  • Peniscola (or Peñíscola) is the Gibraltar of Valencia. Peniscola is a fortress build on a rocky island with a lighthouse. Peniscola was founded by the Phoenicians and the Greek and was known in antiquity 'Chersonessos', meaning the peninsula in Greek. The castle on the island was built in the Middle Ages by the Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307 to defend Spain (and Europe) against Muslim Arab raids and conquests from Northern Africa.
Oropesa del Mar (or Orpesa) is a coastal town south of Peniscola. Oropesa has many newely developed quarters and a population of 10,000.
