The legendary Herbie Flowers on bass. He played with a lot of people back in the day, including Bowie.

Every time I hear this I think of that scene in Goodfellas where he’s running from the police helicopter.

Drum solo was the fire, then starting with the bass all the other instruments jumped into the fire.

Used to great effect in Goodfellas.

Back in the day, Nilsson was all over the air waves! He had some other hits which I've thankfully forgotten!...😉...heard WAAAYYY too many times--it's good stuff, though! I don't think this was the "radio-friendly cut"; I don't remember the musical interlude, with the drum solo.

Thank you. Your review led me to go back and listen to the entire album. A couple points come to mind. Herbie Flowers played the bass. From Wiki ‘According to Flowers, he began loosening the bottom string "for a laugh", believing that by that point in the song, the performance would be faded out on the released recording.’ The drummer was Jim Gordon, a great session drummer during the late 60s and early 70s. He was the drummer in Derek and the Dominos. Unfortunately he suffered from schizophrenia and alcohol abuse and whilst in a psychotic state killed his mother and ended up in prison from 1984 until his death in 2023.

Damn, I loved the voice effects, but then again I grew up listening to it like that, lol. 😄
About the bass detuning, I just copied this from Wikipedia...
The bass part includes a section where, following Gordon's drum solo, Flowers detunes as he plays. According to Flowers, he began loosening the bottom string "for a laugh", believing that by that point in the song, the performance would be faded out on the released recording.
