  • Afghan Warlords (2009): Despite shady pasts, powerful warlords are given recognition from Washington in return for their support fighting drug-traffickers and the Taliban. We take a look at Americas new pragmatic approach.

One such character is Gul Agha Sherzai, aka The Bulldozer and Governor of Nangarhar for the last five years. After striking a political deal with President Karzai, he became a powerbroker to be reckoned with. Ruling from his Jalalabad palace, Sherzai shows off his power: The Taliban is no danger. I have defeated them. By Afghan standards, security in his region has drastically improved along with an impressive fall in drugs production. Its hard to argue that hes been anything but a success enthuse US counter-narcotics officials. However, his past is less than pristine. An expert on the region says: To be an effective leader there, at some point you had to have been involved in the commission of atrocities, together with the accumulation of enormous wealth and that means Opium.' Sherzai allegedly got wealthy during his time as governor of Kandahar taking a cut from the opium profits from the area. While his former associate has been serving a life-sentence in the US, hes been enjoying a high-profile collaboration with Washington. Why? Theres a perception among the West that hes somebody who can be rehabilitated. He was simply deemed more useful.

there's one thing that people will always fail to realize my friends is that generations of afghans have grown up in war, still are in war and will always be in war. It is their nature of doing things and they have learnt it by growing up in war times.

I am absulately buffled firsly for them taking the credit for fighting and winning the drug issues in afganistan when they are clearly supporting the drug lords. Secondly you never see the taliban working with criminals, here is the americans telling us without this criminals there is no victory in afganistan and the demons are the talibs do they really think we are that stupid?

I remember during the Taliban era, he was hiding in Pakistan. When the USA attacked Kandahar, I was living in a small refugee camp in Pakistan, and saw his black land-cruisers, about 20-30, stormed through our village toward Kandahar. He is from the Sherzai "son of a lion" tribe, but in reality he is a Pakistani spy, who sold half of Kandahar to Pakistan. He has no education, and can hardly carry a conversation with the reporter. I am ASHAMED of these type of people who call themselves leaders.

Alright so, I’m just going to point out the Taliban is a group of Afghan people who were migrated to Iran or Pakistan (Pakistan had the Taliban not Iran but a lot of Afghan people migrated there) because of the soviet invasion of Afghanistan and when the Soviets pulled out it was complete anarchy. Warlords ruled Afghanistan and if you watched the video they did terrible things. Also the Taliban came and killed most of the warlords and kept under control for they were didn’t want more people killed in anarchy. I really don’t know much about who flew into the twin tower at 9/11 (I am extremely sorry if I offended people about this subject and if they are sensitive to this) but George W.H Bush ordered a invasion of Afghanistan and obviously the Afghan war was 20 years (you can correct me how long it is) and is still going out now

Because American not only make bad choices but also repeating it again and again.
People in Afghanistan hate both taliban and govt.
While taliban still had a better reputation than govt because of they belong to Afghan people and not corrupt.

The ANA have lost how many men in your fight ? And you still say nuke them ? The Taliban were doing your countries dirty work in the 80's and the US loved them, loved them enough to bring them to America for a nice holiday in 1996. You know what they say about Aghanistan ? It's the graveyard of empires.

@NUMBER1PAKHTOON , from 1700 til 1979, the government of afghanistan was absolutely independant. there were times that foreign occupations did occur but that was our bad luck. but... during those operations we had sell outs from pashtun, tajik, uzbek, turkmen, nuristani. all sell outs that shift sides with powerful side. you see what u see right now everyone is on american side right now because they are powerful. if they weren't , i dont think karzai would stand 4 days in kabul.

As for "The Bull-doser" people can change, the African National Congress of South Africa was once a horrible terrorist org, do you think we shouldn't be supporting them cuz of their past?

  • @999across

In AF your alliances will never be ideal. To wage a unconventional war one must be willing to work w/ the proverbial devil. Being a warlord is self explanatory title; whether or not the brass or the politicians knew is irrelevant. Today's war are not uniformed wars. They are asymmetrical & needs a military that is fluid & versed in special operations. Thankfully, the US military is finally listening to the brass & is making the proper cuts/additions in regards to the current unwieldy force we have now.

People are upset that Pashtuns are Taliban and even that is racist. We are Pashtuns and hate the taliban..who doesnt hate the taliban. It's so sad and upsetting when Afghans themselves live with stereotypes :(
In the mid 70s and early 80s the capital of Afghanistan was very modern and advanced. The south and more rural areas were still behind and there was no education and people couldn't read and write. The same was in the south of the country were most Pashtuns live. Those families got the chance to educate their young boys. Pakistan offered free education in Pakistan. Everyone got happy and sent their children. These were the Taliban. The word Taliban means Students. These Student went abroad to get an education, and became masters in religious knowledge. It was considered as something very noble and high. Little did the poor families back home know that Pakistan had a dirty plan. They created religious schools (Madrasas) where they started educating these teenagers. Teenagers that were completely illiterate before that. Once they came back after being completely brain washed they had learned nothing about Islam. They were thought that they were Pashtuns and should fight the other ethnic minorities, they were told that the west is evil and that they should hate them no matter what. They were brain washed into believing that Kabul was a place where there were no muslims. The south of Afghanistan lost one whole generation of bright young individuals like this. Next thing happened in Afghanistan. After coming back to Afghanistan, these Taliban (Students) had gathered a lot of respect now. They could read, write and had knowledge about the religion. Next thing they do is, they created Madrasas in the south of Afghanistan. Everyone got happy once again as not everyone was able to sent their sons to Pakistan for an education. The next generation was also brain washed. Today there are still madrasas in Pakistan and we know that the main basis of the Taliban is in Pakistan in the city Quota (The capital of Baluchistan). Yet Americans have not invaded Pakistan and consider Pakistan as an Ally. Osama Bin Laden was found in Pakistan, yet nato with over 50 countries is in Afghanistan. The Pashtun comunity has fallen victim to this nasty war and we lost too many bright young individuals. Right now the Pakistani government is talking to other ethnic groups like Tajiks Uzbeks and Hazaras. Saying look at the Pashtons, they are Talibs they are ruining your country. They wont tell them that the Taliban is a creation of Pakistan and this way we Afghans will fight with each other. The head of the intelligence in Afghanistan had told the USA and Pakistan that Osama Bin Ladan was in Pakistan and even named a city four years before he finally got caught. Four Years later Osama was indeed found living in a military area in that same area Afghans had told you all about! Why is Pakistan the country that trains the taliban and sends them to Afghanistan even ignored? I love all my Afghan brothers. whether Pashtun, Tajik, Sikh, Hazara, Uzbek, Turkmen, Baloch, Pashayi etc. Peace.

People that aren't ignorant of the situation are aware of the Saudi and Pakistani involvement in the creation of violent Taliban. This is why there are drone strikes in Pakistan allowed by the Pakistan government in the training camps and leaders. The reason the U.S. come into Afghanistan is because the official government was Taliban so they came to Afghanistan to kick them out. Now Afghan government is allies with NATO too. Don’t worry too much now Afghans won’t blame each other for their problems now they can blame America.

I just listened a little bit more. the journalist is another dude wants fame and fortune. He is no different this guy is accompanying and interviewing Gul Agha Sherzai, ISI is the main contributor and financier to this guy's reporting because this kind of reporting is going to help no other community but ISI. the world of journalism is the same as the world of medical doctors the medical doctors went to school and learned how to help the needy but at the end doctor's main goal is to make money. ISI encourages and pays I would say pretty good money to journalists to spin the situation in Afghanistan the doctors take an oath after they graduate medical school to serve and help the patience no matter what. PROVE ME WRONG, if you could, I beg you.

So what? It's the way that country has been for thousands of years. Even Alexander the Great described the Afghans as people who adopted tribal feuding and intrigue as a national past-time.(paraphrasing of course.) Did we really expect them to suddenly adopt our western liberal democracy system and start drinking Starbucks while typing out ideas for their new start up companies after we invaded? It took thousands of years for democracy to develop in western Europe and the US. From ancient Greece to today. And we're still ironing out the many flaws. Institutional change is not something that can be forced from the outside. It has to develop from the inside though a process of education and incentives. And (hopefully) improved upon by each new generation in a virtuous cycle. The events leading up to the French revolution is what caused France and later western Europe to adopt the ideas of separation of power, of representative democracy, of checks and balances. And it took another 100 years of struggle for universal suffrage to be adopted.
Are we really so arrogant to assume that we can change their traditions and customs in a few decades? I doubt it. And I doubt that that is really the motive behind this whole endeavour. I doubt that this country is anything more than a pion in a geopolitical chess game between the Superpowers.

Africa is in a mess because of the people - nothing more.. If you don't want to farm the land, you don't eat.. If you can't work together and would rather fight each other, you have unrest. The nature of a people affects the culture; its a simple concept that is ignored nowadays as it doesn't fit the politically correct "One World" dogma.
