- Football Manager has so many things that make us love it. Big teams raiding your great new wonderkid is definitely not one of them. The art of keeping FM’s finest at your smaller-than-PSG club is a refined one. My experience with BATE in Belarus, climbing to a UCL title, I had to practice it over and over. So I’m speaking with experience when I say it’s usually possible to save your wonderkid. Let’s get to work, FM style.
These videos are usually a great combination of tutorial and experience around Football Manager. I am trying to be more clear when fact and opinion diverge, hope that sticks here. This is the type of video that can save your FM experience, so I hope it does! Wonderkids have to be preserved at all costs.

I use the patented "sign a 19 year old on a 9 year contract" method. Five year deal + 1 year after 5 games in their last season + 3 year optional extension. Armini, now the best centre back in the world, is still on 8 grand a week. It's great

I learnt another trick during my time managing lower league clubs:
ALWAYS add the Optional Contract Extension clause when negotiating contracts with your players.
When a big club tries to poach him in the future, and for whatsoever reason you cannot reject the deal, go trigger the optional contract extension as the last hurrah.
The transfer deal will automatically get nullified. No fuss from the player either. You get to keep him for another season while you plot to recontract him again as interest dies down.
Works especially well when the board tries to override you to accept the bid.

What Zealand says is the way to go. One of the tricks I learned to do on my youth intake talents is the following:
- they expect a youth contract, but you know they have PA 140+, so give them a squad player contract with more cash (which will satisfy them immediately)
- add a release clause of at least 80 mil and add contract extension after promotion and optional extension by the club. Since you gave them a good salary, they will not object. Be aware that the extensions only matter after the next year, not the current one. This is the way to keep a young 15 yo player locked in for 7-8 years until you enter the higher divisions.
- if the top clubs start outbidding each other and you feel like the board might cave in and accept a bid, manually set a low asking price for the player and "reject all offers". This tricks the game into bidding low, meaning the board will never go over your head and sell the guy.
That's my favorite thing to do with lower league clubs (as such like Crewe, Bolton and a few others that have a rather decent youth intake).
Underrated, thank you! I am slowly learning the game, I did the right thing by giving the high potential kids a full contract, and let the less talented ones have a youth contract (or let their trial run its course if they were really shit). I actually used the editor to give them a massive release clause because I didn't think of it when signing the contracts in game.
In my experience it all comes down to having loyal and experienced team leaders. If they love you and they're loved by the squad, they will calm down almost every single player who's making a fuss. I managed to keep sooo many players that way. The board thing is shit but after a few seasons they start loving you aswell and you can go "HEY! No! Stop that! I can get more!" And they go "Oh, okay. I'll let you do it then." and so the player is yours once again.

RE: Board selling players. I've found two ways around this:
1. You often get the option in the email to talk the board out of it, if the team is playing well I've had great success convincing them it'd destroy the team to let the player go. In fact I think on my most recent save I've never failed to do this when the option has been available.
2. Offer the player a new contract, if the player loves you (which all my players do) you can have him reject the other team's proposal for your new contract. I don't consider this cheese especially since I've had this happen to me tons of times when buying players where my bid was accepted but the player ended up re-signing with his current team. However if the player wants to leave he won't enter negotiations with you.

@@kisslevente3982 4 mil? That's not bad, when I was playing in a 3rd division Polish team my board sold my newgen that had 182 potential ability, for a little bit over 500 thousands euro. For comparison, Lewandowski current ability in FM20 is around 175.

It's important to know that even if your reputation ends up higher than a team like PSG, Barça or Juventus, they can still unsettle your players because these teams are known to give extremely higher wages to players, you can give the players the contract they want of course but it can still happen even if you have a higher reputation

Zealand! This has renewed my faith. I just cant lose Liam Capuano, the Scottish regen brought through my youth system at Celtic. He wants to move to Liverpool but hes got no chance! I need homegrown players and I plan for him to be future captain. Its Jan 2027 and hes under contract till june 2030.
My captain was upset for 2 years because the board accepted an offer for him and he didn't want to go
You don't need to tattoo anything or write stuff on a piece of paper. Just click on the player, go to History then Notes or Create Notes and add a note (you can even set reminders that repeat or expire)
The Board is the evilest entity ever invented.
Had very poor right-backs and on the day of youth intake, the game blessed me with a 16 year old DR with a current ability of 4 and a half stars. (in Romanian First League, finished 4th)
And at the beginning of next season. Inter offer me 900k € plus some bonuses and the board gives him away. Didn't even got the chance to use him :(
As a last resort, loan the player to a big club, sign a new contract, and recall him in the next transfer window.
Sometimes players via agents force you to sign clause release. That's fine and easy to deal with, just set the asking price lower than player has a release fee and AI will never offer you more than that (ofc reject all inc offers) which means they will never trigger that clause release. If player gets unsettled (which he probably will) just tell him you'll sell him for his clause release (which again they will never offer), he'll cry for a while but eventualy get over it. Works like a charm.
I usually try a contract renewal when it's at 3 years from expiring. I don't do it every year so that I can save some money in contract signature prizes.
I love the shot of the graphs with the steadily increasing income every season, top managing.
You can also stop the board from selling by another way, if the player is worth 50k and your worried the board will over ride you. Go on the the player and set the asking price for a crazy high fee that you know no one will pay, if your asking for say 25 mill for that player the board won’t over ride you because you have set a asking price
What I usually do is 4-5 year contracts with optional contract extension with another 2 years. They usually dont mind that, and i instantly extend their contract after they signed, and they are locked in for 6+ years :D
I have this with a 28 year old Iker Muniain where his loyalty fell first from high to middling to low almost as if he was not wanting to be in a 4th to 7th place team and unsettling the club with influence. However, I turned the proceeds into Mikel Merino from Socialdad on a much larger contract which seemed to appease the board and in big matches with the teammates. Merino's been a mercenary over his career (first team Osasuna, Newcastle, Dortmund, Socialdad all before turning 25).
Remove all unhappiness worked for me.
This was very helpful man thanks just recently lost a super striker who scored 25 goals per season for 4 seasons wish I had known this earlier...

Unlike in real life, "No comment" is one of the best responses you can give at a press conference. Make sure to look at the personality of the reporter asking questions. If you see devious or something similar, he/she is setting you up for the "gotcha" follow-up. This is especially true when they ask about what you think of the other team or coach.

Sometimes the agents are not good at making demands, you can use the release clause to make too high for the deal to be feasible for the clubs; so when they swoop in(sometimes they still do like PSG for Neymar or in my save, Liverpool for Declan Rice from my Ajax squad), we get all the money in the world to get 3 players almost his level.

There’s another way to stop a sale if the board goes over your head or a release clause is triggered. If you have a club-triggered extension clause in your contract with the player, keep it as your silver bullet. When the offer is accepted, just trigger it while the player and the team are in contract negotiations, and it’ll cancel the deal and usually result in the buying club losing interest or having to pay more.

In lower leagues when you know you won't be able to keep them, sell them with the biggest onsell percentage and loan them back for two years, you at least have them for those two years which could be a massive help.
I think release clauses are a bit underrated here.
You can give them large release clauses that clubs are unlikely to meet (and if they do, you make a fat wedge of cheddar), and remind them of the release clause if they get unsettled. I've never had it fail to resettle a player, but bad personalities might not respond so well.
I'm not sure about this, but if the player wants to leave for a low fee, try to negotiate for that fee, but add in one of their high value players to swap for. Make sure it's someone useful, in case it goes through. But generally they will walk away, or if not at least you'll have another player.
If you fear the board might step in on a player when you receive an offer that you can reject. Instead of rejecting the offer, negotiate the offer for something ridiculous like £300M. The buying club will lose interest and don't make a second bid. This can upset the player but if you speak to them first and try and convince them to stay first they don't get mad either.
The last one is just great
Forget reputation having anything yo do with it. You can build your club to the highest ranking and best reputation. If you arent offering wages similar to PSG, Real Madrid and City they are gone. Refusal to give someone 400,000 a week is the reason I have these wonderkid wanting to leave when they are on a contract at 30,000 a week. Offering star player and 150,000 will not keep them!

Zealand, you can also offer up to an 8 year contract. 5 year deal and option to extend for a further 3 years. I usually lock that in then up the wage and signing on fee
The more common frustrating aspect I’ve run into more, is selling a deadwood player and they keep rejecting contracts from other clubs that have agreed on transfer. I always take away selling team salary contribution to get rid of their high wages and I can’t seem to get around it when I do.
Into my 6th season in my Norwich save, and whenever a big club comes in for my players, 9/10 the player wants to stay at my club. Same with young players who are on fringes. No idea what I've done, but it's brilliant

set a very low asking price for your player (eg. 1M for a player who is valued 15M) big clubs will make that 1M offer despite being capable of offering a lot more. when you reject it, your player knows that it was a bad offer and won't ask you why you didn't let him go. works well, but you will get a lot of offers all the time; requires patience.
(In FM23) I once had the board sell my best player, some wonderkid, to FC Bayern (from the smallest Aussie team) for $2.1M and then complain about _me_ selling him for the next year.
I guess your problem over the weekend was not having enough wonderkids then...

You can also chat to the board and have them reject the offer. Odsonne Edourd was a target for Chelsea in my save they offered £80 mill for hm and board accepted I spoke them and they agreed to cancel the deal. Sadly they came back a bit later with £107 million the board accepted I agreed with this one even though I didn't want to lose him. £107 million for a player in the Scottish premier league can't be refused. I purchased Joshua Zirkzee for £27 mil in his 2nd season scored 39 goals in 41 games. Current season 21/22 he has scored 22 goals before December.

Playing as Hammarby (swedish premier) in FM18 and just lost 2 of my strikers yesterday, although they weren't wonderkids but still really high quality (Lazio bought one). Kinda a curse playing in Sweden, has a nice rule set but the clubs have a small reputation internationally. The only comfort I have is that I get to re-invest the money in facilities and buying good youth players who will be better than the ones I've sold.
Pesky is a very light word when it comes to Chelsea, City and PSG. Repulsive is the word I use and I thought I were nice.
OT : Never brake a promise to a player and sign them for new a contract the second a big club is interested. Sometime I have given a player a new contract 2 or 3 times during the summer just to keep him happy and keep away interest.
I’ve had to give some players the big star promise to get them in, I’m in the premier league now and I’ve looked at the comparisons and my team ranks very low on most things, some we’re just below the cusp of average. I feel that there’s no need to panic though, as we’ve been promoted 6 times and when you think about it we’ve never actually settled in a division so for the players that can develop a lot more it’s going to take time
Player is upset because you reject offer -> tell him that you will sell him if x club offer x mln $ -> ignore that and set asking price to 500$ with reject all transfer offers automatically - wait when the sell promise gonna be dropped -> hes happy and you will be able to offer him new contract
Also you can do that if player have clause

In my Athletic Bilbao save all best clubs was interested in my 18year old striker wonderkid and he was happy to stay after i offered him fantastic contract as Star Player but after that he had major drop in his professionalism so be carefull. After contract he was happay but my ass man told me he become more complacent and his personality changed from proffesional to balanced. He is 24 now and still great but i guess he would become even better if i handled it better.
buy between 3-10 wonder kids a year...every year (budget permitting) if you cant get wonder kids get the next step down, keep doing it over and over and you will win more titles than you lose within 5 years

Set the ask value to zero and then keep rejecting all offerd until the window closes. Wait a while, keeping the player happy and then offer a new contract.

"Give them a long contract". That's great and all, if you board will allow you to make contracts that are longer than 12 months.
So of the situations are warranting a sale as you can’t always hold onto these players it’s sometimes best to sell them on to further their career and can help the team

I really wish FM would add a feature in which a player who is unhappy or demanded a transfer refuses to play for the club. Players who won't play until they are out. Happens all the time in real life no reason it shouldn't happen in FM. I think it's a big thing missing honestly but then again I prefer things as close to real as possible.
Well, then you should also have jncluded the possibility for the club to press legal charges in such a case. Happens all the time in RL. And also the chance of a player dying, happens all the time.

Well I am at a similar position now. I am in the Turkish League and won last year. Even qualified out of Champions league group and somehow beat Man City 1-0 by scoring from counter in the quarter finals.
But my homegrown turkish wonderkids already started to draw interest from the big boys. I am also the manager of Turkish national team and he scored 10 goals in 9 national games...soo he is a star.
My Board sold a key player before after I convinced them to not to sell ( stupid team comes with a slightly better offer and BAM ). So I am worried the same thing will happen to this guy as well.
My problem is they always have the release clause as non negotiable

Whenever my board tries to force sell one of my players I just release them on a free out of spite. Do I always keep my job? That isnt the point.
Something I do to stop this isto accept an offer and then I add in a random manager to the team who wants my player and a change in management cancels every transfer
Contract extension at the start of the season and then set it to activates at the end of the season
Noone else found this hack? Just offer him to clubs for decent money, but add a mandatory clause "sign a ..striker.. first" (or choose a position he has, ot the one you really do not need to improve at this window). The rest of transfer window the deal is considered as done, however in the end of transfer window you receive a message if you want to sell him anyway. If you decline, other clubs have only a day or two to grab him. You are welcome ;-)
