Nirvana played Smells Like Teen Spirit with a backing track but live vocals and completely ruined the performance because of it. Essentially, if your record company or the artist were forceful enough, they could sing live.

A bit weird I know but if you were on Top of The Pops it was almost a necessity that you were to lip sync. There were a few exceptions when the band refused but TOTP never endorsed singing live as their true intention was to sell singles as it was heard on the radio.
