  • It's time for a bit of a distraction from the Silver Jubilee Bonneville and focus a little on the Power Set. The B25SS is a great regular rider at the moment and is reasonably presentable, but the paint is driving me crazy. Here's why.

this takes me back right back to 1976 when i bought my first bike which was a 1971 bsa 250ss exactly like this one with blue paint and a grey frame.

Cheers TG. A rare machine as there was only one batch of 146 Flamboyant B25SS bikes manufactured for the Home and General Export market, not the US. So yours was definitely in the same batch as mine. No one really knows why the colour was dropped.

@@BSAPowerSet Wow! The most exotic bike I have ever owned nearly put me off motorcycles forever. Unfortunately I was just a teenager without the skills, knowledge or tools to keep it running for more than a few days at a time. It seemed like I pushed it more than I rode it. I sold it to a more capable mate who sprayed it black and ran it for a few years until he bought a t140 bonnie. As far as I know he never sold it and JWE 8J still exists on dvla register.

You have come against the same hurdle of me Angus . Painters letting me down or just plain not interested. So in disgust, I bought myself a decent Devilbiss SRi Prolite gun and air-fed mask and never looked back since. One thing I can thoroughly recommend are the German made Spraymax gloss 2k in an aerosol clearcoats. Absolutely superb fan pattern and finish. Contains isocyanate though so needs proper mask. I told my friends dad about them and he was a pro auto sprayer for years but he had to agree how good the finish turned out when he painted my friends tank using them.

Thanks for the interest and informative comment. I do have a gun and compressor which I purchased with other parts from a deceased estate but not the facilities for spraying at the moment so let's see how the rattle cans do. I will play with the gun at some point. Thanks again.

You have me wracking my brain now if my 1970 Starfire in a similar blue was metallic or not 🤔

Hi and thanks for the interest and comment. Flamboyant Blue was listed as a B25 colour in 1970 so it could well have been although I've opened up a can of worms I think as to whether Aircraft Blue was similar or the same as Flamboyant Blue or Flamboyant Aircraft Blue!

Looks as though someone didn't like block sanding bondo topcoat. It's hard, dirty, dull and time consuming work but to has to be done. I wonder if BSA literature from the period had tank color matches done in comparable PMS ink that would make things easier. At any rate you've got serious work ahead for that B25. Good luck and press on!

I hope it's not too much Bondo John - it looks more likely that the original chipped paint surface was not prepped at all! Well we'll soon find out if the side panel comes out OK first. There were factory swatches and the Triumph ones still exist with one supplier but I'm don't know the if BSA ones survived or where they are.

I have just had a look at my one and only photograph of my brand new 1971 250ss Gold Star in blue and the tank BSA decal is definitely solid white unfortunately I can't see the side panels for my leg astride the bike ...

Thanks for the interest, comment and anecdote. How fascinating. The sales leaflet definitely shows gold lined badges and other publications document the same. I’ll discuss this in a clip. Are you able to take a digital photo of your original and forward to the channel email bsapowerset@gmail.com so we can include? It is also documented that during 1971 BSA did mix and match things to hand regardless of official spec. Thanks for contributing.
