I remember as a small kid in school we were ask to sacrifice our nickles and dimes to buy this ship and bring it to North Carolina. We were pretty poor so I never had many nickles and dimes but I did give what I had. In later years when I could drive I came down here and went through this ship several times. I was amazed at everything, the guns of all sizes, the kitchen with the big steam kettles, everything about the ship was amazing. I was proud of doing what I could to bring this ship home. And every time I came I learned something new. I am 73 years old and if I wasn't in a wheel chair I would go down there and go through it again.
I love this story. Your nickels and dimes gave so much to the community. Last time I was there I noticed they had an elevator. Actually it was more of a lift for wheelchairs. You can't get to certain parts. But I believe you can get down to that mess hall that you hold dear to your heart.
Awesome tour of the ship!
Growing up here in NC I started visiting her when I was about 8. Now at 66, I still get goosebumps walking thru her. Note. somewhere around the 28 minute mark, I heard someone say the front turret doesn't turn. Actually it does. All three could turn together to bring all nine barrels to bear on a single target. It's called a broad side shot. Beautiful weapons of war. God bless the men who served on them!
Thank you for all the great information. It is a treasure for sure. We are retiring in the area. So we are hoping to visit her often
We have seen this ship from across the river in WIlmington but have never stopped by to tour it. So we enjoyed seeing what it is like. We have toured a number of battleships and air craft carriers and they is always fascinating to see. The USS North Carolina is no different. Before my father was drafted into the Army in WW2 he worked at the navy ammunition plant in Norfolk, Virginia where they manufactured those 16 inch shells. His job was to weigh and inspect them. I always consider the engine room as the most important part of the ship. Without the men in the men in the engine room the ship would be just a floating hunk of metal.Last time Iwas at the battleship gift shop, I met the man who was a nightwatchman on the battleship. He wrote a book,Ghosts of the Battleship North Carolina. I bought a copy of his book and he autographed it .On of the front turrets has been stripped of parts that were used when they decommissioned the Iowa class battleships The Navy took other spare parts not only from the North Carolina, but other museum battleships
Thank you so much for sharing his story. I would have loved to meet that author.
Cool :-)

The North Carolina's sister ship, the USS Washington had the distinction of being the only battleship in the Pacific to go 1 on 1 with a Japanese Battleship IJN Kirishima. Under the command of Admiral Willis "Ching" Lee, Kirishima was reduced to a floating scrap heap. You figure at least (9) 16 inch shots and another 40 or so 5 inch hits, it's not surprising.
The North Carolina class was a damn fine example of what a good battleship should be.
Thank you for this great information.
Just came across this. If you have a amateur radio license, you can sign up to operate radios from the ship's comm central (Radio 1) from the Official website or from the local Ham radio club's website, the Azalea Coast Amateur Radio Club. Doesn't cost anymore than you regular ship's ticket. It's pretty inspiring to operate a radio on board and there are a lot of Hams out there who are very excited to make a contact with someone on the battleship!
That is really cool. I'm going to look into that at some point. We are retiring in the area
@@ColoradoMartini Please do! Becoming a ham is not hard and we love to share the experience of the ship. It's a nice, active group!
Got notification 🥰
Thank you Rose
Battleship Texas was the first one that was lunched a float plane on
thank you for the information
My opinion is that all the remaining battleships should be gone through with updated armmunants or technology. As China doing the war drums is now too take necessary action before its too late. They need them for marine Corp landings and would be cheaper than missiles. Plus they take up extra room for storage.

I was shocked by how few likes this video got. This ship and others like it and the sailors that maned them are the very reason that we have our freedoms today. These ships and the brave sailors that operated them were the only thing standing in the way of total domination by the likes of people like hitler and tojo. The navy and all the other branches of the military deserve our respect. But like then the people who serve in the military are a special kind of people. Those that are willing to sacrifice their lives and stand in the way of dictators like Putin, kims ill and zing ping. They are the reason why we are not in concentration camps and having to learn a foreign language. What would this world be like if those people had succeeded? I shudder to think of the tragedies that would have happened. These ships were a show of force and our willingness to use them if necessary let our enemies know that we were not to be played around with. It’s amazing how a ship used for war is now a beautiful thing to behold, long and sleek and still formidable!!!
You are so kind. This is a great ship. We really enjoyed our tour of it and hope to visit it again soon.
All 3 tourettes do turn to fire the 16 inch guns turn the 40mm quad anti aircraft guns were automatic but could be operated manually
Thank you so much for the information
