      Here in Colombia (and I guess some other develping economies), Accounting and finance are a separate thing. Professional accountants tend to choose the accounting path, and other professions are left with the other three (If you are not a certified accountant you cannot legally do some things. like being an auditor or corporate accounting)

      Try to pull off that degree without racking up a pile of student loan debt. Lack of any kind of debt will make your life considerably more easy. I speak from experience. At 31 you will have more difficulty landing corporate jobs. If it were me I would be looking at the Federal Government because they will not age discriminate like the private sector. Don't screw around and waste time. I see plenty of guys mid to upper 30s and higher with no specific skills or a good degree. What kind of future will they have? At least if you have a good degree that teaches marketable skills you have potential even if you are unemployed for a while or underemployed. Avoid student debt like the plague and be flexible and able to relocate for the job.

    Great video! Very informational, short, and sweet. However, I disagree with the statement that finance majors can take on accounting roles. They technically "can" take on accounting roles. Although, ultimately, if you're considering an accounting role, I recommend majoring in accounting. Accounting firms prefer an accounting student over a finance student. This is something I've learned through personal experience at job fairs and via recruiting for my accouting firm. Just some food for thought.

    Good information! I’m looking to start my finance degree next semester. 2 questions, what do you do now that you’ve finished undergrad. And how important do you believe the prestige of the school you attended truly is during the hiring process, or is it more experience based?

    • @thefinancemajor.
      @thefinancemajor.  6 років тому +10

      Hey Brandon, great questions! (1) I now work as a Risk Analyst at a "bulge bracket" investment bank in NYC. (2) I think the prestige of your school matters to a certain extent, as successful finance programs often have vast networks of alumni and strong recruitment funnels into the most desirable companies. Prestige can help get you the interview, but it won't get you the job. Before starting my current job, I attended a mid-size public university in the Midwest and landed an internship on Wall Street with NO prior work experience within finance. My prior work experience included construction and farm work (no, I'm not kidding). It's about being able to sell your story and explain why you're different.
