The main attraction for which tourists come here is the healing mineral water. There are 132 springs here, but only twelve of them have the most pronounced healing properties.
Karlovy Vary is the only place in the Czech Republic that was spared the plague. Not a single city dweller died from this terrible disease during the epidemic. In other cities you can find “Plague Pillars” erected in memory of a terrible disease. It is also a sign of the burial of the dead. But in this city, the “Plague Pillar” was installed not far from the Church of Mary Magdalene as a sign of deep gratitude to the Creator for the health of the townspeople.
Every year the resort hosts a famous film festival. Everything is in the best traditions of such events: red carpets, luxurious outfits, camera flashes, spotlights, celebrities arriving in expensive cars, fans.
Local spas are based on the use of mineral water with medicinal effects, which occurs at a depth of about 2000 meters. Water has a beneficial effect on the treatment of diseases of the liver and intestines, stomach and liver. Water with the compound Na + CaSO4 60%, which bubbles up at a temperature of 73°C in a hot spring with an intensity of about 2000 l/m. The mineralogical composition is about 5.9-6.5 g/l, with a CO2 content of 0.375-0.750 g/l.
Karlovy Vary produces the famous herbal liqueur Becherovka, which locals call the thirteenth medicinal source. A museum is dedicated to the author of the herbal tincture; it is called the Becher Museum. Here you will be told about the history and properties of the healing drink, and will also be offered to taste the liqueur prepared according to several recipes.
Vřídlo is the heart of Karlovy Vary, the most important and hottest geyser of the resort. Its temperature reaches +72°C. Thanks to the spring, the baths are supplied with thermal water, and famous local cosmetics are produced based on its waters. All other hot springs of the resort, in fact, are its branches. The famous fountain with a jet height of 14 meters, which has become a symbol of the city, is also one of the branches of the geyser.
