    S420 owner here. My bridge is slightly different and it comes with an intonation screw which doesn't require me to restring the guitar. I have been eyeing this 1070 for YEARS literally, but the bridge was scaring me off. This man's video eased me into it and I decided to pull the trigger on this one instead of upgrading my pups. Appreciate it.

    It's one of the best videos about Edge Zero setup. I thought the bolts at the far end were for the intonation but I see you are using it for the fine tuning once the locking bolts are put back. The guitar would scream but had this beautiful clean in position 4 and then this crazy creamy lead tone in position 5. Teh double red is insanely hot. great for metal and rock. The blue and silver are very smooth. great for classic rock and blues. I have a friend that had a Eric Clapton Fender with 3 lace sensor golds and it sound amazing, although not good for serious rock or metal. The tone zone is a very good pickup. It is more towards the hot side and great for metal and rock. I love DeMarzio pups but the set in that guitar are the standard Ibanez pups they put in everything except for my 5320, 1120 or the artist models like the Vai. But it really comes down to what you want to play. Is it Metal, rock, blues, country etc. So what I do is I figure out what I am using that guitar for and then go from there. I'm fairly new to all this, but the neck seems ok, feels fine, no fret buzz, etc. The wenge fretboard has a different feel, and the neck is not as smooth as I thought it might be. I was wondering what the best way to care for the neck/ fretboard is? Do you oil the fretboard, and if so, what works best? Have you had any issues with the different more corse woods of this neck? I looked up care of wenge and purple heart woods, etc, and all I could find was stuff on furniture care. Lol. Again, thanks for all the videos you're making. To adjust the truss rod, while holding the guitar if you are a righty, use your allen wrench and pull towards you. This will straighten the neck. Move away from you it will add relief. There is a bit more to it then just the truss rod but this is the jumping off point. I will be doing a video on neck adjustment to kinda finish out the series.

    thanks a lot for such a detailed instructions on how to set the intonation
    I have Ibanez RG370DX (all black) Edge Zero Tremolo and I took it out of the closet after 10 years of not using it. I want to go back to playing the guitar, I need to learn everything from scratch pretty much. I barely remember chords, and minor pentatonic scale. I really lost all the skills and memory.
    my B string (2nd thinnest) is not tuning on the high frets, very badly. I figured it must be the intonation problem.
    I just don't understand why all the strings have relatively similar saddle position,, including the B string. and yet B string is SO OUT OF TUNE. the 12th fret harmonic sounds off almost near the 13th fret. I don;t have the electronic guitar tuner, but B string sounds flat, the higher frets we go.
    I don't know which direction to move the saddle. I've been trying for hours, WITHOUT THE TUNER (well I have built-in tuner for the open strings in the amplifier, so I know the open strings are perfectly tuned). I was moving the saddle up and down for many hours, and the problem is still there.
    I already ordered the electronic guitar tuner, and waiting for it now.
    any idea why B string intonation differs so much from 5 other strings?
    I wish the saddle position could be fine adjusted using some horizontal screw. this system is not very friendly at all, when it comes to intonation. I am really frustrated not being able to adjust it.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Generally with the problem you’re having it is the internation. They do make a tool that locks onto the saddle that you can adjust with very finite movements but more than likely you will have to order that because I doubt the local guitar store would have one. The only other way which is a pain in the ass is to move it literally 1 mm at a time lock it down retune it and keep doing it. And just for the sake of argument have you replaced the strings? You need to make sure that that is the correct string on the guitar for that position or that the string is not just completely dead. If the string is short you need to move the saddle away from the neck. If the string is flat you need to move the saddle towards the neck. Internation can be a hassle to set but it is critically important for the guitar to play correctly.

    • @TigerCarpenter
      @TigerCarpenter 3 роки тому

      @@Guitars-GearandMusic yes I am waiting for the 3 sets of the new strings (2x Ernie Balls Super Slinky, 1x D'Addario EXL110), the ones in the guitar are very old, and not played for a very long time.
      you must be right about the strings, but I will only be able to test it when the new ones arrive.
      I moved the saddle so many times in this painful process of loosening the string, then moving the saddle 0.5mm, re-tightening the string, tuning it etc. that I probably nearly destroyed the threads in the bolt's socket. I hope I didn't.
      for someone who never played for 10 years, it will take some time to rediscover everything.
      thanks for your reply and suggested solution. I'm pretty sure you nailed it.

    Thanks for making this vid! I just bought this s1070pbz back in June and had no idea how to change the strings. Love the rounded stainless steel frets, so Incredible smooth. One thing I’m not sure about tho is when I press down hard on the trem arm I hear a pop/click by the nut. Tried tightening the nut, maybe I should try without the locking nut on it. Anyway thanks again for all the tips you share on your channel.... Your such a wealth of knowledge!

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  4 роки тому

      Sometimes if you hear a click at the nut it is usually from the low E or A string. the trem holds tension against the strings and when you relax them they still have tension from the tuner side and it will pull the string in the saddle. Mine has done this and what I was hearing was the winding on the lower strings moving just a little bit in the locking nut from the tuner side and you get a pop from the ridge on the winding. Since it is a guitar and very resonate, it is a lot louder than you would think. Tune up the guitar and then wail on the trem for a couple of minutes and everything should seat in and be fine. Let me know if this helps. Thanks

    Once you destring, floyd string blocks are loose in the saddle too, and will fall out of the saddle if you flip the guitar front down. To combat this, use a 3 inch piece of scotch tape on top of the saddles to hold the saddle blocks in place. When you're ready to put the strings in, the scotch tape comes off easily and leaves no noticeable residue.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  5 місяців тому

      Yes they come loose but the Ibanez blocks will literally pop out when you pull the string out. I have never really had that issue with floyd type blocks.

      @Guitars-GearandMusic  2 роки тому +1

      @@Bairov Ok. This is a balancing act. You can adjust the knob to your trem to bring them sharp and in tune but this will not solve the issue in the long run. First always do this with new strings. This is what I do to all my guitars when I get them. Put on the new strings. Do not lock them at the nut. Stretch them a lot then retune. Do it again and again until you get the strings very little out of tune when you stretch them. Tune the guitar then set you trem to the desired height. I keep mine pretty level. After you set the trem where you want it retune the guitar. This will move the trem of course. Turn the knob again to get it back where you want it then retune. Keep doing this until you have the tuning correct and the trem in the right place. You are trying to balance the in tune tension of the strings to the amount of tension they put on the trem and you may have to do this several times to get it correct. After all that is balanced, screw the fine tuners all the way out and tune the guitar a touch flat. Put on you locks and then use the fine tuners to bring back into pitch and all should be well. If you do this correctly it will take you a little time but well worth the extra work.

    Hey Trace, may I know if the zero point system (ZPS) at the back of the guitar work better than the normal claw and screw version? I've had an edge 3 tremolo and tuning was a nightmare especially since the bridge fluctuates so much during tuning...so much so that I'd rather just go with a hardtail guitar. But I don't want to give up on the tremolo system if the ZPS solves the tuning instability problem. I'm sure you've tried both claw and zps....what's your take?

      Man I love the zero system. I love it so much that I don't play my prestige as much as my premium and that is a big part of it. To me is seems much more stable, has a lot better feel to it and it seems to hold tune better. I wish they would put it on the prestige with the lopro, or put the lopro on the premium. I just played a 4 hour show last night and used my EVH Wolfgang and my 1120 premium. tuned both when I got there because of the humidity and did not have to retune for the entire show. On my prestige, I find I have to tune it once if not twice during the show. Its not out by much but enough for me to notice.

    ALSO! is it advantageous to remove the zero point system? i’m looking for trem arm sound similar to that of Jason Becker/Shawn Lane (just vocal sounding uses of trem!) will the zero point system support that kind of playing? ^__^

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  3 роки тому

      The zero point system is crazily stable. I would not remove that. It makes tension adjustments really simple. However, if you are looking for that warble sound that a lot of players like Satriani and Vai do....it will not do that. The springs are not long enough...but I believe that is what also adds to the tuning stability. As far as the height, that is really a setting on taste. I was just having this same convo with another person on youtube. He sent me his email and I sent him a pick of where mine sits in the body. His was seriously high. Tension is easy to set by turning the wheel in the back. If it is set correctly, you guitar should not go out of tune if you dive or pull up on the trem. Dive it all the was down and check your tuning. Tune it then pull it all the way up and check it again. That will let you know how to set the tension. Need anything else just let me know. thanks for the comment.

    Trace, hey I got a question if you won’t mind. some guys are fixing the intonation by tuning a string to its standard tuning and then checking the 12th fret for accuracy just like you did, then you adjust the saddle for the intonation adjust... Now how about if I tune a string to a lower reference note then check the 12th fret if it’s in the same tuning as its open note... tuning it to standard for the reference pitch before adjustment gives too much stress for the new strings in my opinion.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  4 роки тому

      You can set your strings to the tuning you want and then check the intonation. I have my guitars set down a half step and I set my necks for a half step. Generally I set my intonation to that tuning and it works just fine. I did this video to sit in with a band and they were in standard but I have already set this back down to Eb and reset the intonation at Eb. Granted you will want to use a heavier gauge string, but if the guitar is setup right you can tune it to about whatever you want and set it accordingly. The only issue you could run into is if you go down like two steps on the tuning, you would have to use a much heavier gauge string and it may buzz like hell because you are one a 25.5 scale guitar and those tunings are better at say a 27 scale guitar.

      I hate it when people do that because there is no reason and it does more damage than anything. What you can try is to get a bit for a drill and seat it into the head and pull the trigger full and sometimes the quick reaction from the drill will spin that out. You have to make sure that it is seated all the way into the head because if not it will strip that head out then you’re drilling it out and that becomes a problem. I’ve had to do it that way with a drill before and luckily it worked but you’re squeezing the trigger to full on it reacts very fast and sometimes will break that loose. If lubricants have not worked then dude you may have to pull the trem out and apply a little heat to it and that’s also not a good thing if avoidable

I bought this guitar used but it's in pristine shape, and this is the first time I've changed its strings. I have changed Floyd strings before though, so I'm not unfamiliar with the system. • @Guitars-GearandMusic

      Always answering question brother. Yeah these are a bitch sometimes. You have to get the string perfectly lined up with the saddle block which as you can see is very skinny. I mean it has to be dead freaking center or the sting will pop out every time. I have had my high E pop out several times so now I use a lot of light and a magnifying glass on the higher strings to make sure it is dead balls centered. It can be a pain. If you have it completely lined up and it is still popping out then you may have to replace the block. They can get deformed over time. You should be able to get those about anywhere. You can also try to just clip off the ball....not the extra winding because that gives you a much thicker piece of the string to put against the black. Don't hold me to this but I think you can also remove the block and the ball on the string, place it in pretty deep then slide the block back in. I have not tried this but every time I change my strings I keep meaning to do that because it looks like there is enough room in there.

But when I was teetering on the idea they had two in stock and when I called my guy up to order they had both sold. They had some on the way and I only had to wait like a week for it arrive. They sent me pictures of it and I pulled the trigger. All in all it’s a great guitar!

      If you just need to lower the bridge there are two screws that are the pivot points at the front. Where the trem floats against those two poles, that is how you adjust it. Each of those screws will have an Allen wrench. As you twist those in it will lower the bridge into the body. When I adjust my Trems I only adjust them quarter turns.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  2 роки тому +1

      First things first. Are the strings new? You cannot set intonation with old strings. If they are new it is possible to have a bad guitar string. Is this a new problem? If yes then it could simply be a bad string. If it is not a new problem then it could be the nut itself. The nut could be too high for that one string or not slotted correctly. Is it a locking nut? Also make sure your pickups are the correct distance from the strings. They should be 2mm to 3mm away to keep the magnets from pulling to hard.

    I mean the string holder blocks used to be in a certain position. A bit more towards bridge or neck. Now, they are all in a random position.
    Do you know how to set it up ?
    I saw that there is a certain tool we can use to adjust it.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Can you get it in tune or is it only out if you fret a chord. If it pulls out of tune when you fret then your intonation is out. I'm sure you know how to check but get the string in perfect tune, the fret at the 12th and check your tuner to see if flat or sharp. If you dismantled the blocks from the trem you will need to reset the intonation. Actually, I check my intonation everytime I change my strings because it can slip. Did you take the blocks out of the trem? you can use that tool to set the intonation. Makes it a little easier but I just do mine like in the vid. Loosen the string, adjust, tighten, retune. Also, did the tension on the trem change. That will kill your tune and you will never get it back in unless you reset the tension correctly. Let me know if this helps. If not there are other things to check but this is the obvious ones first.

  • @csmnu
    @csmnu Рік тому

    I tried restringing the same guitar, but I could never get it in tune. The edge term keeps rising as I tune the strings, putting the other strings out of tune and ultimately pulling the string out of whack. Needless to say I am a novice.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  Рік тому

      Ok. then your bridge is not set correctly. do what you need to get the guitar in perfect tune, then start to lower the rear of the bridge via the zps wheel on the back, retune and repeat. Keep doing this until you have the bridge exactly straight with the body and then tune it back up. That should take care of that issue. Granted it will rise again when you change the strings but the correct tension will put it right back into the correct place. Using a floating trem does take a little more work but well worth it once you get it all sorted out.

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  Рік тому

      If it is an Ibanez trem the strings must be in the dead center of the block, or maybe I should say blade. Especially on the high b and e string. When tightening them they have a tendency to slide to the side of the block (blade) and they will pop out every time. This is a little frustrating as I have had that issue a couple of times. Is it an Ibanez trem?

    • @Guitars-GearandMusic
      @Guitars-GearandMusic  Рік тому

      @@gusblackgroove899 If you have a string that keeps popping out even after that then you more than likely will need to replace the saddle. Luckily they are cheap, but first I would pull it out and check. The blade (block) of the saddle should be perfectly straight. It is hard to check because for whatever reason Ibanez makes that part of the block so freaking small but with such a small amount of area to pinch the string a little bit of damage will not let it hold correctly.

      Really? I have 4 Ibanez guitars with this bridge, or a low pro and I have never had a single issue out of any of them. Actually, in the 5 years I have been playing Ibanez guitars I have only broke one string. And if you are breaking the E and the A string there is something seriously wrong. I have never broken and E or A in my entire life. It is always the high E or the B. Floyds are good. I have a few of them also with 0 issues, they are just a little bulky it seems. But I have to ask.
