  • my in depth focus on the Bujinkan 六尺棒術 Rokushakubō Jutsu kata 五法 Goho. Watch all my videos at: www.rojodojo.com/
Goho means "five ways," and it is easy to see four of the steps contained in the kata, but the fifth is hidden. The surprising fact is that it can be hidden at different spots in the kata.
What many don't see in this kata, is the way that you use the bo to manipulate space. It opens up the attacker and exposes suki.
As with any multi-step kata, each step should be done with intent. Many people just focus on the steps and never learn what's behind the kata. If you understand and explore the intent behind each strike or block, each shift in footwork, or every moment in the flow of the kata, then you may know the point of the kata itself.
Each strike with the bo has a potentiality. It may strike where the densho says or not. This is key to understanding any kata. If you blindly follow each step, you suck the life out of the form and you are training a dead art.
To have life, each strike has the possibility to strike any suki that presents itself. Train this way and the kata will come alive. It will make sense. You will find yourself understanding why the kata was passed down to us with these particular steps.
Then the bo comes alive and you feel like it is fighting on your behalf.

Very good video Micheal thank you. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with Soke. Those little bits of knowledge gave me a lot more things to explore while training bojutsu (and obviously other weapons as well).

Thank you! I'm so glad my videos help you with your training. I remember when I started in the '80s it was very difficult to find any details from Hatsumi Sensei at all. I try to make videos that I would have wanted back in those days... (:o)

Thank you for the video. I like it but last minutes are difficult to see because of the angle of the camera.

Sorry, that was one of the very first videos I made. So the angles may not be so helpful.

bujinkan kukishinden ryu, not kukishin ryu. other lines kukishin ryu there is a very specific role of the uke blocking, & it is not complicit

I study the way my teachers teach me in Japan. As far as the name of the school, you may want to learn the meaning of those kanji. I don't think the distinction is what you think it is.
