You want to put tape around the edges...1. To show your ends....2. So you don't go off the edge and mark the quilt

Thank you for showing this. So awhile back I actually went to my local hardware store and asked if they had any left over pieces of lexan and they showed me the sizes and I got one pretty cheap. I taped the edges, because I ran off the edge once, LOL, and use a dry erase marker and some left over pieces of batting to erase. Its an awesome idea for trying out different designs.
DH wanted to frame a puzzle. The inexpensive frame we purchased would only hold the sealed puzzle. I taped the edges of the acrylic sheet that was in the frame instead of glass and use it for the same purpose.

My handy husband just cut an acrylic sheet into several sizes for me that works great for this. I put painter's tape around all the edges to prevent any disasters. Carolyn Lingor
Thank you so much. What a fantastic way to audition custom quilt designs. Gonna get me one of those. When I'm practicing a new design, I tape newsprint or a cut up brown paper bag on the wall and draw the design over and over.

I use a 20” by 60” piece of thick clear vinyl. I also tape around the edges with painters tape so as not to run onto the quilt. I like your idea too.

I got one from my local glass cutting place. They'll cut it any size you want.
Tracy at The Sewing Channel has a hack for this. She uses clear vinyl, which I have seen before. But drawing by hand doesn’t work for all of us bc the motion of fmq is not really the same as hand drawing.
So her hack is to (first put down your vinyl over your block-and I outlined the vinyl with washi tape so I can see the edges) adhere a marker to your machine with tape. Then you can move the fabric around as usual when fmq; or move the machine around as usual when longarming.
I tried it and it works. However, I used crayola WASHABLE markers instead of dry erase markers bc the Crayolas don’t stink and are washable if you do slip onto your fabric. A moistened paper towel works well to remove the markings to start over. (Keep several handy.) I had to use the shortest Pipsqueak version of the marker to make it fit for my Amara, if I recall. I looked at this acrylic marker board you suggest and it also looks pretty cool! 😎 I was thinking that you cd just take it to the sink and rinse it off, if you used washable markers, bc it’s stiff, unlike the vinyl.
Do the markers that come with it stink? Are they washable or water soluble?

I primarily use mine to get an idea how the pattern I am thinking of doing will look and to figure out my path to keep tying off to a minimum.
I add tape around the edge so I don’t draw onto the quilt sandwich itself! Also I can see the edge of the acrylic..

What is the music you used on this video? Love it. You are the best! Your flow of design has always impressed me. How far ahead of your “quilting/drawing” is your creative process? I asked you once a long time ago and your answer was it just comes to mind as I move across the quilt. My challenge when doing this is keeping the scale of the quilting the same across and up and down the quilt. This being on an overall quilting work verses block quilting. When doing block designs I will put the design to paper and then hang it above the machine just for a reference. Thank you for the inspiration you provide.

I drew this design in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep, lol. I'm sure there's endless possibilities for this square💗 So many factors.... is it for a customer? What are there preferences? How dense do you want the quilting? Is there a theme in the fabric that inspires the design? So many things that can go into deciding.
