- Recently I decided to try boarding my reactive dog Remy at a kennel while I was out of town.
In the video I'll be talking about how to chose a boarding kennel for a reactive dog, the unique drawbacks and issues that come with boarding a reactive dog, and how to prepare your pup to increase your chances that he'll have a great time!
We'll even cover specific questions you should ask boarding kennels while narrowing down your search, how to evaluate the facilities, etc.

Long story short my boy KeNai(American Bully)had to go to cargo and be quarantined for 30 days in Hawaii. It was the most stressful situation for both of us. When I went to visit him at the quarantine shelter, his bark was very raspy like he's been barking for hours. Poor guy didn't know what to do without me. Ironically 6 months after, I became a positive based dog trainer and now I know what to do to make KeNai feel stress-free.
Aww thanks for taking such great care of KeNai! I actually drive across the country w Remy every year and was hoping to fly this year, but learned that no airlines allow you to fly pitties or pit mixes due to their issues w overheating. I’m surprised you were able to get him in cargo at all!
Thanks so much for sharing this! I've had to board my dog before she became reactive and it wasn't a great experience - she was quite stressed. Since then I've stuck to boarding with experienced rover sitters who live in a quiet house and neighborhood
It's definitely tough on our sensitive pups :( Glad you found a solution that works for you and your dog!
Wow, you were able to bring him inside the facility without him losing his mind? That's... significantly better than our dog would do :(
We spent most of our time outdoors and when we went in I just kind of barreled him through. I think he was so overwhelmed he didn’t put up much of a fuss - at first anyway.
I'm boarding my reactive Pom in July. I'm so nervous! I got him a suite like you got and have warned the kennel to test him out with other dogs first. He is okay with other dogs off leash, and I do have two other dogs at home. we should be okay but I know he will be hoarse too when he comes home. BTW I have a cat named Remy. great name! 👍
I hope your little guy has a good time! And tell your kitty hello from a fellow Remy ;)
Amazin video. Thanks so much for the honest info! Im not ever gonna board mine. He'd be a wreck but its good to think about for an emergency. Im on my second traumatised rescued Greyhound mix/Lurcher. Theyre super sensitive. Thanks again. Im loving your videos and have passed the walking reactive dogs one onto the rescue I get mine from.
Thank you so much for the support and for sharing! And thank you for rescuing. I know how much work our sensitive boys can be!
What is I already had my dog in boarding for about a week. And after I pick her up I found out that she had been rubbing her nose on her kennel door and now I noticed she has a strained whine and bark now.
Poor baby! Unfortunately it’s hard to know how your dog will handle boarding until you try it :/
Im first!!
Wondering if your dog is people reactive. Mine is, and I dread of leaving him in a boarding place - do you know any stranger-danger type of dogs boarded with no incidences?
I would say maybe moderately people reactive. He has some stranger danger but is generally much better outside the home. He's always fine with vet staff, boarding folks, etc, it's more visitors inside the home he struggles with.
I would say talk it over with a boarding facility you are considering. They are usually pretty experienced and knowledgable, I think they could help you assess if it'd be a good fit or not.
I know sometimes you can't take your dog with you but putting him on a shelter like facility sounds insane. I would expect my dog to have severe stress induced backlashes. At home she's only alone for four hours max and walked for 2,5 hours a day. Putting her in a kennel for (almost) the whole day is such a high risk and I cannot believe that any dog could enjoy it. I would always suggest finding a sitter who will keep your dog at home like a normal family dog.
Many dogs do just fine boarding. But Remy is not one of them (and it sounds like neither is your dog)!
How long did you leave him there for?
Just two nights!
which breed it is ?
He's a pit mix
