      @@adam100x7 it doesn’t really matter which order you watch! the videos are surprisingly extremely different. i originally was writing a really long explanation of how because there is no accurate few sentence way to describe the difference between two VERY long videos but a long explanation might rob the experience. so the best way i can describe it would be: the other video is a “short” and sweet (it’s 3 hours) analysis on troll levels that focuses on the game design philosophy and how video games are art (it’s made by a game designer). it talks about the history as well but it’s less of the main focus. While this video is a very extensive deep dive into the history of said troll levels. It’s still talking about the game design! however less from the perspective of a game designer and more from a historian and fan! A important word in this comparison is “less” since there is still a lot of overlap. they are both very amazing videos

    Amazing video, I had been waiting a long time for something like this.
    One thing about the twice twice trick, though - Buckaroo would probably have deserved a mention, alongside Symplectic. Having gone back all watched through all MM1 troll videos (uploaded by Carl), I saw something I had missed/forgotten. In the video titled "Troll Me Baby One Mole Time", uploaded about 9 weeks before the "Larl does..." video, Carl encounters the twice twice as we know it - he goes through a pipe, hits a checkpoint and falls down to what looks like the start of the level. But he soon realizes it just looks like the starting room, because the key door now takes him to a completely new section/the rest of the level. So while Symplectic took twice twice to a whole new level (macro), it looks like Buckaroo came up with the original idea (he just used it in a much more limited fashion).

    What strikes me about Best Served Moled is how _open_ it is. Modern troll levels shunt you from room to tiny room, while Moled has these expansive platforming challenges with weird secrets and backtracking. Of course I understand why. You need smaller spaces to exert more control, cram in more trolls, hide your troll magic, and streamline the trial and error process. But still, I kinda miss that vibe sometimes.

    This is so awesome! So glad multiplayer got acknowledged in it. It is so true that there has been some multiplayer trolling since the beginning of multiplayer. I remember seeing clips of "everyone gets the flag except the person who hits the on/off" only to have the three selfish players die and the kind player win. I can give a broad overview to fill in a few gaps on multiplayer trolling for those interested below...
    After seeing Carl's snow level that had the stun lock, I got an idea to use that at the end of a level and force players to crawl in slow motion- creating a photo finish. I tested this many times with Chichiri. I completed the level and then it just sat there never to be played. Chichiri messaged me 6+ months later when Juz decided to get a group together to play some troll/toxic levels. I sent the level to Juz. They were shocked to have an actual troll level designed for multiplayer. It was that play session of Juz that really got multiplayer trolling to happen. Soup had a troll level they played and the session went amazing (Juz's laugh is awesome!).
    I had stopped making levels and given up on trolling when Chichiri had messaged me. Now, I got back into building and created another level, and the level featured in the video (specifically for Juz). Juz never played them as he burned out on Mario Maker, but randomly in Dan's chat one day Carl showed up and they jumped in some of the multiplayer troll levels I had made.
    Following this moment, I connected with Trixtan, Defender, and Box to create a multiplayer troll guide. We discussed how to make a quality level that works for multiplayer. What psychology was present in players and even included contraptions to help. The principle mentioned in the video is key- simple trolls usually do not break and players are going fast enough they still miss things.
    Trixtan then held the only ever multiplayer trolling contest (I put in 5 entries...the same as all the others combined). Even though it is doable, most creators have not done much multiplayer. Sadly, getting enough testing to make sure everything works is near impossible.
    With that said, a few other creators have done some multiplayer (peregrine, Soup, Daftlife, and BOX). Also, shout out to all the testers who made any of these levels possible. They suffered through so many broken and impossible levels- RX7Man, Cannibal Turtle, Theorymon, Luqueto, Peregrine and Chichiri.

    With regard to your comment on Nintendo banning glitch levels, I still would say that Nintendo is massively in the wrong, banning levels that have even minor glitches, even ones that one might assume are features such as the incredibly common launcher elevator and pipe stack from smm1. What’s worse is that a creator can get their account fully banned for putting out a glitched level. I honestly don’t think any even remotely influential person in the community would have an issue with it if these levels were just shadow banned (made impossible to find through means other than having the level code itself). While some people do take issue with the idea of Nintendo being anti-glitch at all, that was really never the issue. It was the overly harsh punishment they would lay out

    • @jodysgamingchannel9480
      @jodysgamingchannel9480 Рік тому

      I get where he's coming from though, in regards to the meta. If you want to "do anything", just go make romhacks. I don't disagree that Nintendo is still way too harsh. Imagine if they hired more developers to fix bugs instead of lawyers to sue people, what a wonderful world it would be!

    • @frimi8593
      @frimi8593 Рік тому +7

      @@jodysgamingchannel9480 I still don’t totally agree with that either tho tbh. While from a player-side perspective super glitched levels might seem identical to romhack level stuff, there’s still a massive gap between the two. And I’m my view there’s not much difference between utilizing certain glitches vs stretching certain features as far as they will go. For instance, from a player side perspective that isn’t super familiar with smm mechanics there’s probably no difference between broken track glitches and abuse of entity limits. And since the argument from level meta is exclusively a player/viewer-perspective one, there needs to be a line that you draw from what’s acceptable and what’s not with regards to something an average play might encounter in endless and get confused by. To me drawing that line the thing being a glitch rather than an exploit seems arbitrary. Modern cp3+ setups with red coins are entirely glitch free but will still confuse an average player who’s unfamiliar. In fact, although we don’t see it much in the meta, they can actually be used to make levels that are impossible to clear from checkpoint. To me that is FAR worse than anything an smm2 glitch can get you. When you start getting to level of smm1 with the black hole glitch I start to agree more that it might as well be a romhack, but even then it still feels as though players are just stretching the maker tool they’ve been given as far as they can manage and if that’s unrecognizable from glitchless gameplay than that could be just as much a testament to how far players can stretch the limits of this tool. There have been romhacks that are praised for doing things with their tools that would make them unrecognizable as a romhack and they tend to receive praise for stretching the limits of what’s possible in their own box, I don’t see why we can’t do the same for Mario maker. At the end of the day it’s basically a matter of taste, but one in which I feel the anti-glitch perspective is a bit arbitrary when considering how much you can already do without glitches that would be considered outrageous if done with glitches. You can literally make the flagpole disappear with a magikoopa. That’s a feature, but imagine if it were a bug, it would be considered game breaking

    This is an extremally good video. You were too harsh on yourself throughout most of this. Its not just the length that makes it impressive, but you put in alot of reaserch and effort into making every moment enjoyable.
    Do you think you will ever make a video on the banned wagon? If not, ill still watch your videos.

    5h30 in, and this is so freaking cool. I’ve been watching Carl since the early Mario Maker 1 days, so to see these levels again feels almost nostalgic. So much has changed, makers have come and gone, but we can still all laugh at the simplistic beauty of a hidden block stopping someone right in their tracks. Can’t wait to finish this amazing history recap :)

    58:45 While I do like CarlSagan42's reaction to beating 7 Troly peices, I definitely think GrandPooBear's is much better in this case.
    6:18:35 I love Carl's evolution from "I'm gonna ban him" like when he was anti-softlocked in "The Buppening" to making and enjoying playing the most difficult, brutal and/or tedious anti-softlocks.

    Carl is definitely the most important individual in the troll community. He may not be the most influencial, but he showcased so much, and every time he creates, he revolves the whole community!

    my experience with mario maker was entirely limited to getting the 3ds version, being upset that I had to unlock all the interesting stuff to build with through the "story" mode or whatever it was, getting stuck on one of the levels therein, and then never playing it again ._.

    Thanks for making this! In the spirit of meta, the only thing I want to say about this video is that I think you should avoid the risk of having this style of video define your channel / internet presence. If you end up telling yourself that nothing you could make would be worthwhile unless it's a multi-hour documentary, you'll burn yourself out.

    As a fellow troll lover that doesn’t own either Mario Makers, I’ve been trying my hand at troll levels in Levelhead, and most certainly making trolls is much harder than it looks. However, I feel like I’m slowly getting more of a grasp on the art and having new appreciation for it the more I try, and I’m happy to be a part of building a troll meta here in this game.

    I think the earliest instances of troll levels in Mario Maker that I can think of were the infamous "evil Ross levels" that were basically featured day one on the Game Grumps channel. Difficult, rough around the edges, funny and filled to the brim with Kaizo blocks. Pretty much everyone knew about Ross's levels back in the day, which most likely inspired a lot of players to make (often hot garbage) troll levels of their own.

    I have to admit, watching Carl during the Super Expert era I didn't understand why players enjoyed hot garbage levels; then I didn't understand why players enjoyed "gotcha" coin-flip puzzles until Seanhip2 started punishing players for taking obvious paths.

    I'm mildly surprised you didn't go into Geek's Yeenis a bit more - especially with the complicated use of Entity Limit that makes what is effectively 10? checkpoints possible. maybe you did talk about Entity Limit though and I just forgot. some mentions about Super Wagon World also would have been nice as well (but might be understandable to be absent depending on how long you spent on editing this video).
    nevertheless, this is a pretty thorough documentary that I must commend you for the dedication and time spent into making this.

    It’s 3AM and I finally finished this after watching about an hour a day for the past week or so. I was so pleasantly surprised by someone’s else’s vast knowledge of this community showing up on my feed and so in love with how you portrayed the community here. I got excited seeing seven stupid pieces, carls psychological plains, master and commander, all the classics. Legit this was my avengers. I think you had a marvelous script too. I loved your setup up about choosing this game for Sagan’s choice of media, and especially how that connects back to our Carl. Thank you for giving me a stroll down memory lane!

    Interesting argument at 3:06:00 ish. I wonder how the Year of the Guts hardlock fits into your argument of 'no glitches'. In general, I do agree with you here that MM2 has a set of expectations that come with it, and that's what makes trolls within that paradigm more interesting than rom-hacks. The hardlock in YotG was so game-breaking WITHIN MM2 - i'm not sure where it falls on the scale of 'no glitches'. I'd really love to hear how you felt about it.

    Aside from what people have mentioned about Carl changing the game _again_ with The Year of the Guts, I’d be interested in your thoughts on one of my favorite phenomena of last year - the community experimenting with troll levels in other games, like VVVVVV, Baba Is You, Celeste, and Levelhead. Other noteworthy phenomena: the growing attention paid to the Japanese troll community by English-speakers, and of course the release of Super Wagon World with its own view of troll history and new levels of work put into the multimedia aspect begun with CarlMoney’s trailers.
    Incidentally, one term that I’ve seen used in the titles and descriptions for Japanese troll levels is 騙しコース, “damashi course” - which literally means “deception level”. You can see an example at 8:10:11 - the title says “hajimete no damashi course”, or “my first troll level”.
    EDIT: I lean to calling that troll “stand suc”, but “SMB2 suc” works too.

      Also, I don’t know if anyone’s said this, but the roulette after the staircase anti in Carlsino isn’t quite 50% - Geek has an explanation video that shows how many question blocks there are and how many of them allow progression. Complicating the odds further, there’s a troll in the conveyor-bumper-POW room that Carl dodged on that first playthrough, which teleports you past the pink coin for a forced entry.
      (It hit him in his second playthrough, when he speedran it in 45 minutes. I posted reports in chat of which coins he’d acquired/saved during that run. Then we raided Shoujo. Good times.)
