FDA-Approved Drug Restores Hair in Patients with Alopecia Areata

- Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) have identified the immune cells responsible for destroying hair follicles in people with alopecia areata, a common autoimmune disease that causes hair loss, and have tested an FDA-approved drug that eliminated these immune cells and restored hair growth in a small number of patients.
The results appear in today’s online issue of Nature Medicine.
In the paper, the researchers report initial results from an ongoing clinical trial of the drug, which has produced complete hair regrowth in several patients with moderate-to-severe alopecia areata. Data from three participants appear in the current paper; each patient experienced total hair regrowth within five months of the start of treatment.
“We’ve only begun testing the drug in patients, but if the drug continues to be successful and safe, it will have a dramatic positive impact on the lives of people with this disease,” said Raphael Clynes, MD, PhD, who led the research, along with Angela M. Christiano, PhD, professor in the Departments of Dermatology and of Genetics and Development at CUMC.

I know this video is old .. but hopefully they came much further with a cure ... I have suffered from this disease for 16 years it’s gotten so bad lately that I literally only have a small area in the front hairline and have to wear wigs ... this has gave me depression.. it’s made me feel like not leaving my home ... I don’t feel beautiful...it’s horrible. I pray everyday for a cure . Especially because I have a 2 year old baby and if she gets it from me . I don’t know how I could handle that because I know how hard it was For me especially when I was a teenager even now as a 32 grown woman it’s still hard for me so I would feel so guilty for passing that on to my poor baby girl
I had cure three person. Soon i will post a video and images. Also two babys. My sis had thin hair and now its stronger. Two person more has advances in two months. Regards!

I don't understand why they can treat this woman in the pictures and not everyone else, what is OFF-LABEL INDICATIONS ? and why presume anyone is even expected to understand the definition? What if everyone wants the treatment NOW? Including Angela Christiano!? I just don't understand the delay and the 'back burner'.. Who or What is the obstacle?!
I was just diagnosed with this from a scalp biopsy, however, I have NO bald spots. I just have very thin hair. Is there a chance the biopsy could be wrong?

Is there any treatment of alopecia universalies? Hairs come in grey/white roots at some area of but again fall down. Kindly suggest if possible

Ok, maybe I missed this, but just because it's FDA approved doesn't mean it's FDA approved for Alopecia. Take Xeljanz for example. it totally treats Alopecia. And it's FDA approved, but for Rheumatoid arthritis. Not for Alopecia.
I've had Alopecia Universalis for almost 12 years. So I have head to toe hair loss. I'm tired of it. And I'm tired of misleading videos. Although these people clearly have their hearts in the right place, the title suggests they are much closer.

Jarrod Martin i know, i have Areata since 2012 and it is tired, i know it's not the same as Universalis but i know the feeling, but that link and news are bringing me hope, i wouldn't mind if i have to wait 5-10 yrs, at least they are in the way, and since she has the same disaese i know she will find a cure, this seems promising, that link and the articles are giving me life :)
***** I genuinely appreciate your input, and I will research it, but Areata and Universalis are two different beasts. Areata patients often see regrowth through a variety of treatments or even no treatment. Totalis is in the middle, meaning large amounts of hair loss. However, Universalis, or universal hair loss patients often never regrow hair for the rest of their lives. Some do, but these are the exceptions, not the rule. I do not mean to sound condescending at all, again, I appreciate you taking the time to think about me, it means a lot. I just didn't know if you were aware of the differences.

I have had spots of alopecia for 2 years now and i have tried everything nothing worked until now ı am not sure which one is working the *superhairfood alopecia shampoo or superhairfood lotion!!* Because I am using both but on monday the 7th ı noticed peach fuss on all of the alopecia spots; ı was surprised and will continue to use both products.
