With an historical perspective, it is interesting how this propaganda film mix music, images, and text. Seems clearly (February 1945) that Germany is doing well and they were getting a lot of victories against Soviets.
But if you pay attention you'll see that boots were and trousers were in shreds, the soldiers were not longer looking martial, the disparity of uniforms and probably units.

The terror of aerial bombings was counter-productive, though. You cannot easily surrender when your city is under that type of attack against the civilian population.

Sven Hedin's birthday was in February. Also, On 8 February 1945, Rudel was badly wounded in the right foot, but landed inside German lines. Rudel's leg was amputated below the knee. He nevertheless returned to flying on 25 March. So this newsreel is from February 1945.

In the early part of the video the ,Arbeitsmaiden' ( working maids) of ,Reichsarbeitsdienst' are noted. My grandmother ( 1910- 1995) told me , that one of such ,Arbeitmaiden' had to help her father ( my greatgrandfather) , who was ,Farrenwärter' ( breeding bull warden) of the village. His work was ordinary farmers work, but for bulls owned by village. One day my grandmother, her father ( veteran of wwl) and the young ,Arbeitsmaid' worked on a meadow to make hay ( sidenote: german Heu and Stroh/ hay and straw/ are spoken in my dialect like a mix of english and german). Suddenly a plane came, the three hide in a group of bushes., and the plane threw two bombs. Nobody was hurt, but the Arbeitsmaid was so shocked, that she fell into the arms of my greatgrandfather and cried: Mr.... we will die! The US pilot didn' t want to kill civilians, what often happened, he threw the bombs before an emergency landing , because his plane had problems.
They were right to hide though since there are countless accounts of allied planes hunting down and strafing civilians. There's also nothing strange about a plane bombing a farm late in the war.

The Krauts are an amazing people. This was produced right on the brink of their ultimate surrender. I've read they played their League Soccer matches into April of 1945, and the German Army was still granting its soldiers leave up until that time as well. They're nothing if not orderly.

Hauptmann Rudel was mentioned in five Wochenschau newsreels. March 27th 1944, March 28th 1944, June 3rd 1944, August 6th 1944 and February 10th 1945. So this has to be the latter.

7:48 "heldenhafte Kampf in Budapest". As Victor Klemperer and Friedrich Kellner pointed out in their diaries, "heldenhaft" (heroic) was a code word for imminent desastrous defeat.
When the propaganda started talking about "heldenhafte Kämpfe in Stalingrad" in Jan 1943, everybody in Germany understood that it was nearly over.
It was actually heroic though - a few hundred German and Hungarian soldiers actually managed to break out of the siege and fight their way to friendly lines through 60 km of hostile territory.
Were there many cinemas by this time? What was the point of making them, other than to make work at the propaganda ministry?
No, there were few operating cinemas in Germany in April-May 1945
There were probably some around. Probably not a crazy amount but people probably went to them.

Not many for sure. One of the last big budget propaganda movies (Kolberg) was released in January 1945 solely in two of the last operating movie theaters in Berlin and nowhere else in Germany as transporting film reels had become a logistical impossibility.

Interesting to see the facial hair on the Wehrmacht officers late and the hodgepodge of (un)uniforms in the war...they looked like pirates or biker gang leaders, which in some ways they were by then.
Propaganda not shy about showing German civilian bodies (to instill revenge) or Soviet bodies(revenge taken), but never bodies of German soldaten or smoldering German Panzers.
These are the films that Der Herr auf der Höhenburg is trying to smuggle into a parallel reality.
Until Stalingrad, the world of the "newsreel" was still real. After that, however, reality played a subordinate role. It is very difficult to wage war with the truth.
Especially when the "truth" was raining down on the heads of most Germans in the form of bombing raids on their major cities...
31 Dec 1945 should read an earlier date like 31 Dec 1944 perhaps. The war ended on 09 May 1945.

I'm no history expert, however I believe the war in Europe ended May 1945 . . .
31 Dec 1945 is the date this newsreel was classified and booked in the US archives, not the actual date this Wochenschau was published or shown in the theaters. Mind you, in early 1945 there weren't many theaters left to show these newsreels. Most film theaters were bombed out, or closed. So few people will have seen this stuff.

Now what will really blow your mind is how similar post fall of France pre US entry British propaganda is from the time frame that if Britain was attached to the mainland and not an island it would have fallen.

Idiot! A film reel is a spool to wind motion picture film on. A standard reel can contain about 10 minutes of film. In the old days film length was counted in reels. Old slapstick movies of the tens and twenties were called one-reelers or two-reelers, depending on length.

It was said more as humor. But I wouldn't say they ran like Jackals. Most did want to stay out of Russian hands, that's true. But the Russians didn't sustain 300,000 casualties in the Battle of Berlin from running men.
No. The Russians advanced on all fronts in January 1945. They pulled up to the Oder River and then built up their forces there for the final push on Berlin. I don't know why you would think the Germans were winning in early 1945. That was when Hitler went to hide in his bunker and never came out again.
Was just sarcasm on the Newsreels my friend. I know the military history of that time. Goebbels job was to build morale and give hope so they would keep fighting. He was pretty good at it with selective, edited and often staged filming. He projected a very sanguine view of things.
@@aristedecomgmailcom Hitler made it to Argentina; the CIA got a pic of him in Venezuela (?) In 1955 when he had to step out during the Peron wrap-up, but he lived into the 1970s. How happy he was is another question...
