  • Years of political instability and conflict left Iraq deeply destabilized, with massive resources allocated to the war effort while infrastructure in more than one third of the country deteriorated immensely impacting the health care system and people’s access to health care services.
To respond to the emerging critical needs, including for displaced communities, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) scaled up activities in areas where displaced people were settling, close to the front lines and in other locations across the country. Before handing over activities to the Directorate of Health this year, MSF’s activities in Hawija took a holistic approach to the treatment of chronic diseases, prioritizing mental health care and health promotion, education about lifestyle risk factors, and improving mental well being. In an area where mental health experts are scarce, this has meant investing in coaching local staff to deliver these services to a community that has experienced a crisis.
