    Good product and useful for a variety of applications. A bit pricey for me but a homebrew version is a feasible project.

      Totally. In fact if I were to home brew something like this, I’d make a fan dipole and have the elements come off at 90degrees to each other

      It’s always that balance between efficiency and ease of use though. I don’t mind the loss in the traps as I can QSY without touching the antenna. 73!

    Thank you for responding to my email via a video Jonathan 👍. In the last week we have built a duel-band inverted-v for 40/80m using DX10 and spade connectors to split the elements. Managed to get into Cal's Friday morning net just gone on both bands.
    Would like to venture into building my own traps as changing bands could get tedious.

    Must be an iPhone if the battery 🔋 is running out. 😉
    Personally I prefer M&P dipoflex and used with a Alpha Delta dipole centre these work great. I'd just fan it, other than weight, size for carry packaging not sure what the benefit of a trapped version may offer. 🤔

    Nice video. Just wondering does the bare wire going against objects branches, leaves etc cause any issues and exchanging the wire for something like cals dx10 ant wire make winding up and storing easier. Good inside to what's out there for portable op,s.
    Iam hoping to try bicycle portable from our beach this evening using cals 10m travel pole on 40m cw/ssb. Look forward to your next video, 73 zl3xdj

      The DX10 is ideal for portable being lightweight and flexible. Iv set up an inverted-v with it several times in the last week and only the paracord has given me gyp.

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX 2 роки тому

      Hi Brian, from a performance viewpoint it shouldn’t make any difference. I prefer covered antenna wire, and I did wonder about changing the wire for DX10, but the construction of the antenna doesn’t lend itself to changing easily. Good luck with the bicycle portable operation! 73.

    Hi Jonathan great video. The budget is way out of my reach for this one. I plan on making a linked dipole for 20/40m also a efhw. I plan to be portable station just struggling still which rig. Would like a ft818nd and xiegu x6100. I like the idea of built in atu but I am sure the quality of the X6100 isn't as good as the 818.
    Will you be doing an antenna builds videos?

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX 2 роки тому +1

      Hi Motters, in the near future I plan to go back to the same spot with a vertical end fed half wave for the 20m band. A linked dipole is also a good option and would work very well. I can’t comment on the X6100 as I’ve never seen one, the FT818 thought is very nice, if a little dated now. I’d put performance above ATU as when you’re dealing with QRP resonant antennas are far better than ATUs. 73!

    • @Mottersmotters
      @Mottersmotters 2 роки тому

      @@M0JSX thanks for the feedback. Yeah I have to agree the 818 is dated as these Chinese radios are coming on the market with sdr I have considered the G90 but the screen on the X6100 is heading towards the ic705 but half the price. I get having a resonant antenna is key but at a pinch could tx on a wire fence if needed 😂 with an atu. So yeah that's where I am stuck, go with 817/818 built like a tank but dated or go Chinese as the have a scope to look at but need to take more care. I only want to use qrp voice.

      @Motters Motters Hi, I run both FT8181nd and the FT817nd .... agree that they are build like tanks (which always instills a bit of confidence when out portable), but as Jonathan says, they are a bit dated. Have a friend with the X6100 and, having played with it, I can honestly say that the main attraction for me is the waterfall display, not the atu, at QRP levels, resonant antenna is the aim. That having been said, I prefer using my FT817/818 - a personal thing, I suppose (a bit like choosing a fishing rod amongst hundreds of the same rating, you choose the one that feels good to you). Performance is fine on both these radios, running the FT818nd as a home base through a pretty compromised wire antenna I had hastily thrown out the window, I successfully worked the US and Canada as well as Asiatic Russia during the WWCQ contest last autumn.
      If money was no object, I'd possibly try to add the IC705 to the arsenal - simply can't justify the expense.

    I was right with it until the price. I think I'll stay with my homebrew linked dipole for portable, it's only a few minutes to swap bands. I've never been a fan of traps and have always thought a fan dipole is better. 73 thanks for the review.

      It isn’t cheap, and can probably be made cheaper. Unfortunately the shipping costs involved in getting the product from the factory in ZL to the UK push the price up considerably. 73!
