Shad- Oh my god, look at that the prisons are so detailed...it actually makes you wait so many days and the floor is so detailed....oh they were so detailed in building this!!! Guard- What the....Why is he so happy about the cells?
Found a comment from a guy playing this who couldn't get into the Abbott's room in Sasau. Couldn't get in to complete a quest so, the guy drives from where he lives in Prague to Sasau, gets a tour of the monastery and asks about the Abbott's room. Gets told about passage from ramparts to the room which was destroyed in the 16th century, drives home, finds the passage and completes the mission. Good work Warhorse
- My lord, there's a man walking around the caste and commenting on its defensive capabilities, shall we put him in a cell? - Don't bother, he's going to get stuck in a bush and die from starvation anyway
Why not employ him? The defences are going to need refurbishment sooner or later. I can imagine Shad/Henry wandering around the low walls with a team of architects pointing up and yelling "MACHICULATIOOOOOOOOONS!" (and bollocks to how you're meant to spell that word).
what i also really like about this game is that the city is surrounded by farms, fields, a mill and all that is needed to feed the people inside the city. its a thing thats often forgotten in other games or movies
You need a food supply to feed your people, and it would be more than hunting and gathering in the woods or plains. They NEED farm lands bring in harvests of fruits, vegetables, and livestock for the kingdom to survive.
This game even does things like putting tanners downwind due to the smells they produce. And on top of all the historical authenticities, it is one of the best RPGs in decades. Hope the sequel gets made and uses Unreal Engine 5 and VR.
Yeah, like for example in the LotR movies, Minas Tirith and Edoras look so out of place because they are just in the middle of nothing. The first things that come to mind are that why are the cities even there, and how are they supported. The only crop fields in the whole Middle Earth seem to be in Shire. IMO being in a fantasy world doesn't give them a pass, it kinda ruins the immersion.
I’m really late to the party, but Hans Capon mentions being all about that French nobility style, so him decorating his own room with the fleur de lis is understandable
During that time period Hungary was ruled by the Anjou relatives of house Árpád (the last Árpádian king died w/o heir, so his nephew, Charles Martel of Anjou was claiming the throne, but only his son, Charles I. of Hungary managed to actually get it) The Hungarian Anjou kings were on really friendly terms with the house of Luxembourg, who ruled Bohemia (Louis the Great had no children, so he made Sigismund of Luxembourg his heir) I think the presence of the Fleur de lis comes from this friendly connections.
Fun fact. The portraits painted on the walls of the various churches in the game are dedicated to the people who backed the kickstarter, you can see their names if you take a closer look.
I personally wouldnt mind a small series of Shad walking through every castle in the game and commenting on them like this, was a very enjoyable video.
Not sure Wenceslas IV would bother to do that considering he is probably too busy partying Unless you mean Sigismund of Hungary? At which point I can understand
The smaller castle in Rattay is kind of a "guests castle" it is the less defensible of the two yes, but look at it this way: Whoever breaches the lower wall (aka the least defended) will have to siege both castles SIMULTANEOUSLY as soon as you get into the city you are already fighting two garrisons on two fronts. ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL
well technically speaking this game still have a bunch of bugs, so the next game will be 2 or 3 years from now until the team ironed out all the bugs. Would you like to use our company’s new cryo tech?
Yeah... here in central Europe... there are castles for everyone... look at "Oravský hrad" in Slovakia... location is amazing, castle has looooong history www.google.cz/search?q=oravsk%C3%BD+hrad&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwid2sSJn_nZAhXKO5oKHdiOA3YQ_AUICigB&biw=1680&bih=984
I live in Southern Germany (Swabia) and we have a good amount of castles around but sadly most of them are "Märchenschlösser" (fairy tail castles). I live very close to Castle Lichtenstein and Castle Hohenzollern.
Well, talking about how bad Lower Rattay defensive is, according to what I gather, Lower Rattay was the Old Rattay, and probably Rattay wasn't such an important city back in the day that Lord Hans Capon's ancestors didn't bother constructing a good defensive structure there. In the game they just finnished the Upper Rattay castle, which is shown as more well built and overall better than the Lower Castle. Lower Castle probably wasn't designed to be a proper fortification but only as a fortified residence, while Upper Castle is designed to held off Sieges from outside or within the City Wall.
The Lower Castle was probably built before the city was, and obviously needed an entrance. When the rest of the city was built they probably didn't want everyone coming through the castle to get to the city so they added another entrance.
Bit late, but I'm replaying the game so a renewed interest. Pirknstein, the lower castle, is actually the later addition. There's art depicting that the main wall should actually continue across to make the area with refegees a contained courtyard with another gatehouse between it and Rattay proper. So defending that bit would be less important as there was nothing in it and it was further surrounded with a castle on oneside and the main city walls on the other.
Shad! I'm so happy you pointed out the drawbridge counterweight! BUT THE ACCURACY GOES FURTHER! Let me explain: The counterweight consisted of several ball weights chained together, so that when the drawbridge is open, all the balls are lifted of the ground and are counter weighting the bridge. But when it's closed, the balls are on the ground and thus not pulling on the chain. But neither is the bridge on the other side because it is raised! As the bridge opens, the force it applies to the rope increases, but at the same time due to this smart design, the number of effective counterweight balls on the other side also increases - keeping the bridge perfectly balanced! I'm so chuffed though, because I commented on your original Honourguard video that most drawbridges on your castle aren't balanced. Then I came up with a solution for how your bridges might be counter weighted using weights on the other end of the chain EXACTLY AS IS SHOWN HERE! Just goes to show that using engineering principles to find the simplest solution to historical problems is a pretty good way of finding what the historical people most likely did. Keep up the great work educating, inspiring and provoking thought in all your viewers Shad. Thank you so much!

Even in the starting city (or village...not sure about his definition) the main character's house was situated inside another wall, right under the lord's castle since his father was a blacksmith.

Just wanted to fire back at you Shad regarding one thing in this video, though I'm not in complete disagreement with you, I wanted to point one thing out and see if what I'm proposing makes sense. At around 13:30 mins you start to identify the flaws of the city's main road entrance on the south side. I would argue that it's intentionally designed that way because I hypothesize that the city's planners preferred any attacking enemies to assault the side of the city FURTHEST from the main castle. This way the enemy (if successful in breaching this southern main gatehouse) would immediately have to deal with the smaller Pirkstein castle on their right. This would inevitably stall the enemy's advance through the city proper and buy any occupants time to flee to the main castle at the North end of town. It would also have the benefit of forcing the Invaders to have to fight house to house through the entire length of the city on their way up to the main large castle. Since time is one of the most valuable assets any army has in the medieval period, especially for the defenders, intentionally baiting potential Invaders towards a particular entry point is itself a defensive tactic. In other words, the designers of the city figured if the enemy is going to breach the walls somewhere it might as well be here. So let's design the defenses in such a way to buy our citizens the most amount of time to get to safety within the main castle's bailey and buy any potential reinforcements time to get into battle from elsewhere in the kingdom. Forgive me if this doesn't make sense I'm not much of a writer and would be happy to engage with you on this point in greater detail via email or something where I can utilize visual aids to illustrate my points. Anyway, I love your work, and I envy your passion for all things medieval. Keep up the good work Shad!
In another video shad explains why the Motte and Bailey strategy fell out of favor for a more traditional castle with concentric rings. And, its the same strategy concept that you are proposing. The problem is that the intruders can use the conquered area to stage an attack on the main keep or, in this case, the other half of the castle as a whole. Especially if allied support arrived to help the defenders and come to find the attackers are now dug in and they are left out in the open to attack them without bringing the tools they need to take on a castle defense. The attackers are in a better position to group up and launch an assault against the rest of the castle. Not to mention it would be easier to starve out the inhabitants this way. Because, the defending inhabitants are having to share supplies and beds, etc. They would probably go through their rations twice as fast and be packed together densely.
@@7kyro I understand where you're coming from, but the situation you're hypothesizing doesn't seem to make sense to me. Let's picture Rattay from an overhead view or better yet, find a photo of the in-game recreation. The one shad uses in this video for example is perfect. Ok, Let's say I'm a military commander and I need to siege Rattay. Bear in mind I can't starve out the city for XYZ reason. I NEED to assault this city without delay or my lord is gonna cut my nuts off. I'm essentially going to test the capabilities of this city's defenses from a full fledged assault. Ok so starving them out is off the table... Where do I impregnate this b****? The north end with the two entrances is already off the table considering It's got a huge moat, the bridges leading in to the city will have probably been burned or disassembled pre-siege requiring me to have to fill in the moat myself(which will take time and attrition). It's the side of the city with the much more formidable Castle that can hold more men, food, supplies, etc. It's got a fantastic line of sight and fire for archers. It would basically be a suicide assault and id lose the battle. Alrighty, that side is a no-go. Now, let's look at the south side entrance. Interesting......, It's got a thinner wall, no proper gatehouse, half the wall next to the gate isn't even manned..... basically all the points Shad makes, which were all fair. Despite the fact, the road up to the gate is a gauntlet of arrows from the wall that lines the left side of it, I can still get my men into the city walls relatively easily this way when compared to the north end. Unfortunately, now I'm in a sticky situation because, I've got castle Pirkstein on my right side flanking me with missiles and I have no cover. The tower it's got is also observing my troop movements, harassing my line of supply, killing my men and (most importantly) dividing my attention between its defenders and the defenders of the city itself. With pirkstein all closed and gated up upon my breach of the gate I'm limited to 3 options. #1 waste time sieging pirkstein (good outcome for defenders) #2 Attack the city and ignore pirkstein completely. (Also good for the defenders by allowing them to harass the flanks and delay the assault) #3 split my forces between attacking the city and pirkstein. (Also good for defenders, because each defensive stronghold i.e the upper and lower castles would would be dealing with less forces). Essentially the point I'm trying to make is that Rattay is actually designed exceptionally well despite the flaws of the south gate. In fact, the flaws hide potential strengths as well. What seems like a design flaw is actually a well set trap, in my opinion. One last point though, something that Shad missed that is important. If you take a good look at the south entrance, the walls of the city form a funnel shape corridor that divides the city proper and the space that all the Skalitz folk have turned into a makeshift camp. This space is a killing zone. If the defenders build a makeshift wall across the bottleneck, they can keep the breach contained within that space. Further delaying my assault. See what I'm saying man? Rattay would be a pain in the butt to assault is my point. As far as your point about the invaders being able to dig in and defend themselves from reinforcements. As far as I'm concerned, I say let them dig in. They can't get resupplied from the outside world anymore due to the reinforcements. They themselves are now under siege. Unless they're julius Caesar they won't survive between 2 armies.
@@TheGodlessGamer There’s no way I’m gonna be able to address every single point but I’ll do the best I can (on mobile) from memory because you’re kind of blending things together a little bit from a Birdseye view which I don’t have myself nor do I own this game: It would stand to reason that IF the main goal of this fortification’s set up was to intentionally be a trap for the attackers and for them to fall victim then why don’t we see traps and pitfalls and bottlenecks and a clear disadvantage in the high ground once they are inside? Shad mentioned that the dividing wall doesn’t even have proper defenses I don’t even remember if it had a door or portcullis in the middle. The middle wall separating the two parts of the fortification is so crucial to Your theory but it’s not anything I would write home about. You would think they would at least put a gate house in the middle or ramparts on it to capitalize on the idea of having the attackers in the position did they find themselves in once they break in. I do like the fact that you are entertaining this theory because it’s a concept that is unique but at the same time there would be a load of new unintended consequences that you would have to work out and let history take it’s course. And that’s not exactly the area I would want to experiment with if it meant the livelihood of a whole castle is at stake. Also, you really need to go and watch Shads video about the Motte and Bailey as it addresses all the issues you’re bringing up in that video when there’s a lot of evidence to suggest that people gave up this style of fortification in favor of a more concentric castle set up. I believe The Motte and bailey design wasn’t even the most ideal for them at the time but rather it was a simpler defense that was able to be made in the most common circumstances. For example, when you lacked a terrain advantage the Motte was a man made hill that placed the keep higher than the Bailey. But in this case we are talking about a castle in a video game that already had a MASSIVE terrain advantage already. And to Shads credit he sheds light on the fact that it could’ve been used even more to their advantage. And, To my knowledge, you are not disputing this. The phenomenon of the Motte and Bailey is a real historic phase of history that can be measured and observed. The mistakes that were learned in the process of history were written in blood. And I believe this is a classic example of this.
This game is going to go down in PC/console history as one of the most under-appreciated games of all time. It is an historical-immersion masterpiece. And when one considers that this game had like half the budget of a game like Skyrim, it is an incredible achievement! Plus Warhorse is heavily supporting the release with constant updates to fix glitches and other issues. If you love the medieval time period and want to be immersed and take part in it, there is no other game that comes close.
You must be joking. KC:D budget was roughly half of that of Skyrim, and still less than TW3. WarHorse at this moment is actually bigger than Bethesda Game Studios was when they developed Skyrim...
Unfortunately the outfits and armors are not as accurate as the buildings and architecture. There's still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to displaying historical accuracy, but Kingdom Come is a big step forward.
@DanRage47 I agree. It really is such a unique game completely devoid of modernistic infection, it just tries (and succeeds) to be as authentic and accurate as it can be. So refreshing. I might have to go back and play it again after watching this video.
It's not a historical-immersion anything. The architecture is great, but there's a hell of a lot wrong with the game in general, one of the big parts being how there's Germans, Englishmen and Vikings all living in the same place at the same time. There's also bugs upon bugs upon bugs, and stupid mechanics like drinking a rare form of alcohol to save the game. Games like Skyrim have next to no budget compared to most popular games, but judging by the environment and quality of the textures, I would expect a multi-million budget for this game, so that is impressive.
Shads future castle Song "I like Thick Castles and I cannot Lie. You Stuarts Cannot lie, when you walk in the halls of a Machulation with a thick wall in your face you get Sprung....."😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
I love that Kingdom Come shows that games can be so more more realistic without looking bad. I mean the whole city/castles built on a hill to get terrain advantage for defence is looking amazing.
In Germany we have two different words for castles that differentiate the types. First we have the word "Burg" which means the castles that are made for defense. The second word is "Schloss" which meanse cstles that are made for looks and the demonstration of power like for example Neuschwahnstein.
Same in czech, "hrad" for defense (until 15th, 16th century) and "zámek" for aesthetics (let's say 17-19th century), "pevnost" was the word for defensive building in later periods
@@veronikaczr1105 I would assume "hrad" means "something walled off", which doesn't necessarily have to be a castle. It's a common ancient Slavic (or even Indo-European, since the English word "garden" came from the same origin) root; in Russian the word "grad" transformed into the modern word "gorod" (=city) many centuries ago. Same with the Germanic languages as it seems, because "burger"/"burgher" since the Middle-Ages means "city dweller" or "citizen" and not "castle inhabitant".
Burcht(burrow in English) and Slot(lock in English) in Dutch. 1:1 the same with the Germans. Although "het Muiderslot" is called a water slot (was a defensive castle) surrounded by a mote filled with water.
Yea I think it helps that if you go out in Czech republic, you can wander in any random direction and you'll trip over some castle or fort sooner rather than later.
In my mind, there are three reasons for that - 1) the geographical position of Bohemia made it a place often traversed by traders and merchants, and you wanna protect your traders and merchants; 2) this period is shortly after basically the golden times for Bohemia, when it had been the seat of the emperor and gained many lands through him, so the coffers were full and you know castles are expensive; 3) thanks to the fact Germany in WWII took Czech Republic basically without any force, there were nowhere near as many bombings and military action happening here, so many of the structures are well preserved to this day, unlike a large part of Europe.
“It’s colled a BAStian okay? A BAStion!” “THIS is NOT GOOD!” “MACHICOLATIOOOOOONS!!!!” “The DETAIL!!! AHAUGH! PUUURFECT!” He’s like the Castle Crocodile Hunter... Castle-dile Hunter
I can attest to the defensibility of that steep hill. The amount of times I’ve fallen to my death whilst picking herbs is almost depressing, but also motivational to the strength of the castle.
When I first went through Rattay I legit nerded out, because of everything this channel has taught me. I also couldn't help but think: Holy crusades, SHAD'S GONNA LOVE THIS Little detail I loved, there are actually 2 blacksmiths in Rattay, one in the lower ring of the city and one in the upper ring, which seems to be to keep the soldiers supplied if the lower city falls. Plus you have the armor and weaponsmith, meaning they could both take refuge in the upper city, 3 gear maintenance specialists for the soldiers, they also sell "maintenance kits, meaning they can do it without a forge. PLUS the huntsman who is also a bowyer/fletcher
Denison Fagundes bowyers were responsible for the making of the “arch” of the bow, and stringfellows took on the job of fabricating a suitable string. The stringfellow occupation was a legitimate one for a time, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many carrying around the name. Arrows, themselves, had their own tight knit team of craftsmen. Either part of the arrow had its own worker on it. The one tending to the arrowheads was the arrowsmith, the man making the flights and shaft was the fletcher.
Yea, i am STILL completely blown away with the amount of detail that the art team took the time to implement. On areas of a game like this where you would normally see an abundance of fast pattern and texture placement, KC:D took the time to lay it in patiently. THIS is where other games should be in a graphic sense!
I live in bavaria germany and we have castles here that look exactly like that, even the landscape is so accurate that it looks like I went out of my town for a hike
@@useruseruser674 culturally i feel it's mostly German with a Slavic language. But I know that may only be my perception as I don't see differences between them and Germany except for the language.
I've loved medieval era history and fantasy for as long as I can remember, but this game has really reinvigorated my interest, and since then I've discovered people like you, Skallagrim, and Metatron. I thank you personally for what you bring to UA-cam. I've genuinely been enjoying all the content of yours, and I especially love the in depth analysis of castles in games. Thanks!
The small room on the right in the Lower Battlements of the Pirkstein Castle (The Smaller castle on thr right side as you enter by the big road connection to the Castle, is just an armory for the soldiers and the other rooms are houseings of the Garrison) the Room on the right asyou enter is Sir Hanush'es personal quarters. I will do a time stamp with what's behinde the doors later on. And yes I leveled lockpicking to lvl 17 xD
Seems like whomever was supposed to repair the door to top level had simply planked it off. And guard was put up to hide this embarassment while blacksmith and carpenter make a new one....
The place where he says the door should be, looks like there is a door. The guard just blocks it because the devs don't want you up there (just what I think)
Shad, I know it's been 2 years since you've posted this video, but given how much passion you felt when reviewing these two castles, do you think you could make another video showcasing a few of the other castles present in this game? It is just such a delight to hear you fangasm and detail all the things about these castles! Seriously, you make me FEEL inside that world!
33:40 Shad that's a root cellar it's pretty much the medieval fridge and they did sometimes store ice during the winter to keep it colder through the year.
That's probably part of the training as well. In a siege, the smell of dead bodies must be literally worse than shit, but you gotta keep the focus and shoot arrows at the enemies.
I'm imagining a group of kings listening very intently to Shad as he goes on about castle architecture. "I'm in the market for a siege engineer" "I have a question about murder holes." "Wait your turn! I'm still trying to get answers on crenelation heights."
7:33 That's still the case today. A "city" in Norway and a "city" in Germany or the UK are *very* different things. The minimum requirement for a "city" in Norway is actually just 5 000 people within the munincipality borders and a resolution of the munincipality council to declear the main "town" of the munincipality as a city. That has been the requirement since 1997. Prior to that we had a system with something equivalent to the charters you mentioned in this video. 19:18 We still do that in quite a bit of Norway. Mind you, most of us use electric heating as our main form of heating. But I don't know about any Norwegian house that don't have at least two different types of heating, simply because if one fails you *need* another one to survive... And in most rural places in Norway that secondary heating is firewood... And that firewood is also often used to supplement the electric heating when it's extra cold. -40 C or -50 C is no joke, and trying to heat that with just electricity is not the best of ideas... We don't design our houses to handle that amount of cold... 24:18 I don't know about Bohemia. But here in Norway they *where* that small, the beds belonging to pesants where actually often even smaller then that. You didn't sleep straight out either, your body being all flat was assossiated with death and when you're curled up you retain heat better too.
While to be a city in the UK doesn't mean anything in regards to population. St Asaph got city status and it's tiny! While Wrexham, one of the largest towns in North Wales was denied city status. Get very confused when US people ask what city I'm from. I say 'I'm from a village and then they get confused :P It took a kind young man from New jersey to explain it to me. I get it now, but yeah... Didn't realise how diferent it was in other countries. Excuse the typing, my hand is frozen.
No real complaint just thought i should clarify the temperature in Norway thing. You can find places where it gets that cold (northern Norway mostly), but MOST of Norway actually have a comparative mild climate. Coming from the western part of Norway we for example recently complained of how cold it is.........with only -5 C. In fact thanks to the gulf stream we have some of the mildest climate you can find this far north :)
Just goes to show: I did two PTs of this game thinking I had explored every nook and cranny but I never discovered that back door starting @ 26:16. I had even been in that stream area quite a few times looking around trying to find a place to sneak into the castle and never saw the entrance. Probably that is why there was no grate - thinking no-one will ever find it (HA!). There is a postern on the other side of the cliff that Shad doesn't show which is a little easier to find and easily traversed on horseback. There is no grate either, just a door and one guard. Easily the biggest security threat because it is very accessible from two directions.
A Pro Tip: You can use the map to better see the layout! (Also, I love how Shad just walks through the private areas ignoring all the warnings and at 27:50 even the guards trying to arrest him :D )
I'd honestly love to see a two hour long (or more!) video by you where you're just walking around in KCD pointing out all the historically accurate details like you did the firewood and the portcullis being made of wood.
I think what I'm looking forward to most is the planned video he's mentioned on what's required for a functional castle. I know the defenses but my own castle building has been hampered by lack of room knowledge.
I'd say that watching his tour of his own castle Honorguard would give you at least a pretty good idea as to rooms and the like for castles, I am personally very big into castles as well, but even I didn't know everything about the internal layout of a well designed castle (and Honorguard is essentially a box maze for anyone who doesn't live there, it's quite easy to have no idea where you're at if you have no idea of the internal layout, it's brilliant).
Lord of the Void Aye, a pretty good idea of it, but personally I couldn't pick out which parts are vital and which are luxuries afforded by such a large keep.
I'd say at least a bedroom, some servants quarters including the kitchen, a dining hall, a guest room, and maybe a small throne room, these I'd say are the minimum of a moderate or small keep. A large ballroom, lots of extra guest rooms, a entry room, anything like a family room/living room, a large treasury, and a guardroom, these are more so things found in larger keeps. Though I don't know everything about internal keep design, so whilst I hope this helped, I would also say that a video from Shad on the matter would be great.
It is imperative to have a separate entrance to the castle independent of the city entrance. The city is tactically and functionally different from an outer bailey. Too many people, too lax security. You don't want to rely on a route through that. If the city is compromised in any way - a fire, a blocked road, enemy infiltration or - worst case scenario - a mutiny, you are screwed. The city itself is too well-equipped and effective for a siege against its castle, compared to outside entrance.
32:17 [The crapper is right above the archery range and whoever is sitting there has their ass and privates exposed to the world from below] ...This is quite possibly asking for it by giving you the most tempting target in the world to loose at. You know some bored young men are going to be practicing archery and notice someone is on the toilet and... Well... The fact that know what will eventually happens means you know how tempting of a target it would be.
To be shot in the ass whilst on the crapper, dear lord that'd be a bad day, also if you're a new recruit and you manage to sit in just the right spot, you'd have a crappy day!
probably they wouldn't be just any lowly peasants as, they wouldn't have the access to the city at all... and, believe me the contest or training would be guarded. mybe a noble would be able to TRY t assassinate the king, but they would get caught after anyway. And as an archer i tell you, that is quite far up and not so easy to hit.
It actually happened to the czech (bohemian) Duke Jaromír in 1035. Cosmas (well known historian and chronica writer) wrote: „Kochan poslal svého kata a když onen slepec seděl na záchodě v hodině noční, vyprazdňoval břich, proklál ho ostrým oštěpem zezadu až do útrob břišních.“ Which means that executioner was sent in night to kill Jaromír, sending a spear from down below the crapper to arse of Jaromír all the way through his guts. Its all a cool story, as he was already castrated and made blind by his brother. Cruel history, huh.
@Komixan a French king, Henri III (known as Henryk by the Polish, since he had been previously king of Poland) died on the crapper stabbed by a monk in front of the court. The monk was then slain by all the people present and thrown trough the window x) Seems it's a quite common place to die :p
So Shad a little late but anyway I live in an old European city and I noticed that you mentioned that the bed (which was ornamented) was too small and would be bigger beeing so ornamented. I've actually seen beds just like that in my city's castle so just letting you know they did, in fact, exist like that =). Hope you found this information interesting and I enjoyed the video. Cheers!

Hey Shad, just one quick reminder about the castle - city -entrance- stuff. I do not think that having two different entrances next to each other must be a bad thing. It depends on who owns the city and who owns the castle, which usually once belonged to the same person. But imagine that you own the castle and now your citizens uproar (stuff like that was very common). In yuch a case you do not want to be trapped inside the city
Hey Shad, you just gained a sub thrue this vid of yours.(and from Bohemia/Czech rep. nonethelles) We Czechs in real life like the things simple even from our own history up till now. AND have the mentality of : ´´If its simple and it works DONT fix it.´´ attitude in life as well. About the firewood thing shad, to this day if you would come to the Czech or Slovakian rep.at houses we still have(if they have a fireplace or a boiler) stocks of wood around sheds, garages, car roofings, chicken coops etc. etc. :D
I know this video is 6 years old, and with KCD 2 coming out soon, decided to watch Shad talk about this game and I tell you, it’s a relief listening to Shad being so excited about a game that is so historically accurate! 😅
Regarding the entries, the first castle, what they call the "high castle" in the game, was built first, with it's gate. Then fortifications were built around the city, with one entry to each side. And lastly, as two lords leaved in the city they built a second castle much later on the other side of town. The second castle is better thought because it came last.
Masaryk's University (based in Brno) already has a course for this autumn semester planned, just about "the hardships representation of medieval period in games as demonstrated in KCD".
This! This is the video I was waiting for! As a history nerd myself, (even my account name is that of a medieval German knight/mercenary with an artificial arm) I really enjoyed listening to you nerd out over these castles. Keep up the great videos Shad! You are my favorite historical UA-camr!
I like your name! I think you already know enough about Götz von Berlichingen with the iron hand, i just wanted to point out, that his name is the nickname-version of the german form of Jeffrey/Geoffrey (german: Gottfried), which means the same as Salomon or Suleiman.. i find the connections between names very interesting. You could also easily call yourself Jeff Ironhand, which would make a nice RP name with a background, but nearly nobody would know about that connection :D

I have watched a few Shadiversity videos, and I only just started playing KCD, but the moment I saw a castle in game, I thought 'I hope Shad has done a video on these.' congratulations sir you have earned my subscribe!
I had a bit of a laugh at one conversation at the end of the game regarding the talmberg castle - a guy says it has no weaknesses. But (Spoiler!) 5 minutes later you're running up to the back wall with ladders and there's nothing to stop you.
23:10 I have found a few fleur-de-lis in the personal crests and heraldry of some bohemian families but it is clearly not common (at least one was attributed to members in the von Bredow and Seibmacher lines that I could find.) I found some heraldry frescos from a castle in Prague with the symbol that include some Bohemian crests. The easiest explanation for the game motief is probably the influence of diplomatic marriage and may hint to French nobility in the line. Your suspicion is correct. It does not appear to be a common motif for the region in this period.
The fleur-de-lis would likely have spread with influence of the Avignon Papacy. The region was clearly divided in its loyalties, especially during the Western Schism, and a hundred years of materialist French popes is bound to leave its mark on the noble houses of the world.
I assume it's a result of the kings of Bohemia (and Holy Roman emperors) of the time being of the House of Luxembourg. That would explain the French influence.
My family moved from france to bohemia somtime arround in the 16th century (and later to serbia and after that to bavaria) do to marriage and inheritance.
Right at 25:05 into the video, approximately, it looks like the guard might be blocking the entrance to the stair way. I do not necessarily know anything about castles at all, I just watch the videos because I simply enjoy listening to your commentaries. But I couldn't help to noticing that it is a possibility he is guarding that entrance. It could be a storage room of some sort. Since the kitchen is right below, it could be food supplies and such. If they are dried, keeping them higher will preserve them better. Thanks for your time in the making of these videos, I truly enjoy them; as do many other people in here who are just as eager to learn about our ancestors went about building these majestic buildings that still drop jaws to this very day. Very detailed, honest, and passionate review. Thank You!
Excellent video Sir Shad! Instructional AND very entertaining! This makes visiting castles in KCD soooo much more interesting and makes me appreciate the historical aspects of these structures. I am now walking around castles naming off the historically correct names of the different parts of it. You are like our personal tour guide in KCD! Thank you for making these videos and taking the time to go into so much detail. Well done! Insta-SUB!
I'm not so sure that 'weak' wall is weak at all. If anything, it might be left intentionally 'weak' to goad the enemy into attacking from that side. They'd still have to navigate uphill past a 300m wall probably loaded with archers who can fire at them from all angles. Those archers would have an absolute field day. Not to mention that even if they could enter the city there, they would do so from it's lowest point so they have to fight another uphill battle. (The area behind the gate is also pretty murderous.) I'm calling Adm. Ackbar.
I watched the entire walk thru of the game, the castle gets captured and the lord of the castle mentions that was the weakest part of the castle, but even attacking that method would be difficult, so they build a trebuchet instead. The hidden passage was part of the game to try to free two ransom persons. I think the gate was taken away probably to make sure it remained open for that scenario to take place.
Who else can just imagine shad becoming extremely rich and building a castle to defend from the neighbours and shouting METICHULAATIOOOONA at the builders
I recently started this game again after 5 years and man I love it so much. The detail is incredible. I didn’t know you covered this one but I guess I should have figured. Recently found you as well ha. Awesome video. Love the passion.
There is actually a secret door into the lower castle in Rattay. From the southern side of the castle, there's a homestead at the bottom of the cliff. Behind the homestead is a small well-hidden grotto (shhh!), with narrow stairs leading up the cliff face, to a guarded back door. I don't know if this door was there in the real castle, but considering the level of detail, I imagine it was. It would be quite a feat to march an army up that way though, and you couldn't certainly use siege towers or cavalry units.
There's a second "hidden" door on the northern face of the city, right about midway between both castles, but again it is essentially facing a cliffside so you couldn't really attack it with any significant force.
Ivr been waiting for this review, rattay is my favourite castles. For reasons, refer to video, but I still was amply waiting for a review like this, thanks daddy shad, and thanks to warhorse for years of hard work paying off!

what i also really like about this game is that the city is surrounded by farms, fields, a mill and all that is needed to feed the people inside the city.
its a thing thats often forgotten in other games or movies
You need a food supply to feed your people, and it would be more than hunting and gathering in the woods or plains. They NEED farm lands bring in harvests of fruits, vegetables, and livestock for the kingdom to survive.
@@Davidofthelost my point entirely, thanks
they even have people carrying water up to the city and carrying buckets of shit down to the river
You're not as late as me! 🙂

You can find books in the game that say that rattay was raided or mostly burned before they built the upper castle
The lower castle was the new one in history.
You absolutely HAVE to review the only castle, that we see being besieged in every detail!
We want Talmberg review!

Keep up the good work Shad!
true
Sounds logical to me.
@@TheGodlessGamer There’s no way I’m gonna be able to address every single point but I’ll do the best I can (on mobile) from memory because you’re kind of blending things together a little bit from a Birdseye view which I don’t have myself nor do I own this game:
It would stand to reason that IF the main goal of this fortification’s set up was to intentionally be a trap for the attackers and for them to fall victim then why don’t we see traps and pitfalls and bottlenecks and a clear disadvantage in the high ground once they are inside?
@@vgamedude12 Agreed. This vid makes me want to go back and roam the game.

Same in danish: "Borg" and "slot". 😊

It looks like they were building them everywhere given how many ended up in a 4km by 4km piece of land.
True, while on vacation there last summer we started wandering in the hills near Turnov and found three of them!
“It’s colled a BAStian okay? A BAStion!”
“THIS is NOT GOOD!”
“MACHICOLATIOOOOOONS!!!!”
“The DETAIL!!! AHAUGH! PUUURFECT!”
He’s like the Castle Crocodile Hunter...
Castle-dile Hunter
I can attest to the defensibility of that steep hill. The amount of times I’ve fallen to my death whilst picking herbs is almost depressing, but also motivational to the strength of the castle.
Listening to how excited you were throughout the video made me laugh. It's nice to see peoples effort appreciated so much.
When I first went through Rattay I legit nerded out, because of everything this channel has taught me.
I also couldn't help but think:
Holy crusades, SHAD'S GONNA LOVE THIS
Little detail I loved, there are actually 2 blacksmiths in Rattay, one in the lower ring of the city and one in the upper ring, which seems to be to keep the soldiers supplied if the lower city falls. Plus you have the armor and weaponsmith, meaning they could both take refuge in the upper city, 3 gear maintenance specialists for the soldiers, they also sell "maintenance kits, meaning they can do it without a forge.
PLUS the huntsman who is also a bowyer/fletcher
mikelms20 Of course the smiths would be the arrowsmiths, but who would be the stringfellow?
MerlinsJester Is stringfellow a real word, or do you mean string fellow? And I thought bowyers made their own strings.
19:35 I visited Malbork a few weeks ago and this is exactly the way the counterweights were built there (at least in one of the gatehouses)
I live in bavaria germany and we have castles here that look exactly like that, even the landscape is so accurate that it looks like I went out of my town for a hike
well yes, czechia is a slavic-germanic country
@@useruseruser674 culturally i feel it's mostly German with a Slavic language.
But I know that may only be my perception as I don't see differences between them and Germany except for the language.

I've loved medieval era history and fantasy for as long as I can remember, but this game has really reinvigorated my interest, and since then I've discovered people like you, Skallagrim, and Metatron. I thank you personally for what you bring to UA-cam. I've genuinely been enjoying all the content of yours, and I especially love the in depth analysis of castles in games. Thanks!
It's a true pleasure sir, thank you for letting me know ^_^
You need master picklocking Shad. We want to see the locked sections too. There may be stairs in them.
No. Just other rooms. I think storage room, quarters for soldiers and armory (not sure).
Türkay Thanks for the details.
That bed size is actually accurate. Just so you know. I really enjoyed your video! Great as always
33:40 Shad that's a root cellar it's pretty much the medieval fridge and they did sometimes store ice during the winter to keep it colder through the year.
Like the Victorian ice chests. They could only be opened once a day or the ice would melt and flood the room.

Shad: which means there is a distinct lack of...
Me: Turns up volume
Shad: MACHICOLATIONS
Me: Perfect.
Glorious!
Did shad just have a castlegasm?
32:14 You're just down there practicing your archery when suddenly there's something rolling down the castle wall nearby. D:
That's probably part of the training as well. In a siege, the smell of dead bodies must be literally worse than shit, but you gotta keep the focus and shoot arrows at the enemies.
I'm imagining a group of kings listening very intently to Shad as he goes on about castle architecture.
"I'm in the market for a siege engineer"
"I have a question about murder holes."
"Wait your turn! I'm still trying to get answers on crenelation heights."
7:33
That's still the case today.
19:18
We still do that in quite a bit of Norway.
24:18
I don't know about Bohemia.

Czech Republic here, our smallest city has less than a hundred people

Nice =)
And interesting. ;-)
Please DO review all castles. Like not instantly but over time. Please do it.
Bottlekiller At least Talmberg. You can't really review Skalitz castle since you can't go inside it
yup, I mean I think he did all skyrim castles, he can probably do all kingdom come castles :)
Oh he'll do it alright. I hope he does the monastery as well, which is under historically accurate construction.
I'd also like to see a short section of some of the fortified homes like Smil's house in Neuhof or the citadel of prisbaslavyits
Review more of them, mate! I'll watch your castle review videos even if they're many hours long.
I just love how he is just talking about the castle's characteristics and then he gets distracted by a random tiny oil lamp 30:30
10/10 vid ♥
Just goes to show: I did two PTs of this game thinking I had explored every nook and cranny but I never discovered that back door starting @ 26:16. I had even been in that stream area quite a few times looking around trying to find a place to sneak into the castle and never saw the entrance. Probably that is why there was no grate - thinking no-one will ever find it (HA!). There is a postern on the other side of the cliff that Shad doesn't show which is a little easier to find and easily traversed on horseback. There is no grate either, just a door and one guard. Easily the biggest security threat because it is very accessible from two directions.
Absolutely the same. I never found that entrance into the castle. My mind was blown when he walked down it into that pond.
0:01 a wild Shad has appeared!
The catch rate with a standard pokeball is 3%, but if you mention that you've a castle with Machicolations, the catch rate is 100%!
*Battle music*
A Pro Tip: You can use the map to better see the layout!
(Also, I love how Shad just walks through the private areas ignoring all the warnings and at 27:50 even the guards trying to arrest him :D )
I so hope warhorse sees this video. So much praise!
Also: Wtf I didn't even know Rattay has a back entrance!
TheSchwarzKater as soon as I next boot the game up, I'm looking for that Postern. There will be many screenshots.
31:37 "Who doesn't want a lot of wood in their life" - Shad, 2018
32:17
[The crapper is right above the archery range and whoever is sitting there has their ass and privates exposed to the world from below]
...This is quite possibly asking for it by giving you the most tempting target in the world to loose at. You know some bored young men are going to be practicing archery and notice someone is on the toilet and... Well... The fact that know what will eventually happens means you know how tempting of a target it would be.
Well, in order to get a good shot, you're gonna have to stand below it and it comes with its own danger.
Cosmas (well known historian and chronica writer) wrote:
„Kochan poslal svého kata a když onen slepec seděl na záchodě v hodině noční, vyprazdňoval břich, proklál ho ostrým oštěpem zezadu až do útrob břišních.“
Which means that executioner was sent in night to kill Jaromír, sending a spear from down below the crapper to arse of Jaromír all the way through his guts.
Cheers!
It's been 5 years Shad. I still would love to see some sequals to this video. Such an amazing game and video.
“I can’t review all of them, there’s just too many.”
Sure Shad, we all know you’re dying to review each one for 30 to 40 minutes a pop.
🍻
im dying for that too
Martin Paták same here 😁
Are there really too many? I have only seen castle at Skallitz, Talmberg, Rattay, and the fortified monastary.
That's pretty much it, excpet if you would want to count the silver-smeltery at Skallitz.
And I would watch all those reviews too
It was such a surreal experience to see how Rattay looks today on google maps. It feels like you've already been there although several hundred years back in time. It was a very strange feeling.
castles = deus vulting general management; armor haute couture nerdcon; spontaneous sword length measuring contests; trashtalking about overpriced unpractical bespoken helmet visors when at the same time somewhere there s a pigeon carrying your order for one for yourself; parking your ride unproperly infront of the hotspots just to show of your barding just arrived from abroad; horseshoe latest customization, balancing and configuration secrets. thats why there were so many castles
For the Epilog of your video, wondering about the name Rattay. In our language it is Rataje. From old Bohemia "Rataj" which means "ploughman" or "peasant".
Is "our language" here Czech? Google translate claims that "rataje" means "rats" in (contemporary) Czech.
@@seneca983 Rat is called "Krysa" in Czech. And it is indeed Czech but the word itself is really archaic and old, probably also lot of people here dont know its meaning. Google translator usually fails in these more "complicated" cases.
@@1PPPete: OK, thanks. Out of curiosity, do you know how much does the modern Czech differ from that of 6 centuries ago?
@@seneca983 Freaking lot. Also the czech language went on lots of modifications through history and in this time, lot of latin was used and the written word is unrecognisable today. Most of words people called things in 15th century doesnt exist anymore, but after all, it would just seem like a very, very bad accent.
>It means peasant
>>No, it means rats
What's the difference? Do ho ho.
I don't know how I got here, but I've been binging a bunch of your castle videos and I'm loving them!
I also can't help but imagine you as this dimensional-hopping bloke in full plate armor that just stomps about the castles ranting about their architecture and defendability while clanking loudly with every footstep. I also picture you always wearing a full face-covering helmet, but with a super long mustache that sticks out of the closed face plate. But then if you see something that either excites or upsets you enough to start really ranting you hold the faceplate open with one hand.
Seriously, your enthusiasm for the subject is infectious and I find myself getting vicariously excited through you. Glad you decided to share this passion with us :)
The bed in 24:28 could indeed be this narrow. They were personal beds for whoever important was living there. You can find beds like these in many real Czech castles :)
38 minutes of quality content...Rare on youtube these days. Thank you.
Fuzzycat true that bro
Hey Shad, you just gained a sub thrue this vid of yours.(and from Bohemia/Czech rep. nonethelles)
We Czechs in real life like the things simple even from our own history up till now.
AND have the mentality of : ´´If its simple and it works DONT fix it.´´ attitude in life as well.
About the firewood thing shad, to this day if you would come to the Czech or Slovakian rep.at houses we still have(if they have a fireplace or a boiler) stocks of wood around sheds, garages, car roofings, chicken coops etc. etc. :D
You czechs make good boots and parkas, or at least your army does.
In the first few silent seconds of the video, I got so suspicious, I preventively took my headphones down!
Wow, what a snowflake.
Sunny Jim too young to recall screamers?
Please do review all of the castle.
They are actually planning to use this game for education at Charles University.
Masaryk's University (based in Brno) already has a course for this autumn semester planned, just about "the hardships representation of medieval period in games as demonstrated in KCD".
31:40 "Who doesn't love a lot of wood in their life?" Best out-of-context quote
I come back to this video every now and again. KCD is such an amazing game. Wish there were more reviews like this.
33:36 that is a root cellar meant for keeping food cool they are still used today in some places

Mike Baker thanks for the research!
Wasn't the former emperor Karl raised in France?
Well done! Insta-SUB!
Yes! I have been wanting this ever since I heard about the game.
(The area behind the gate is also pretty murderous.)
I'm calling Adm. Ackbar.
Trick them in to climbing up the wall and pulling themselves over the top just to fall off the other side because there's no rampart there.
@@jmitterii2 wrong castle

Nevermind, I see you discovered the postern in the lower castle!
Ivr been waiting for this review, rattay is my favourite castles. For reasons, refer to video, but I still was amply waiting for a review like this, thanks daddy shad, and thanks to warhorse for years of hard work paying off!
