I bought this game and find it wonderful. it has very high quality components, the graphics and cards are excellent, and frankly, the replay value is outstanding. it's a great game to play when you cannot find someone at the same time or place. it's got depth in the details, but the process isn't overwhelming like some aviation games can be. A+ game and suggest that you can find all you want regarding aircraft or ordinance on the internet if you're one of those rivet counters who needs the extra details. this game has a nice, not overly complex manual.
I’m learning that “complexity” of board games is entirely relative and opinionated. This game may not be overly complex compared to other aviation board games but compared to a lot of others, specifically the ones I play, this is outta my league. I just bought Down In Flames and its going back to the store, still sealed. These DVG aviation games are over the top, for my pref.
These sorts of games, despite being advertised as solo, are actually really fun to play cooperatively (especially because you have someone else to help with keeping track of everything and fiddling with all the chits).
Thank you, Tom, for that review. I appreciate your ability to consider the quality of the game and not just your personal preferences.
Being raised on SPI and Avalon Hill games, I have a somewhat different perspective. So, this one goes on my watch list.
Y'all keep up the good work.
Was expecting to see Marco doing the review and not Tom :) Good review mate. Thanks for posting.
Good review Tom! I have the original incarnation of this game which was published by GMT games. It's very interesting to see the differences in production over 20 years.
Thanks!
This game is high on my wishlist, it looks like a very entertaining game. I like how it has a campaign system, that increases my buy-in and immersion in a solitaire game, which is needed as solitaire games are just random puzzles. The components look very good, and I'm impressed that it has a mounted board.
Great review Tom! For those wanting more detail from a wargamer's perspective, check out the review by (occasional Dice Tower contributor) Marco Arnaudo, together with his three part set of videos showing a sample Hornet Leader mission. You can find them under his profile: marcowargamer
Joe should have reviewed that one, that's what he's here for!
Whoa, I was expecting Joe Steadman, definitely didn't see Tom doing this one.
The strength of these games is the planning and easy modding. Not possible or easy on computer games.
I can understand Tom's POV... but Tom... PLEASE... some of us don't have students, gaming groups, and your buds on the Dice Tower... some of us have NO ONE to play with. Besides, only one of you guys is sort of a wargammer on the board. Why didn't you have Brunsheen and the boys review this game... it's their bag, after all.
Love the attempt though... you did it justice and gave it some good points. I bought the game and can't wait to learn it...
wouldn't this be way more suitable as a computer game?
For people that think Tom sh#$@ts on games because they're not "his type of game".
i dont think that this game is going to make it into my collection. great concept....i dont think i like the game style.
