I appreciate this convo. In Canada, we have struggled with celebrating our Canada day without acknowledging the atrocities to the indigenous communities. This year, my city allowed the indigenous communities to guide planning for Canada day based on respecting and honouring indigenous culture and history and it felt more authentic, and as Bob said, more patriotic to acknowledge more of the problematic nature of the country. It's not everything, but is a step in the right direction at least.
Chanting the pledge of allegiance every morning at school felt very cultish and unnecessary to me. Also, (hot take) why should we have to thank military for their service when they chose to enter and serve. No one was drafted against their will?
Bob gagged people were at school by 6am LOL. For high school, I had to wake up at 4:45pm-5am, catch the bus by 5:30am. School doors open at 6:20am, 1st period started at 7am and our last period, 5th, ended at the start of dismissal at 2:30pm. I stayed after school everyday for band and didn’t get home by 6:30pm.

I’m in Chicago (born in 1991) . We had to sing the National Anthem & The Negro anthem everyday from prek-8th grade . We didn’t have to do the anthem in highschool
From MO and in elementary school we had to say the pledge every morning. That stopped in middle school. We had to take the MAP test( the Missouri standardized test) till 8th grade
I grew up south of Pittsburgh and we sang My Country blah blah.. and then the pledge and then a moment of silence... in elementary school. Then middle and high school it was just the pledge and a moment of silence... Just like Bob lol.
I was born and raised in NYC. I went to a local public school in Lower Manhattan for K-6th grade, and we recited the "Pledge of Allegiance", and sang the first verse of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" every day.
I went to elementary school in Washington Heights. We did the pledge of allegiance every morning and during assemblies we would sing America and then do the pledge of allegiance. It was canceled by the time I got to Middle School.

I had a similar moment like Bob. When I was a kid going to day camp, my father would fry up some luncheon meat to make luncheon meat and mustard sandwiches...every single day! My sister have had enough and demanded he stop (meanwhile I'm behind her cheering her on).
From RI, we did pledge and my country in Elementary school. I don't remember my 1 year at public middle, but then I went to a Catholic school and we had prayer, no pledge.
I used to take the ITBS tests when I was in Catholic school. I also went to Catholic school in NYC in the early 2000s. So I think the ITBS tests are still a thing, at least in Catholic schools. In public NYC schools we took Regents and standardized tests for ELA, Math, Science etc.

I always felt having children pledge allegiance, when they don't even know what allegiance means (or the full background) was non consensual.
