Welcome back Joel. That was a very quick turn around for Koiai, which I love. These are seriously talented musicians. I like this fusion style and hope they continue it. Only a short time will tell with their third album release. I honestly enjoy many genres to include the harder Nemophila sound, but this is still right up my alley. Looking forward to the album release and their first tour (whenever) that might be. 💙💙
Music on this one written by guitarists LisaX and Hazuki (who is also still the guitarist in Nemophila), and lyrics by LisaX. I personally love this jazz/pop/shred they do, this might be the best blended song from Koiai for my tastes, tho I love when they get heavier & eclectic like in sections of A New Picture. Big hope for these ladies getting more and more fans worldwide 🤘🎸💃😎
Thank you, Tim! I couldn't agree with you more! I'm tired of people taking pot shots at Kotono! Over the past two years, there has been an amazing transformation in her vocal abilities. She's working really hard to become a better vocalist; and she is achieving that goal masterfully!
Kanade Sato is a prodigy on the drums. Starting to perfect her craft at a very early age under the guidance of her father. Winning a drum competition for 13-18 yo at 13, her percussion accomplishments are world renown. This new song is an example of her mastery of the drum kit.
My favorite new band since 2001. I like all their songs. The best thing I can say about this channel, is that you didn’t stop/pause the track, so major kudos on that. 👍
I mean all the instrumentalists are just second to none at their talent level. By the way, bass is by Wakazaemon, yeah that Waka from East of Eden. All of these ladies are freaks on their instruments. I love this band.
It just feels refreshing. Something about a light touch of jazz that reminds me of Jonathan Livingston Seagull in flight. Who knew Kotono was such a front woman when she danced and screamed for Babymetal and also sang and danced for Eddie Ionbunny?
on the fence at 1st thinking it's a Jpop singer with a backing band Then realised it's a JROCK supergroup interpretation of popular music . Hope they record their albums like a steely Dan record. Imagine the live shows and concert films. Excited what could be, the return of pre-protools yacht rock. Music is alive and well.
@@robertturner8040 I wouldn't doubt if the girls composed the music seeing the level of music education in japan and fans still go to record stores and buy hardcopy. But I got to agree with Joel that japanese middle-aged hi-fi geeks got to be involved in the composition. I'm hearing glam band country 80s teen popstar jazz progmetal in the tracks. I could see them play monterrey jazz festival Austin city limits just easy as a aftershock festival.
I could easily see them in any of those locations. I’ve never heard anything disparaging from Nemophila on their SXSW performance. However, as a fan I noticed weather, scheduling and skyrocket hotel costs as potential issues. Still many Japanese bands perform at the festival and I personally think this fusion would play well in Austin. Just an opinion.
@Maxmaidiac do it all is my thinking. In the era of youtube why wouldn't you go after fans outside of metal ? Steely Dan is famous for some of the best mixed albums in existence. Koiai direction in style music lends itself to the audiophile crowd. Haven't got my hands on a copy yet. Crossing fingers that they pay attention to the mixing.
There are no producers or songwriters or people pushing this band, the songs are writte by lisa-x and also hazuki, the lyrics by lisa-x, I don't even think they have a label yet, it is all self promoted and self made
I really love this band hey have a cool vibe going. Kotono has a great voice and personality. You could tell she was something special from her days in Ironbunny. I like faster paced songs as well, but this band can mix it at any point and surprise us. If you are looking for something else too latch onto, I would recommend checking out STMLT and their latest song Antimental
Hi Ramair! There's been an extremely significant improvement in Kotono's vocal abilities in the past two years! She is up to par with all these other great ladies here! She is nailing it here! And our illustrious reviewer here doesn't know what he's talking about! And Ramair, you're certainly more diplomatic than I am about this! Hang in there, Ramair! Best Wishes! Russ
It has a jazz flavor. Nice changes in the rhythm (Kanada Sato’s drum syncopation), some technical parts (Li-sa-X’s guitar shredding), while Kotono gets you on the feels. Hazuki and Wakazaemon add to everything as well: it’s good stuff. Supergroup? I would definitely think so. Come See Me will appear on their upcoming EP, which they said will be out soon. I still need to hear it to decide on them, as I wasn’t into their older stuff. I just like this song and A New Picture. Hopefully they go more in this sort of direction, and if so, they can be a favorite.
Actualy Hazuki here that is playing is not the one that left Nemophila she plays in both bands . Koiai are Looking like they could be some thing very special .
WTF, did I say a "touch" of jazz? This to me is one of those spectacular blends of several genres. Each of these stars plays and record's with many other stars. Check out The Jazz Avengers, you liked Juna the bassist.
I think Wakazaemon is on board as the #5 with all the "X" posts, and playing bass in this track, and, as she mentioned working on other songs. Btw, this is about where their musical wheelhouse lay, hoping they go more from prog jazz/pop rock to hard rock/metal. Thanks for sharing! 🦍🍌
Yes, could be the same kind of issue that Miyako (Mi-ya) was facing before joining Lovebites - she was mentioned as "support musician" for some time, probably for contractual reasons only.
seems to be contractual things with EOE and Marty's band keeping from her been an "official" member from what ive read...her social media posts indicate she loves playing with this group
"Kinda got a supergroup goin' here..." Y'think? Best-in-class level players at several positions... And while I agree that it's cool when someone leaves a band you love (like Nemophila) but ends up doing something cool, that doesn't apply in this case: it's Hazuki playing here, not Saki. Although that said, Saki's solo stuff has been excellent and coincidentally has included the _other_ best-in-class drummer from this niche, Senri Kawaguchi.
Hi David! I'm a little confused here! We're talking about Koiai and you're bringing Saki and Senri. I don't understand what your statement is connected to. Please enlighten me, I've missed something!
This is where the child prodigies Kanade Satō and Li-sa X ended up as they tipped into adulthood. The prodigies don’t just give up, and they also hold onto their jazz licks
Hi Joel! Once again, I disagree with you! Kotono's vocals are amazing! I don't see any disjointedness between English and Japanese! She handles it well, with a phrasing similar to Shade. Be honest with yourself! You're not into a four-four Jazz-Pop with an almost waltz-like tempo! Koiai is experimenting with diversity and that's a good thing! These ladies are the best of the best, including WakaZaemon; who is not being credited as a member of the band. I can't wait to see what they do next!

Drums in this song really stand out. She’s fantastic.

Can only hope for a Steely Dan inspired Album. Surely if they got deep into SD they could do some similar songs.

Hands down, Koiai has the most potential of any band I've seen.
