I'm from Bham but have since lived in Daytona Beach, OKC, San Diego and now Seattle. Although as a metro area as a whole, it is not the nicest place I've lived, the city of Birmingham itself is the nicest city I've ever experienced when it comes to raising a family. For those of you living there.. feel blessed!
Birmingham will always be an affluent area. I did work out there once, while my time out there.....I did notice all the custom built houses and not all look alike. Its true, the roads and streets becomes narrower because of the lots and backyards of the neighborhoods is in acres. Considering I was on foot half the time going to my job, yes its a safe community. I'm not surprise it is now more divers, even though still highly a rich white community. Cheers.
Actually Birmingham's got a pretty interesting mix of foreigners. This is where a lot of people who have been transferred from overseas choose to live.
All I know is me and my friend bike threw downtown bham a lot during the summer and its a rich area! We see 3-5 ferraris, countless bentleys, and a few other exotics each trip!
Man, I was just going there, riding my bike on the sidewalk, it was just so fun, today was a good day in the winter, everyone was out, it was like "Who cares about the economy, this place looks really good."
Many Americans including me are of British descent. Our ancestors named many places in the United States and Canada after places in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.
They are ashamed of it too? I don't know if I'm buying it. The schools for international students are all located in Bham, Bloomfield and Farmington Hills, not Royal Oak. My nieces and nephews had lots of int'l kids in their classes. But thanks for the comments.
The walkability part and the fun part I can live with. But I cringe when I hear some wannabe wax on about how "cosmopolitan" and "sophisticated" Birmingham is. Ick. All that's missing on this guy is a beret and a cigarette holder. Birmingham is a nice Midwestern town. No more, no less. Some of these poseurs have designs that it will be like the upper west side in NYC. Double ick.
