  • While on a road trip to Paris we stopped over Amiens a beautiful city in Northern France... we also discovered the truly magnificent Cathedral Notre Dame D'amiens (Amiens Cathedral) a splendid 13th Century Gothic Cathedral that is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
It is always fun to find unique gems, cities, or locations while on a road trip and Amiens did not disappoint. Check it out!
The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Amiens (French: Basilique Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens), or simply Amiens Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Amiens. It is situated on a slight ridge overlooking the River Somme in Amiens, the administrative capital of the Picardy region of France, some 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Paris.

Of course you'll have enjoyed the ambience of Amiens. It was the headquarters for several allied regiments during the Great War, including two of the US ones which arrived in 1918. There are several thousand military graves at war graveyards in and around Amiens which my younger sons and I visited when they were 10 and studying the War at history class. It was very moving for each of us. Next time in France try the trip by ferry to Dieppe from Newhaven. It affords the chance to approach Paris along the Loire Valley and the great chateaux on that route, plus the magnificent cities of Nantes and Orléans. Bon voyage. 🇫🇷🥖🧀🍷

You've seen the main things here in Amiens : St leu district and Notre-Dame d'Amiens. Not that it is a small city but city center is quite little compare to 90% of the city which are residential areas. If you come back you can still enjoy the visit of Jules Verne's house and the Picardy Museum. (a small Louvres). But that's pretty much all.

Another awesome video 👍🏻. Don't fall in love with france too much as on Saturday at 7:00pm they will be our arch enemies lol. As you adopted Brits your family is hopefully with us. Waterloo part 2 😂. On a serious note I've learnt something as I thought you just drive through the channel tunnel 😳🤫. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

You must have a tall car, they put you in with the coaches. If you're in a less-tall car they put you in the car-only part of the train, which is double decked with much lower ceilings. That's even more claustrophobic!
Eurotunnel is pretty impressive, huge trains, a huge, long tunnel.
If you want the full-on French claustrophobia experience (round it off after the Eurotunnel), take a drive along the tunnel section of the A86 forming the south-west quarter of the motorways around Paris, between the D913 and the N12. That's a double deck road in a single tunnel bore, and the ceilings feel lower than they do on the Eurotunnel train! Costs something like €5 toll, but it's definitely the fast/quiet route round Paris.

Lots of French cities and towns seem to call their cathedrals Notre Dame I have found on my travels as I assumed after my first visit to Paris 32 years ago that the one in Paris was the Notre Dame not one of many the first I came across was in Rheims Champagne country. I have visited Amiens a number of times to eat while visiting the battlefields. French cities and towns get a bit boring especially when you have seen everything that you want to visit or look at or seeing the same buildings for the 20th or more time, I found this out this year when I went to look round Albert in the heart of The Somme battlefields.

That's a lovely city. I saw in a tv show how the Cathedral was massively protected by sandbags and all sorts of other things during the First World War,as it was in range of the big guns. I'm hoping to visit Rouen next spring then go on to Paris by train. If my circumstances allow.

You were doing so well. And then you went to France. Did you get stopped for non-speeding 30 minutes from the ferry, threatened with imprisonment by les flics, have only cash and hallmarked jewellery accepted for the non-fine because credit cards weren’t acceptable outside a police station and not given any paperwork? (I had a house there for a while. Only the local English teacher spoke to us. We asked the village to stop shooting songbirds on our land. Suddenly, nobody understood what we were saying. Tradition or no, we now owned the land and declined access for shooting. Next day, we were nearly garrotted by an electrical wire strung across the front door with dozens of songbirds attached to it hanging by their feet. It made me think we really shouldn’t have bothered saving them during WW2 … and WW1.
Oh, I nearly forgot. It’s the only place I’ve answered my front door to be held up at gun point. After showing them we had no real jewellery - that now being in the possession of the authorities - they left. Thank goodness for GCSE French! … and being able to stay calm. They did leave with a few cans of Pepsi.)
Central Paris is beautiful. But travel a few miles along the ring road and it’s hard to imagine it’s the same country.
