I grew up in the seventies and loved going shopping in Gateshead with my parents.loads of small shops selling all kinds of things.never been shopping there for years now as the council ( labour) have turned it into a dump.look at the latest fly over issues for the traffic.if only the council had maintained it correctly eh.but they never do.the council leaders should be ashamed of what they have done to the town centre.
The uniqueness of Gateshead the coke works the terraced streets Dunston Staithes the High Street, some buildings escaped the wrecking ball others bit the dust what can you say, I live in nostalgic times
What a wonderful 4 minute interlude! Thankyou so much for such a sympathetic portrayal of Gateshead. In modern times, in some ways I suppose it was in its heyday in the late 60s and early 70s. I have so many fond memories of the place. Just a pity it's become so dilapidated now outside the perimeter of the new town centre.
Thank you Trevor.. Such important reminders of our recent past for future generations to embrace, particularly our local education community. The new Charlie Rogers book is nearing completion and will hopefully include some of these wonderful memories.
I worked at Northern Rock Branch on West Street - (shown about 2 mins in) between April 76 through the long hot summer until Jan. 78. I can see in my mind the layout beyond that frontage. Earlier this year I walked up west street from town hall to Jackson Street. It was totally unrecognisable from the pictures shown - it honestly could have been a in a different town - nothing left of what was there in the 70s
I think that pic shows the cokeworks, which were at what is now Festival Park at the southern end of Bensham bank. The NCB regional office was at the south end of the Team Valley Trading Estate, next to the coalhouse roundabout.
All this country has left now are its memories
Loved the photos. The buildings demolished in Gateshead has not only ripped the guts out of Gateshead but also it's soul.
The good old days ❤

Modernism took a wrecking ball to beauty and thought .
It's unfortunate that more of those non architecturally significant buildings have not yet been demolished.
Not a chemtrail in sight...like i thought there would be
Presently searching for a suitable printer
P.T.E buses
Laws herbal stores was awesome. You could go upstairs and get a real glass of home made sasparilla for 20p.
