- Garuda Linux - From Ugly To Beautiful | Look & Feel Customization
I believe Garuda is one of the best Arch linux distros available today. It comes packed with tools and apps that make switching so easy. But if there is one complaint with Garuda it is the look. People seem to be disinterested in the Sweet or Sweetified theme and find them a bit overwhelming. I show you how to fix this in 10 minutes and make the distro look simply amazing. Take a look and let me know what you think in the comments below.

From a novice aspect, I say this is a great instruction set in a tutorial. Highly relevant and at the right pace. Thank you for your time, effort and coin for producing this video!
i made a mistake that i removed latte dock while not realizing latte dock has an option to not ruin the maximized windows. so when i removed it, i went into kde configs and turned off borderless maximized windows. overall great video!
garuda linux should be more recommended for gamers and newbies in my opinion. im personally arab and came from windows and i find this distro most interesting when i was thinking of what distro to use. not only because its beautiful, but because its based on arch and it has useful beginner tools and ways of not making it break so easily. snapshots always save me whenever something wrong happens.
Well, i actually did the opposite 😅
I made my arch KDE look like Garuda (without latte of course).
Gotta Love Linux, SO many choices, so many customisation's and so little time!!! Thanks Troy
Most distros: let's spice it up with some theming....
Garuda: We dropped the spice bucket all over the place. Un-theme to your taste.
Hi. Your videos are amazing. Actually this video is pretty useful for my friend who's new in linux. I helped him to install garuda Linux (he's a gamer) but there wasn't enough time to configure plasma style the way he want
You forgot 1 thing in this guide, it's the GTK themes (they are used in pamac and etc) You can change it in plasma settings. Thanks for the video!
(P.S. sorry for my bad English)
What are you talking about... It's ALWAYS been beautiful!
Thanks you fixed the whole system for me and make it easier to use great job man❤
Man you solve my problem that minimize button and also solve many other problems in one video
I can install Garuda linux again now but I'm currently running cachy OS which i also like
Love and respect from Pakistan
Thank you, brother. Never could digest Dragonized...
I had problems digesting it as well. Hope you and your family are well.
I will watch this video in reverse whenever I setup any desktop with kde. I am new to Linux and wanted to customize my kubuntu like Garuda. Here it is just backwards 😂
Garuda is beautiful out of the box idk why some ppl say it's not
Since KDE 5.27 Garuda automatically provides a recommended option to move away from latte as this will be out of support soon. Your video is great to see how easy it is to modify the look and feel in KDE, but I love the look and feel from Garuda and will never switch.
With the latest KDE Update, Latte Dock is no more in Garuda! That panel was buggy and I didn't like it. Now it's been replaced with the Garuda dock instead of the Latte dock.It even pointed me to a web link on how to add in the top and bottom panels. No more Latte!
I'm not sure if something has changed since you made this video but the version of Garuda I installed did not have Latte and I can't find the settings for disabling support borderless windows.
Thank you! For me solus budgie and elementary were the sweetest
I totally agree with you on the wobbly windows and magic lamp. Running macos mainly, I always switch the minimize effect to scale rather than genie!
For those who don't know: Unlike other distros Garuda is setup so it uses every drop of your system resources from start not like other where distros use system as needed. I used garuda for short while and i can tell you that it's not something you can use on older laptops and computers. You don't need monster of a computer to run it but it does have to be beefy in terms of hardware.
How to make your Garuda Linux distro feel like Mint. I love it!
If you don't like this version of Garuda, just install the vanilla version, which does everything you have "undone" in this video. Better still, just build what you want from a Vanilla Arch install! I like the Garuda top panel, latte dock and icon set. It's what makes it look good!
Great video Troy! Thanks for sharing it with us!💖👍😎JP
i like it the way it comes, but to each their own.
Other than the look and feel of Garuda, I ended up having stability issues with it on the particular laptop I was using it on. I ended up putting Nobara on it and even though there's still some issues with error messages (these are Fedora issues), the Nobara team have done a tremendous job with updates and stability issues. Even from using Manjaro, Nobara is miles ahead on battery life in sleep mode.
But tutorials like this are great regardless of distro as you help people learn to customise their desktop easily.
'Cause KDE is KDE, amaright?
@@k.b.tidwell Right!
Thank you, Changed that pinkish purple. Love Activity screens. How do I resize app screen & save that size as defsult not big on icon , happy w/ right click app menus. Haven't graduated Garuda frm learning laptop to the PC due to No IRQ Vector startup error & a on screen shutdown error I have to capture. Thinking about trying Nitro based on your review. But beleive were I more savey I would be able to make most Linux Distros behave the way I want it to... For mere mortals understanding the frame work would be helpful, Latte? (Found what Wayland is) Editing Config Files with Vi? I haven't posted in Garuda Forum yet bc I don't want to be accused of being a 'help vampire? ' 🙉 Great video
You have similar settings in Gnome to change those very things as well.
Ugly to Beautiful is Subjective. I like the color scheme, you may not.
Great video, it was wonderful to get rid of the childish theme of garuda. Thank you
garuda dragonized is not ugly bro! i think is pretty cool, vs xfce, vs mate, vs all, i know u can install and make all the distros looks like the same but the ZEN KERNEL! the utilities in hand!, the easy to use! is not ugly is pretty to beautiful!!!!
I wonder if I'm the only one that thought it was hilarious he changed everything to look different from the default.... and then picked a wallpaper that would've worked with the default theming so well :D
Thanks for the video! Really great manual for newcomers like me. And the best part is, it helps to configure any KDE distro.
What? I think the icons and colours are the best thing about this.
I kinda like the icons 🤷♂
I don't know why people complain so much... Garuda out of the box is so beautiful and unique..... Millennials these days have problem with everything
Its not millennials bitching about Garuda's looks, it's old ass, permanently grumpy, long time Linux users who are calling Garuda ugly and also complaining about how much memory and hard drive space it used. Personally, I like how Garuda looks and I can't stand the Suckless Nazi's so I'm not bothered by how memory and hard drive space it uses.
Funny, I always thought of myself as Gen X, being born in 1980 and all
Fix My Laptop keyboard fake account from india...
Yes, I agree with you that Garuda is beautiful. If I am using it for my home pc for gaming and watching, I like the aesthetic. However, if you use this for daily driver at your work/business and have to present something to a client / potential business partner, it is better to go with plain old fashioned look as depending on who you are showing your screen, the default theme can either take away the attention or make it look like you are not serious.
Recently, it had some change in the gamer edition, because some of the desktop graphics is not updated and it gave performance problem and it was removed, even so I think that all the options are valid and beautiful 👍
Icons are the same as the icons on my radio in my car 2022 kia k5 10.25'' screen, looks modern too me
I do love Garuda icons, but i change the color-based minimalized-maximalized button back to symbol-based (X, V, A).
Then i return the single click command to double click, also some other.
I did a mini review of Garuda Bird of Prey Dr4gonized KDE in my channel 😅..
I've never heard complaints about the look of garuda. I always see people wanting to install just because of the look without even knowing what they are doing. The complaint I DO hear often is that latte takes up too much resources.
i prefer endeavour os because you get to pick your DE at the beggining, less extra installs and after typing yay -S bauh in the terminal you get a nice gui package manager so no more terminal to install. its my favorite version of arch. i will be trying garuda soon just because but it just seems like extra work to fix to look right
i actually installed Garuda for the looks 😀
Thank you for the video commenting for the algorithm
Regarding icons, I'd suggest Simply-Yellow-Cirlces (or -White-)
Nice, looking to be switching from windows to Garuda Linux soon waiting on getting some PC parts CPU and RAM going with my RX 6600 for a time until i get my new one AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
I have been looking at switching from Windows to Linux, too. I am currently waiting on an AIO and a secondary drive. I will also be running a 7900XTX that I got for an excellent price.
Yeah, doing things the hard way... always so fun. Get the Dr460nized version (which is all about that look) then strip off everything that makes it different than normal KDE... lol
Well, after trying MANY distros, I had gotten to what I felt was the pinnacle of a rolling distro, BigLinux. It's about the system functions, usability, etc. Garuda is a bit better, but as much as I wish their look didn't distract me while working, it does. HOWEVER, when I get around to replacing Win11 on my gaming laptop I'll probably leave it as-is for the energy.
IMHO, the heavy customization really hurts their adoption. Most people get frustrated with this and quit and never see all the other work put into this distro. Wish they would add a toggle to revert these settings when changing themes.
I'm curious to see what is so Good about Garuda. I thought it was nice when it first came out- but don't like it AT ALL now. Lookin forward to this.. THANKS.. GREAT VIDEOS as usual.
That's gonna prove useful!
I DID WITH KDE NEON! I wouldnt do this with garuda btw, but with KDE neon it is fabulous!
Nice!
I really like the look of Garuda, with the one exception, the candy icons or whatever they are called are terrible. That's the first thing I do is change the icon pack.
i dont think i have add/remove software in my garuda linux installation. what app is it btw?
If you go down to Garuda assistant it will let you install several different package managers.
Another great video. However, I just reinstalled garuda linux and don't have the Latte dock anymore to restore the max/minimize buttons options you show in your video. I think Latte is no longer part of Garuda. Do you happen to know where I can find those settings now?
Latte dock is no longer part of Garuda and I am having this same issue. How can I fix this. I just need to make it so that the windows buttons do not try to be on the new dock.
Thank You Troy, I change dragonized to garuda lxqt because of RAM consumption and more settings hehehe but I love garuda
Not liking how a distro "looks" is a pretty feeble complaint to be honest..this is why we have customise options.
why don`t you start with garadu kde light (not suported) en bild it up
doing things the hardest way possible is more fun?
It's my understanding that dragonized has different functionality by default, which you would need to add back to get the same result. Unless that's changed since I used it.
Can you also remove the ANNOYINGLY SMALL window controls on the upper left: open clothes and maximize; and put them instead in the upper right the way Windows has?
Can you add a SECOND or third desktop or workspace environment, to a particular version of Garuda Linux?
If you have Mint, can you get that latte and colour theme that garuda comes with?
Can you ADD multiple desktop or workspace environments to a particular variation of Garuda Linux?
For example, if you're using KDE plasma, HOW do you add the GNOME desktop?
Any recommendations on daily drivers ,using mabox after ny nobara broke, had to choose between cachy and mabox but not enjoying mabox anymore help please

I'll second Troy on Big Linux. It is a very smooth experience for me with a lot of user convenience baked in. BUT, I gotta' say that after dual-booting the latest Garuda a few nights ago...I'm seriously impressed. I'd asked Troy about a non-Debian distro with a toolset similar to MX and he pointed me to Garuda, and it's true. They have a pretty good system utility setup in place and I think I like the feel of it better than MX.
Garuda may edge out BigLinux for my daily in this regard, and it's (at this point) a guaranteed Win11 replacement on my Acer Nitro gaming laptop whenever I get around to a nuke and pave there.
I'm not totally against Garuda's look, but between my stumbling around the last few days and this video, I've got it so that I'm not feeling distracted by the environment when I'm working now. 😅
For me I like Garuda (like they have their own browser, additional Garuda custom tools...), but yeah it's annoying that they force kde plasma with those ugly icons, MacOS style dock, and animations for things seem different a bit (for "start menu")... While yes they do have stock KDE as offering it's probably not super supported (as in "you're on your own")
I myself want to move away from Manjaro (i set wallpaper as plain color and after some time it gets reset to default KDE, and other things)
They don't force it, just look at all the other versions of Garuda in the download list. You can install Garuda with basic KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc.... Picking apart the KDE version with full theme and bling is kind of redundant.
Hmmm I'm not sure what the kde advantages are over Gnome but I'm not having any problems other than not knowing where everything is, Yet but I love how cleanly switching between multi app widows works so far. Guess it depends what you use it for? A comprehensive manual? 🤣 I'm just lucky not tethered to Windows. Other day I was doing something & got scared my keystrokes were being monitored then I rembered my laptop no longer has windows on it🙉 An aha moment, I'm ok.
Sooooooo beautiful...No complains...
Recently a lot of stuff just refuse to work smoothly on garuda. The first time update is broken, you have to dig in to find out why, steam store page doesn't load, and a lot of sites doesn't load out of the box even though the firewall is off. Not as user friendly as they claim it to be.
What if all i wanna change is the mac style window close, minimise, maximise buttons to a windows style
really need an update on how to do this in the new version of garuda dragonized. it doesn't use latte.
I almost want to switch over from Arch proper to Garuda, but should I? (Considering that Garuda still customizes a lot of things that I normally use the command line for.)
If you WANT a dock- you can just add Plank too - right??
Can you not change the icons without changing the theme, or removing the latte bar???
How do we get back desktop icons (home, trash, mounted drivers)?
Yeah garuda itself is pretty good looking its just comes down to preference.
Garuda is beautiful just as it is.
how can i force to show TexStudio in just a bright window? Changeing to Breaze bright dosen't worked.
I got Garuda Linux Dragonized version yesterday. I can't find options to configure or edit profile in konsole. I'm using fish shell. Please guide me how to edit profile because the current background is irritating to my eyes.
can you explain how to set up nvidia drivers and tools please ? it's just this that "block" me to switch to linux
From Garuda to Base Arch 😁
6:05 ...What? 🤯
Can u make a new guide?Latte dock is nowhere to be found.
seconded. Latte dock is no longer part of Garuda Linux and I am trying to find how to stop the window buttons to go to the panel when I maximize the window.
I went buuf icons, changed colors themese, kitty terminal with powershell10k and zsh
UA-cam please stop tolerating trolls on this various pages to avoid bullying if you keep listening to our complaints against harassment, slander, bullying, violence, hatred, bigrotry, etc.
If I keep latte after choosing the windows thing I can keep the buttons right?? Lol I’m night by my pc after the shower I’m gonna try xd
I come from Windows and searched over a hour to fix the missing buttons and switched to Manjaro KDE... 😒
I HATE the way it looks....so unique....I want it to look like all other Linux distros I'm a stubborn nerd ehhhh
Will there be further development or will be removed after some years
Can we change its Start menu syle?
Garuda is one Amazing Distro but its does not recognized my ASUS brazil Abnt Laptop Keyboard...so im on Manjaro,And Linux Mint....
I personally think Garuda Linux looks WAY BETTER than Windows especially Garuda XFCE it looks DEAD LIKE Windows XP in the form of a modern Linux if you want a similar Windows XP experience please definitely try booting Garuda XFCE!
Are folk not aware that Dragonised is only one version of Garuda? They have other simpler-looking versions. Why would you choose Dragonised then undo all the theming?
Yes but isn't the functionality simpler too? When I last tried it, I'm pretty sure that Dragonized had advantages over other versions that went beyond theming.
@@justinmarcus1049 Oh, I don't know about that. I thought it was the same Garuda under the shiny shiny hood but I could be wrong. Perhaps there are other optimisations. I just don't get why someone would specifically choose Dragonised then dismantle everything that makes it Dragonised when they could just opt for a version with more subtle theming - but that's assuming it is the same OS underneath. If there are other perks then I could understand why.
this, it's so absurd to me that they don't just have stock KDE as an option. All they have is KDE-Lite which removes all of the utilities too IIRC. If you want a highly stylized distro fine, go for it, but at least give people an option for the default experience. One thing I will add is after removing latte dock it still had a hook for my application launcher hardcoded into kwinrc (it might have been a different file but I think it was kwinrc) that I had to manually remove for my application launcher to function properly
They do have stock KDE as an option
@@thomas.alexander. as far as I've been told or been able to tell after a good hour of researching all they have is "KDE-lite" which ALSO removes their utilities.
@@robonator2945 it just doesn't install them by default... you can install the ones you want pretty easy.
@@AyaWetts through what process and where is this listed or explained, at all.
@@robonator2945 through pacman or any other GUI front end you want to install for it. Where they explain it? I have no idea if they even do with Garuda, but its not Garuda specific. Any KDE distro may or may not have some KDE apps and you can always add and remove them.
WTF!!! Graruda is the most beautiful distro out there. Why would you want to ruin it?
With my new 7900XTX, 7950X, and Asus X670E ProArt motherboard, Garuda installation freezes immediately after displaying the first line that it's starting. With Mint, I had no trouble with installation but I had to manually install the AMD graphics drivers to get beyond 1024x768, probably because Mint is still on kernel 5.15. I tried upgrading to 5.19, but I couldn't boot so I rolled back. With Zorin, I had to force the drivers to think it was installing under Ubunto (as Zorin is not supported directly) but I was still stuck at 1024x768. I don't recommend Zorin anyway as the UI is WAY too dumbed-down.
Why not just install the normal kde garuda instead of dragonised?
Is the cinnamon desktop available for garuda?
Yes
BTW, Garuda just dropped Latte Dock due to its lack of any maintainer. You may want to redo this guide...
I just did this video yesterday in the most recent version of Garuda.
@@eBuzzCentral Turns out that the version on their website wasn't the most recent. That version was from October. I can send you the most recent ISO if you want.
I'm running it on a b-link mini pc, it just updated yesterday.
@@eBuzzCentral That's wierd. I installed Garuda on my new desktop and the first (and older) ISO failed at boot up. The second worked after a long wait.
The second dropped Latte Dock due to no maintainer.
I'll have to take a look at it, but I actually have two different PCS running Garuda, and both of them still have the latte dock that I've removed
Garuda fixed the things by own
In builds without Latte I've had to edit ~/.config/kwinrc, setting BorderlessMaximizedWindows=false and then reboot to get the menus back to normal.
Ha, I love the way it looks 😂
What distro do you use as your daily driver?
FreeBSD
It's not ugly. It's different.
Dam he destroyed Garudas Dreams 🙃
Please make a video on the same fix on latest garuda update
anyone has Garuda as dual boot here?
I do with BigLinux for comparison. Functionally, it's a bit nicer so far, and the toolset is a good bit broader.
Hello
Garuda looks amazing! You have poor taste 🤣
