Porfavor! This is the thrashing of hands and playing quick arpeggios with average picado. Commercial rumba. It's simple, Paco de Lucía played flamenco for the sake of flamenco, not for speed. He became the fastest because he mastered & perfected the technique as a byproduct of his passion for the art of flamenco, his culture. Not for a speed show. He's was and will be the quickest.

He doesn't promote anything but a watered-down caricature of "oh my god, he's playing FLAMINGO". Criticism doesn't necessarily imply jealousy, especially considering that most of the criticisms in this thread are about the inauthenticty of his music. Before you start throwing around words like "snobbish" and "elistist," understand what flamenco is. Know what a palo is, what a falseta is, what a compas is, the difference between a solea and a sevillanas. There's no shortage of good books out there, and plenty of legit players like Kai Narezo, Grisha Goryachev, and Jose Tanaka have free videos out on UA-cam right now explaining this. This guy's "flamenco guitar" is the equivalent of putting on a costume, playing three "funky" chords on a keyboard, and passing it off as "world's greatest jazz pianist." It's opportunistic dicks like this guy who stunt the growth in the popularity of flamenco, and brownnosers like you who speak with absolute conviction and no knowledge don't help.
Boris Katzmarzyk Flamenco is the music , cante and dance of the Spanish Gypsies that has evolved over the past few hundred years from the music of the Indian Gypsies, Jews, and Arabs as well Spanish dissidents. All these cultures had one common foe -the Spanish Inquisition. From this developed songs similar to the Negro Blues about their hardships, called "Cante Jonde". There are about 20 main styles of flamenco some gypsy, some non-gypsy and some adopted from Latin America. What this guy is playing is a very rough version of Rumba which many flamenco experts don't consider to be part of flamenco. Flamenco as we know it today is only about a hundred years old!
Boris Katzmarzyk Flamenco is an art form. the guitar is one aspect of it. There is also singing (cante), dancing (baile), as well as other musical instruments. Within the music of flamenco, there are various different rhythms or "palos". Some of the most popular are Alegria, Solea, Buleria, Tangos, Siguiriya. The different palos have different time signatures and/or qualities. For example. Tangos is a 4/4 time signature. Solea is a 12/8 time signature. What this guy in the video is playing is called "rumba". Some may argue that rumba is not even a real flamenco rhythm. Without getting into a debate, the rumba, as it is played in South America, has a very different feel than the way a flamenco musician would play it. In any event, the guy in the video is a poor representation, whether South American or Spanish/rumba. Even within Spain, the way a flamenco would play rumba is different than another region of Spain - Catalunya where they play rumba Catalana. Getting back to flamenco, the structure and feel of each palo is very different. I suggest that you do two things. First look up any video on you tube with these search words - flamenco alegria beginners. Something like that will show you very slowly how the palo goes and how to practice it. Then go and look for a video that says alegria flamenco Tomatito. Tomatito is one of the more famous flamenco guitarists. Here is a list of real flamenco guitarists. I'm mentioning mostly modern players. You don't necessarily want to be playing like Sabicas, though he was one of the greatest flamenco guitarists. Flamenco is an art, and as an art, it grows, it develops, and it changes. Anyway here are some guitarists to look up. Tomatito Paco de Lucia Vicente Amigo Jesus Guerrero Gerardo Nunez That's just to name a few. You can try matching some of the differnt names of palos and match them up with the different musicians I named. For example, search "Jesus Guerrero Buleria" and see if something pops up. STAY AWAY FROM Armik, Ottmar Liebert to name a couple. That's NOT flamenco. Hope this helps.

@@bensmith2596 a true artist doesn't give a fart about whether people are impressed or not. regardless of the art, its sole purpose is the free expression of a feeling, a thought, an idea. art is just there for art's sake, if people are impressed or touched, that's on them. he clearly doesn't express a whole lot in his performance, so I'm guessing he's trying to impress.

Don't understand the negativity. Why the snobbish and elitist comments ? Are you all jealous that you can't play as fast or as well as him ? Clive Harvey is clearly talented and the rapidity of his strumming is very impressive. His performance is there to promote this genre and captures the spirit of flamenco beautifully and should be applauded. Its critical assholes like you that that stunt the growth in the popularity of flamenco.
He doesn't promote anything but a watered-down caricature of "oh my god, he's playing FLAMINGO". Criticism doesn't necessarily imply jealousy, especially considering that most of the criticisms in this thread are about the inauthenticty of his music.
Before you start throwing around words like "snobbish" and "elistist," understand what flamenco is. Know what a palo is, what a falseta is, what a compas is, the difference between a solea and a sevillanas. There's no shortage of good books out there, and plenty of legit players like Kai Narezo, Grisha Goryachev, and Jose Tanaka have free videos out on UA-cam right now explaining this.
This guy's "flamenco guitar" is the equivalent of putting on a costume, playing three "funky" chords on a keyboard, and passing it off as "world's greatest jazz pianist." It's opportunistic dicks like this guy who stunt the growth in the popularity of flamenco, and brownnosers like you who speak with absolute conviction and no knowledge don't help.

Boris Katzmarzyk Flamenco is the music , cante and dance of the Spanish Gypsies that has evolved over the past few hundred years from the music of the Indian Gypsies, Jews, and Arabs as well Spanish dissidents. All these cultures had one common foe -the Spanish Inquisition. From this developed songs similar to the Negro Blues about their hardships, called "Cante Jonde". There are about 20 main styles of flamenco some gypsy, some non-gypsy and some adopted from Latin America. What this guy is playing is a very rough version of Rumba which many flamenco experts don't consider to be part of flamenco. Flamenco as we know it today is only about a hundred years old!

Flamenco is an art form. the guitar is one aspect of it. There is also singing (cante), dancing (baile), as well as other musical instruments.
Within the music of flamenco, there are various different rhythms or "palos". Some of the most popular are Alegria, Solea, Buleria, Tangos, Siguiriya. The different palos have different time signatures and/or qualities. For example. Tangos is a 4/4 time signature. Solea is a 12/8 time signature.
What this guy in the video is playing is called "rumba". Some may argue that rumba is not even a real flamenco rhythm. Without getting into a debate, the rumba, as it is played in South America, has a very different feel than the way a flamenco musician would play it. In any event, the guy in the video is a poor representation, whether South American or Spanish/rumba. Even within Spain, the way a flamenco would play rumba is different than another region of Spain - Catalunya where they play rumba Catalana.
Getting back to flamenco, the structure and feel of each palo is very different. I suggest that you do two things. First look up any video on you tube with these search words - flamenco alegria beginners. Something like that will show you very slowly how the palo goes and how to practice it. Then go and look for a video that says alegria flamenco Tomatito. Tomatito is one of the more famous flamenco guitarists.
Here is a list of real flamenco guitarists. I'm mentioning mostly modern players. You don't necessarily want to be playing like Sabicas, though he was one of the greatest flamenco guitarists. Flamenco is an art, and as an art, it grows, it develops, and it changes. Anyway here are some guitarists to look up.

Jesus Guerrero
Gerardo Nunez
That's just to name a few. You can try matching some of the differnt names of palos and match them up with the different musicians I named. For example, search "Jesus Guerrero Buleria" and see if something pops up. STAY AWAY FROM Armik, Ottmar Liebert to name a couple. That's NOT flamenco.
