  • In this AmpMechanic video, I decide to take a break from repairing amps in order to get my Heathkit T4 Signal Tracer working. This is will help me fix amps, radios, and other stuff a lot faster which means I will also be able to publish videos more quickly. In this video, I replace some capacitors and resistors and follow a recipe from Terry at D-Lab to fabricate a multisection electrolytic capacitor.

You did an outstanding job on this T4. I'm doing an IT-12 and just watched and got some great tips from your very informative video.

The noise function puts like 100 volts dc on the probe. You connect the probe to components and if they are noisy (ie. a fractured resistor) you will hear the noise. Can be used in circuit on tube equipment but not on solid state. Look into the dos and don'ts before you use it.

The Eico 147A came with a 1.5 watt 8 ohm 4" speaker. I changed it out to a 30 watt 8 ohm 4" Eminence. It makes some noise. Maybe 2 or 3 watts? Sounds like a mini Champ. Big thumbs up on the video and I hope to see this gem in action on your future videos!

Man I always wanted on of those old HK signal tracers. Lucky man! Good eye for the old gear. This old stuff works fantastic. Where do you sell your stuff? I am a new suscriber. Keep up the great videos.

Thank you for a great video.... I have question: I am replacing the Cap 50uF 150v. but I can only find 50uF 450v and the other one 20uF 350v do you think it will be fine with high voltage?

Yes. In fact, I would go with the more common "standard" value, 47 mfd. In fact, I would select a 47 mfd/200 volt unit. And the other one, a 22 mfd/450 volt unit.

I have an Eico 147A Signal Tracer I've been playing guitar through for a while now but I still haven't figured out all the other mysterious uses for it yet. Vague instructions... But wouldn't it be cool to build a guitar amp that had all the signal tracer's capabilities built in?

Interesting idea. Although I can't imagine a practical use for such a Frankenstein. Do you know of one or is just because you can.

@@AmpMechanic Well David, I'm glad you asked. Imagine you're happily jamming with the fellas and the bass player's amp suddenly goes kaput. Not a problem because your super duper custom amp has a BNC jack and a probe, and a magic eye, along with your troubleshooting super powers you will have his amp repaired in minutes and be back to jamming in no time... Ah, the humanity... I've already had my local Fab shop make a duplicate case and face plate for the Eico 147. Now I just have to see a few of your future videos to see how to make it work. BTW, those "speaker test" jack lugs on your Signal Tracer: I ran those to a 12 inch Rolla Alnico speaker and it really filled in the low tones. I even got a complaint from the neiboors. It's amazing what 3 watts and some tubes can do. ;)
