Its amazing how much better the game was then. My first year watching Green Bay was 1988 (10 years old) I always loved us as the underdogs. The 49ers were legendary and this was a hallmark victory and a sign of future years to come when Green Bay would rise up to become champions, in the NFLs smallest city.

Thanks for posting this! This was the year of the Cardiac Kids. Huge Packer fan here but never saw this game since I just entered Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood. Heard about the win and thought it was such a big win for Green Bay at the time. It’s kind of the real start of relevancy in the NFL in my opinion even though they did suffer two really down years in 1990 (6-10) and 1991 (4-12) before things picked up with Wolf, Holmgren, Favre, and company and continued for the next 20+ years. I was used to a lot of really bad 80s Packer football and convinced I would never see them go to Super Bowl, much less win two (too young for their 60s glory years)

Wrong dude the cardiac kids where are the 1979 and 1980 Cleveland Browns

It’s funny because, like the last commenter, I too wanted to point out that the Browns were the cardiac kids. GB was the cardiac Pac. Anyways, where you were in 1989 is where I’ve been my entire life. Maybe one of these days the Brownies will make it to a SB. They were so close when I was a kid. Damn John Elway. PS, Lindy Ifante, the HC of GB in 1989, was the Browns O-coordinator from 1986-1987. He was a brilliant OC.

In 1989 if the nfl had the 6 team playoff format with 4 divisions and 2 wildcards the packers would have been the 6th seed. At this time only 5 teams from each conference made the playoffs.

It was the last season in that format. 1990 added a WC team.

Packers went toe to toe that day with the soon to be Super Bowl champs and defense rose up to stop Montana when he was at the top of his game. Great memory.

The Packers really thought Don "Majik" Majikowski was going to be the savior for the franchise. When he was healthy he could a top 10 QB, but sadly he couldn't stay healthy. As a result the 90 and 91 teams were disappointing that cost Lindy Infante his job. Then the Packers were 0-2 going into the Bengals game. Luckily getting Mike Holmgren and trading for Favre who no one knew except for GM Ron Wolf turned out to be a game changer for the next 30 years. Majik went down again with a broken leg. Favre came in and the last drive with his team down 6 took them down the field and NFL history has never been the same. The Packers have had 2 QB's in 30 years. Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

I miss this era(80's and 90's) so much! The game was just so much more physically brutal back then.Referees allowed players to be more aggresive without constant flags being thrown.Players might be bigger and stronger in todays game but the are certainly not as tough! Do you really think Tom Brady could play 20 years in this era? Not a chance! Thats why players in this era earn my respect. Maybe in an alternate universe we could have a league like this again. Not the crappy gentrified
    version of today.

I joke with my son, who is 34 now, that I became a Packer fan in 1972 (the playoff loss to the Redskins on Christmas Eve), and from that point on, until my son was born in November of 1989, the Packers went something like 86 -150 (ballpark but very close). Anyway, I sat with my 6 day old son in my lap, and watched this game on TV, in Napa, CA and they won. One of only two losses that year for the Niners, and it was AT Candlestick. From that point on, until now, the Packers are roughly 249 -207, won 2 superbowls and played in 3. So logically, my son is personally responsible for pulling the Packers out of that malaise they were in during the entire 70's and 80's LOL
Watching this makes me tear up, because of the memory of my infant son sitting on my lap, and watching (well, he was there with me anyway LOL) it with his Dad.
Side note. My father went out on Christmas in 1972, and bought me a Green Bay Packers helmet from Montgomery Wards, and it was the first present I opened up, the next day on Christmas. I still have that helmet, and it sits by the television every Packer gameday.

The first game I remember also was the 72 packers redskins playoff game. I was 10 and remember the room and tv that I watched it on. A few weeks later I remember my dad having a Super Bowl party with the dolphins playing

@@danjacobsen7645 - By that time I was living in Lexington, KY (born in New York, but my Dad was an IBM'er and got relocated from Poughkeepsie) Not sure where you grew up, but Packer news was non-existent in Kentucky back then, so the next year, my Dad got me a subscription to Ray NItschke's Packer Report (as it was known by back then) I LOVED getting that, and devoured it as soon as it came in the mail.

I'm a Packer fan and this game was one hell of an upset! I think I chewed all my fingernails off watching this game! The Packers went 10-6 that season. 10-6 was a big deal to us Packer fans after so many crappy seasons in the 70s and 80s!

This was a very special season, maybe my favorite ever as a Packer fan. The team had generally been pretty poor for most of the '80s... and then this season came out of nowhere. There were lots of reasons the Packers got much better in '89, but two of the big ones were Majkowski and Sharpe. The Packers won a few games with ridiculous comebacks (before big scoring and pass-happy offenses were the norm), but this game against the 49ers was a straight-up grinder, and the Packers came out on top. They beat probably the best team of the '80s on the road, and it wasn't a fluke. It is absolutely one of the best regular season wins in franchise history.
And no matter what anyone says, this is the season that set the stage for all of the subsequent success for the franchise. The Packer brass became convinced that the organization could be relevant again, and the surprising signing of Reggie White a few years later was the culmination of their efforts to reinvigorate the team. The Packers have largely been good to great ever since.

Just the game I was looking for! With the 4 one point victories, and the crazy comebacks, people tend to forget how good this Packers team was in 1989. They were one of just two teams that season to beat one of the greatest NFL teams ever assembled. And the other team was a divisional rival, so shit happens there. The Packers got two big breaks with the fumbled punt and the offsides call on the pick six, but the 49ers got a break of their own with Fullwood's fumble when the Packers were driving again.

The 49ers two best teams of the 1980's (1984 and 1989) went a combined 16-0 on the road. That is insane. Three losses of 1, 4, and 4 to the 84 Steelers, 89 Rams, and 89 Packers, two of which played in the conference championship games those respective seasons.

2nd of only two losses that year, both at home. Great season! Chet brooks, who took over for the great Jeff fuller, had an all pro year! He got jipped on the pik six! Besides “The Catch” candlestick park was as loud as it ever was that day, cuz we knew it was bs! Good game Green Bay

People act like Majkowski gave up on Green Bay. The man could barely walk when he retired. He gave 100% every game. He will always be my favorite Packer!
