cornett was used in the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods and faded from use around 1650, but its use has been revived in performing ancient music from those three periods. By the way, it isn't a "flute" as you called it, because a flute produces sound either by blowing across a mouthpiece hole, much like doing that with a glass bottle, if it's a transverse flute held crosswise, or it uses a fipple in the mouthpiece and produces a sound the way a whistle does. The cornett, as I mentioned uses a cup shape mouthpiece held against the lips and the lips are vibrated to make the sound -- so you can't classify it as a flute.

    One issue to consider: it's a colonial piece meant as imitation (one could say mockery) of Africans (likely enslaved people). So, there's racism in the piece. Is it right to ignore this background?
