The beeper was probably done to the newer cars to avoid noise complaints from NIMBY types that don't care for it despite the fact that the line predated their houses. Foolishness.
I made two videos of the Skokie Swift, ua-cam.com/video/taTUzDg-9yI/v-deo.html, and ua-cam.com/video/ktl-xSfPh34/v-deo.html. That was 10 years later, just before the wire came down. I especially liked the 1-50s and the sound. Thanks for posting.
@@dlcluley I just waited for a train with the rear cab open, cleaned the window the best I could, and rested the camera on the ledge. Southbound in the morning, northbound in the afternoon.
I've never been on the Skokie line but I know it was well known for using catenary. It appears that there was a lot less than people make it sound like. It's good they got rid of it all.
Bushrod Rust Johnson Yes, the catenary only existed from the west end of Skokie Shop trackage to Dempster. Replacing it with third rail simplified things.
Rode these when my family moved to Skokie in 92. Then later in 93, the Next gen 3200's came in. Brings back memories !!
This is the last operating remnant of the Chicago North Shore And Milwaukee Railroad.
Another name for the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad is North Shore Line
I remember riding this in the 90's. I had friends in Skokie.
Formerly the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad ,their Skokie Valley Route.
Beautiful...the Swift as I prefer to remember it.
So do I when when running time was between 5 1/2 and 6 minutes, This motorman would have done it with cars 1 to 4.
I've been to the yellow line in Skokie because I was going to get something to eat or go to the mall.
I miss those cars.
me too, I'm a Model Railroder and I have a beautiful Model of those two cta cars
The horn is much bettee than the current cars...
Victoria Cyunczyk yeah, the horns on the 5000 series sound very bad
Not a horn on the new cars. It's some weird beeper. I agree, it's trash.
*beep*

Yeah all 3rd rail.
In late 2004, the CTA eliminated the catenary and replaced that section with 3rd rail. It’s all 3rd rail now.
Catenary is gone, but some of the later cars still have the roof boards to support the old pans.
