    There is a company that visit crick with water filtration saying you can clean and use dirty canal water. If you can't then they shouldn't be allowed to sell it. Water companies filtrate the water that comes from our taps which will have all sorts going down the drains.

    The water filter solution is common amongst Vanlifers who don’t always have access to fresh water to fill their limited water tanks but their sources are usually streams, rivers and lakes rather than canals. The tech is well proven and works. BUT like others I question why do it when canal water is not really suitable and CRT water points are plentiful? I’m looking at the same tech for a recirculating shower so I don’t use fresh water every time I shower, rather fill a small tank from my main tank once per week and use particle filters and a UV lamp to make that shower water last and reduce demand on the fresh water tank. If the CRT ever decide to bill us for water by the litre, it might be a popular choice.

    If so, I hope you secured it with an additional cross section, otherwise you would have compromised the strength of the roof, which is usually only 4mm steel.

    I'm glad you said it (about the water system), lol. I'd be really suspect. My limited experience is with "simple" fish tank filtration, and that's bad enough, requiring a ridiculous amount of maintenance, upkeep, cost of use. Instead of filling up at water points, she'll be buying filters, having to store them, install them, dispose of them, etc. And like you said, potential for leaks...

    I'm with you James, I'd just prefer to fill up from the tap, rather than all that filter nonsense. If I was that paranoid about running out of water then I'd have an emergency 10 or 20 litre container as backup. But there are enough water points around the cut that it's not like you're never going to fill up with water. Even then, if you have a 10 litre tub you can always make a cheeky request to nick 30 seconds worth of water to fill that up and be on your way. Not many people would make you queue up to fill a 10 litre tub.

    If the water in the canals was really that bad all the fish would be dead and the water fowl wouldn't live on them. People assume it's really bad because of the brown mirky colour of it but that's just because canals are shallow and the locks are constantly opening and closing which stirs up the silt all the time. There are some small dead end sections of the canals which rarely get navigated so aren't exposed to the constant churning and those areas have crystal clear water. Plus there is the daily influx of fresh water into the canals. I still wouldn't want to filter it but it's far less toxic than many people assume.

    The filter system shown is not the same as an ocean going "Water Maker". The latter uses a very expensive "Reverse-Osmosis" system that has a extremely special membrane that ONLY allows water molecules to pass. Everything else does not pass, including the salt that is diluted into the ocean water. It uses a high pressure pump that is about 5 to 10 times the size of the one shown. Most systems back flush the membrane to clean it, which uses some of the water it just made. In the canals, it would be back flushing a lot. In the ocean, systems can make a few gallons (3-5) of water (12 to 20 liters) in approx ten minutes time. In the canal, can only estimate that it would be half that, maybe less, with the extra back flushes.

  • @DEmma1972
    @DEmma1972 Рік тому

    The water system is great and should come down in price if more people used it, however, its just not viable on a canal because of the cost of instalment and maintenance cost which is ongoing. The space it takes up also just makes it a no brainer (IMO)

    What's the point of an insulated flue? The only reason I can think of is so's not to burn your hands, but that applies to the stove itself, which is still naked. A flue like yours gives off heat to the cabin space - surely better? I can vouch for the dire filthiness of canal water because I'm a rower and was once catapulted by my oar and the wall of a weir we were in danger of whitewatering into the R. Soar. I became VERY ill.

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
      @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Рік тому +1

      I think that it is the only reason !! My flue provides loads of heat which is great so I also don’t see the point in an insulated flue. Also the kids have never once touched the flue and burnt their hands so that’s not exactly an argument either.
      It is however meant to be safer. The area around the flue doesn’t get so hot especially where it meets the roof

    • @tmack1
      @tmack1 Рік тому +1

      The two layer flue is suppose to let fresh "make-Up" air come down the outer layer, preheating it. The Make-up air replaces the air that the heater's "draft" takes into the heater and goes up the flue. In "theory" the make-up can be ducted into the heater so no room air is used, thus reducing the amount of cold air that comes in the little grilles on the narrowboat's doors.

    I know a couple things about water filtration. The system she had is a great one, but I am wondering why no reverse osmosis was on it, maybe I missed it.
    Now having said this& being a huge fan of water filtration... how quickly does one need to go go go on a Narrowboat?? I mean isnt the point of taking things slower? Meaning taking the time to fill water up? Managing time at each water point? Also is it being filtered when going out? That be the sensible thing to do, no?
    Next just imagine people doing this.. it would totally f with the amount of water esp in summer time.
    One huge issue & I mean huge issue with the rather complex water filtration systems is, that they arent cheap to maintain. Unless one has infinite money to throw at it, for years and years, it makes no sense. Its may be cheaper to fill up the water tank with bottled water from the store, cause replacing these filters cost dearly. The more they filter the more each one cost. It is also not a smart investment on a boat (a house maybe, it depends what Country, temperature and water quality). No one is gonna be impressed if she ever sells this boat. No one is gonna spend extra on this.
    The other question is, how good are these filters with the flexible temperature of water temperature? Cause some filters can not clean properly, and in fact one will ruin them when temps are too low or high. For example in the winter time or on hot days in summer with a low water table.
    One obviously also has to send the water in regularly ensuring it does what it says. If one misses a dead line or best be changed time frame, any one of these filters can get one super duper sick. Also does she need to add salt etc to them? Cause this can create an environmental issue if she keeps it on board and god forbid it sinks.
    Now if she would be a test boat, where a filter company wants to run tests etc.. thats one thing. But to install this behemoth just to be able to humble brag.. she really could have burned the money she spend and saved money that way, cause she wont have any future cost.
    Seeing how dirty the canal water is, the various canals all having a large variety of different bacteria, dirt, fecal matter from animals and people (drunks or idiots), other ppls household dirty water (grey water) and even gas from the boats in it, depending on as I said way too many extra variables to count, plus temperature flexes there is simply put no way for her to archive a true safe drinking water situation unless she adds addt filters. And! And these need to be added to or changed pending on each water rable situation. Which changes constantly as she cruises. So not only can the system never be truly dialed in. It can potentially change so much by the time she needs to filter water again, that she needs as said vastly different filters. Every single time. And before she can use it, she first has to send it in, ensuring she has all the right filters on.. its totally cray cray.
    Esp since she prob isnt a marine biologist or worls for a water sewage plant as a filter specialist..
    I mean sure, okay, if one has money to burn and wants to flex, and humble brag to friends.. look how much money I got to burn.. best yet.. while none of her guests will ever take a cup of coffee or glass of water from her tab.. She probably could have spend it on a live in cleaning lady or buying a brand new boat, or some insane expensive paint or custom made kitchen, or bathroom etc etc. All except the cleaning lady would have even given her a potential investment to raise the boats price for selling it in the future, if the right buyer is found..
    A further clue of why its not a great idea to do this should have been the amount of filters needed vs the amount ocean vessels need.
    She will, in the end for at least 6 month of the year need bottled water, or boil the water she gets from her system to be safe for drinking, cause I doubt her system can handle the flexes safely. Again, constant monitoring of the water she wants to use, is not possible, cause by the time she sends the water in, and gets the results back, to ensure her system can handle it, she will have already moved on - to a new area where she again will have to send it in.
    If shed be stationary- one may have a chance of dialing her system in. But she is moving all the time.
    Most hilarious her argument of wanting to save time. No hon, you want to flex how much better you are not having to do what everyone has to do. So instead you will spend hours upon hours on ur system, and way more money.
    If she was concerned about the tab water, she couldve just bought a water hose that is for drinking water (regular garden hoses are not supposed to be used for drinking water)& a decent small filtration system.
    Best yet she prob didnt even change her water pipes in her boat to high quality ones..
    I cant even stop writing cause I am shaking my head so hard at this.
    Doesnt she have any friends, who couldve told her dhe has gone off the deep end? I mean the very best part of it is, that the company advised against it. Thats a decent Company. Truly. But she still believes she knows more and best? Of course they will take her money. They cant do more than explain to her in more detail what I just did as to why this is simply put a dumb idea.
    Also how much water does on need to have this? One lives this life to ensure less consumption not more.
    Well first time she gets mysteriously sick or her skin has some odd rash.. the last thing she will think.. hmm maybe I needed to change my filters. She will blame the system. Not herself.
    Did they tell her how often she needs to send in the water, change cartridges and how much maintenance is gonna be - and added up the cost for her over a years time? As said she'd prob spend less filling her tank via bottled water.
    Cant.stop.shaking.my.head.
