As a college student, my favorite thing to do is study and generally learn material alone, then go and try to help my friends and people in the class. Teaching people forces you to make sure you know and can explain all the concepts fully, and if you do a good enough job, your classmates love you.

But sometimes you can really benefit by having someone you trust to bounce ideas off, to get advice from - and get a confidence boost by giving advice TO that person. Also though I’m not competitive normally, having someone next to me working on the same stuff gives me a wee boost to race through before them. Or at least to keep up with them too. Friendly competition.

Studying alone is good if you understand what you are studying and motivated enough to fill the gaps with the struggle of learning or using other resources; however, if you don’t understand much of what is going on, the study groups are better since they allow questions and feedback about what you think you know so that clarification can be made about technique or concepts. Further, groups allows one person to take on the role of teacher and helps that person to deepen their understanding of the material as they help someone whom have a more shallow understanding. That being said, long time learners that are not in college learn how to learn by themselves with can be more typical for graduate school. Persistence and patience are necessary to reach understanding. Good luck to those still learning.

When you encounter a concept you don't understand just read a book about it. It appears as if you are studying in a random pattern but over time it works. If your goal is to study a specific subject as soon as possible, like college students, its not the best method. But for people who just want to learn it works extremely well over long periods of time, the knowledge you gain will be far more thorough, if you go into detail with every related topic.

@@AnonYmous-spyonmepls I did more study groups in undergrad since I enjoyed the social aspect and I could help those that had trouble with the material by teaching them what I understood from the material. It kinda part and partial to bloom taxonomy and how we learn in the cognitive domain. Once grad school came around it was about studying by myself since I had a family and a part time job. I couldn’t live at the university and was not teaching. My library textbooks that I have bought for reference plus what I found digitally helped provide a resource of examples and different perspective on the same subject matter to work through the material. Many times whether we work alone or with groups comes to the circumstances of life and the resources available. Take care.

Great advice. I tell my own students: the best way to learn is to teach! I tell them, your goal should be not to pass the course- but to master the material. And the goal should be to be able to teach it! That starts with explaining something to someone.
But, I agree that what comes first is delving into it on your own. Then, solidifying that immensely by explaining to another. Good texts, a good prof, are essential.
When I myself prepare a class, I always have to go beyond where I was last time in my understanding, have to dig deeper. That makes me feel alive- and smarter. And more creative. And new questions always come up, as I see I didn't really understand it before.
I love Halmos' books. Lin Alg is good, I have used some parts of it to prepare from. My own fave to teach from is Sheldon Axler's book, Lin Alg Done Right, though I prefer the first edition. I have taught from it and his proofs are just wonderful. It is clearly a labor of love.
(But, I introduce determinants and the vector product earlier and in a more traditional way.)
I was an undergrad at Berkeley when Axler was a grad student, and he was very helpful to me at some points. Halmos and Erdos I met each once. Erdos I had a great conversation with. He comes up to you at a party and says, "So, what are you working on?" And wants to know in detail. Then, he gives suggestions! If you are lucky, he may solve your problem and it could turn into a paper, where you write up his ideas along with yours!
He liked what my question was, had some suggestions and If I had been more on the ball, I could have made that happen!
Halmos was von Neumann's assistant at Princeton. I love his Set Theory book, also his Measure Theory, (though that one is "old-fashioned", still it is a great book). Supposedly, it was partly based on von Neumann's course and notes.
In person, I found him perhaps a bit arrogant and not so approachable. Erdos by contrast was extremely warm. People loved him and you can see why. Cheers and best of luck with everything!

I was a lot like batman in my undergrad: I worked alone.
I would answer questions in class if no one else would/could, but I wouldn't unless everyone else was quiet sufficiently long. I tended to stick to myself and possessed an air of mystery since certain teachers let it be known I was getting 100% on exams that everyone else was failing.
I didn't look like a math nerd since I skateboard and dress as such, but I was VERY antisocial. I didn't need other people to learn for the most part, and ended up getting outstanding senior award in physics. I regret it though... I have very few friends from undergrad now, and feel like I didn't live those years to the fullest. I avoided people due to life circumstances, and some autism, but it's not all about learning. Work with others to review and connect. I got a 4.0 dual majoring in math and physics but I did it wrong. Don't be like me and avoid people!

I’m on the spectrum too and while I did make friends with some students, I was always kind of scared to talk to professors. Especially if I didn’t have a question about something. It’s kind of tricky because their not exactly your friend, it’s a different relationship. You can’t ask to hangout with them, you don’t want to waste their time but your also supposed to be friendly with them so they can get to know you. The only way I really knew how to give them a good impression was to ask questions whenever I got stuck. Fortunately there were some classes I needed to go to office hours frequently. But I feel like my third letter of recommendation for grad schools is probably going to be pretty weak. If I get a professor to write me one. Thank god for my research experiences. If I get accepted anywhere that will be the thing that carries me.

I have loved chemistry since high school when I had a fantastic teacher and decided to become a chemist. For most of my college chemistry I studied alone except in Physical Chemistry which was the senior year, and I did not enjoy it because the professor was not good and I wanted to be an organic chemist. I remember I flunked the first semester and had to retake it the second semester along with the second semester of P. Chem. Fortunately, I passed both classes. The same bad professor taught the second P, Chem class. He gave us the option of writing a paper instead of taking the final, so I did that. A friend turned in my paper for me, then the professor came looking for me in the research lab that I worked in as an undergraduate. He told my lab mate that he did not get my paper, so I went to his office. This professor was in his eighties. I saw my paper behind him on the shelf and pointed it out to him. He was quite embarrassed and asked me what grade I deserved on the paper. Naturally, I said an A. I really did not find out what he gave me, but I passed the course and graduated!

Good advices. Sometimes it is overwhelming the amount of subjects you are interested in and want to study and practice. It can be so overwhelming that you "freeze" and don't do anything. The same with chores and "home improvements" projects. There are so many that you get lost and demotivated. BUT, this advice is a good steategy, DO at least 1 problem or read just 1 page a day or stady at least 1 hour a day. Or do 1 chore. Ather good advice is JUST GET STARTED. Most of the time (at least for me) is getting started, going over that threshold is difficult. After that the next hard one is to sustain at keep doing it. Good luck everyone.

I try not to think about how many months (or years) it will take me to get through an entire textbook so I can move on to the next subject. That’s easier to do after you graduate but I think it’s usually true there’s a lot less urgency to self study a topic in a certain time frame than you think there is. Sure I may want to go through like five textbooks in a year but I’m just going to be realistic and see what happens.

I’m a huge proponent of studying alone! The music needs clarified. It’s either classical, lofi, or ‘library studying/testing ambience”, the music is not supposed to have anything lyrical or distracting whatsoever, it’s there to drown out the noise all around you. The trick of the game is to do anything within your power to stay in the seat and keep focused on the studying.
Solving For finite element matrices and either using kramer’s rule, rref, or even the hard way of solving one equation at a time it is very necessary (even tedious).

As an undergrad I was ahead of everyone in the math sequence and took courses solo by arrangement with my advisor. In grad school I was a philosophy student but took a lot of math credits (I've worked in history and philosophy of mathematics). In hindsight, I wonder if I could have gotten more from my education with more connection with other math students. Alas, as you say there's a benefit of working with others.

Many times, studying in groups, with some exceptions, is the blind leading the blind. Yes, it's true some questions might be answered, but with a degree of uncertainty, but overall, I left with a sense of not really having learned anything or achieved much, though it was a great opportunity for LIMITED social engagement. In the end it is you alone vs. the test screen or exam paper. Studying alone also gives a chance to stop and digest the material without feeling rushed. But it can be dangerous if you're not disciplined enough not to wander off into irrelevant material and waste time.

What would you say about someone like me ? You see, college always moved to fast for me. I could almost never keep up. But at my own pace I could understand absolutely anything. I've learned some chemistry, electronics, computer programming, economics, math( through Calculus), auto mechanics, laptop repair. Not an expert in any of these, but functional. I feel like I would have never made it in college. So what should I do with myself. I could never stick to one subject because my interests are so broad.

I never listen to music, weird that he said that music is the devil..!
It reminds me of something in islam (my religion)
Reminds me of Abu bakr the khalifa and the friend of our prophet Muhammad, when he saw two women singing and use somekind of flute, he said it's the flute of devil..!
    That's really interesting!

From Wikipedia: "After his mother's death in 1971 Paul Erdős started taking antidepressants and amphetamines, despite the concern of his friends, one of whom (Ron Graham) bet him $500 that he could not stop taking them for a month. Erdős won the bet, but complained that it impacted his performance: "You've showed me I'm not an addict. But I didn't get any work done. I'd get up in the morning and stare at a blank piece of paper. I'd have no ideas, just like an ordinary person. You've set mathematics back a month." After he won the bet, he promptly resumed his use of Ritalin and Benzedrine."

    • @jacobharris5894
      @jacobharris5894 5 місяців тому

Learn where the formulas come from before you try to memorize them. Understand each step of the derivation or better yet be able to do it yourself if you need to on tests. A good understanding of the formulas and using them in lots of problems will naturally cause you to memorize quite a bit.
If you really need to use route memorization try Anki or regular flash cards. If you use Anki you might have to learn some latex so you can type math equations but it’s not too bad. It has an easy learning curve and you can learn the basics you’ll need in a few hours at most. Anything you need after that you can just google easily enough most of the time.
