Old Hindi Film Songs by K L Saigal & Pankaj Kumar Mullick | Songs From The New Theatres’ Era

“Songs From The New Theatres’ Era” is a gold mine of old Hindi film songs from classic films produced by the New Theatres’ production company such as Dhoop Chhaon, Manzil, Vidyapati etc featuring Prithwiraj Kapoor, Pahari Sanyal, K L Saigal and many such stalwarts. New Theatres was an Indian Film studio and production company which was formed in 1931 by the legendary B N Sircar which became one of the largest film production unit of India. Sircar believed in team work and thus had a dedicated pool of artists who worked in his production such as Prithwiraj Kapoor, Pahari Sanyal, K L Saigal, Pankaj Kumar Mullick etc. This particular collection “Songs From The New Theatre’s Era” boasts of songs from various hit films like Dhoop Chhaon, Manzil and Vidyapati.
The most significant among these would be the film “Dhoop Chhaon” released in 1935 starring Pahari Sanyal directed by Nitin Bose. This was a remake of the old Bengali film “Bhagyachakra”. This particular film was path breaking for Indian cinema because this was the first Indian film to use the playback technique. This compilation has two songs from the film “Dhoop Chhaon”. The first is Prem Ki Naiya Chali composed by R. C. Boral and sung by Pahari Sanyal and Uma Devi. The second song is Prem Kahani Sakhi composed by R. C. Boral & Pankaj Kumar Mullick and sung by Uma Devi. These songs became a key factor for the super success of the film “Dhoop Chhaon”. Another great song in this compilation is from the film “Vidyapati” released in 1937 directed by Debaki Bose which had a huge star cast comprising stalwarts like Pahari Sanyal, Prithwiraj Kapoor, kanan Devi etc. This was one of the first Biopics of Bollywood based on the life of the great Maithili poet Vidyapati where Pahari Sanyal played the lead role. The most popular song of this film was Darshan Hue Tihare which was composed by R C Boral and sung by Pahari Sanyal. Another important film in the New Theatres’ era is the Pramathesh Barua directed “Manzil” released in 1936 starring Pahari Sanyal and Prthwiraj Kapoor.The hit song from this film was Sunder Nari Pritam composed by R C Boral and sung by Pankaj Kumar Mullick. Another gem in this collection is the hit song Nukta Cheen sung by the great K L Saigal from the film Yahoodi ki ladki.
