Part 8 of our 36 day Western America Motorcycle Tour.
Ride with us from Granby, Colorado through Rocky Mountain National Park to Estes Park on Highway 34, more often referred to as "Trail Ridge Road". 62 miles, with more then 8 miles above 11,000 feet. One of the best motorcycle roads in America.

We rode this road this July. We got sleet and freezing rain at 12,000. Still a very beautiful ride. This is also the highest continuous paved road in America.
I went through in 2000 and the gravel one lane road up to the visitors center was open. It was after labor day but it was warm and it was a great trip. I went through in a convertible that trip, my friend and I picked up her father in Fort Collins and he knew about the gravel road which was not well signed. We came in from Estes Park but the gate didn't mention that it was open, it is often closed because of slides. There are no cables or guards, or weren't then, so it is not for everyone. It was crowded because the road is extremely crooked and the traffic moves very slowly but it was worth it, you come in on the back side of the visitor's center.
my wife and i have made this trip countless times, a couple of times from the granby side and many times from ft collins to estes park and then up to alpine village.it's a cool ride and i never got tired of doing it.been 3 yrs since i've been there now.boy i miss it.
Dan: 2300 miles! Wow! Think about what a great ride it would be just getting to Colorado! Lots of scenery, history and great roads in between. Plan a route and make it happen.

I rode there, from British Columbia, about 1400 miles away from Colorado. 2 weeks from now puts you into late October, which means that Trail Ridge Road, and many of the other high mountain passes in Colorado are going to be closed for the winter. At that late date it is also going to be a very chilly ride anywhere in Colorado, New Mexico, and the Texas Panhandle. I would really suggest that you consider rides in this area for another year and aim for a time between June and late September.

We were dissapointed this year to find that Trail Ridge and Mt. Evans were closed the third week of June. Several of the passes we'd already been over had to be closed as well.
That would be really disappointing. It is the risk when you plan trips near the beginning or end of the season in these high mountain areas. Hopefully you salvaged the trip with some great riding at the lower elevations in the area. There are some really great secondary roads in that area!
@@RobertMerz Yes, we had already ridden the Telluride, Ouray, Silverton loop, Indepenence Pass, Leadville, and Lake City so we still considered it a successful trip. The evening we arrived in Kremmling where we were lodging, Rabbit Ears Pass got two feet of snow, and I believe some of the previously mentioned passes had to be closed again.

A spectacular route! I kept getting distracted, though, wondering about the purpose of the thousands of tall, skinny poles lining the road edges. Finally it hit me: When this road high in the mountains is buried under meters of snow, the poles guide the snowplow or snowcat drivers.
Perfect video to seal this route in the plans for this year's tour for us. Awesome!

My buddies and I ride out to Avon from St Louis every June and spend a week touring all over. Absolutely love those magical mountains! Thanks for sharing your ride, I have seen it a few time, this time I need to comment.
Sounds like a fun time, and a nice central location for exploring in all directions.When we were there we especially enjoyed riding Independence Pass, and the towns of Leadville and Fairplay, all to the south of Avon. I do have videos of a few of these rides on my channel.

This has to be one of the most beautiful scenic routes that I've every seen. It makes me miss Colorado even more than I do. I didn't get to see this part of Colorado when I lived there. Thanks for the video. Please share more.

Great video, I did this route this past summer it was great tho, wish the weather was better. When we left Gramby it was sunny and clear. By the time we got to the top though the temp had dropped 30 degrees and was raining! Good times... Ride safe

Hey that look so very much like it does in my home state of Idaho around the Hailey, Ketchum, Sun Valley area.
Idaho is a really beautiful place with some spectacular scenery. The area you mention, Craters of the Moon, Highway 75 and Highway 93 are some of our favorite riding roads. I do hope to have videos out on this area before summer, time permitting.
Funny you should mention Stanley Idaho today as that is the destination in the video I am editing today. My video though is from Ketchum to Stanley, then we continue on to Challis and Salmon, on the last couple days of a long trip as we headed home. We did the Lowman Loop from Stanley to Boise a couple years earlier, and you are right it is a must do, which means at some point I need to come back and record it. Idaho has a lot of good riding from what we have seen! I hope you will stay tuned and check out my Idaho videos coming out in May and June 2018.

Decent video. Music is too loud. Like to rev between shifts I guess...
I do prefer to match my engine revs to my road speed when I shift. It is an extra step that many people don't know how to do, or are just to lazy to do, but it greatly reduces drivetrain shock for those of us that like to care for our machinery.
when you start from Georgetown ,where do you sleep after this days ?
We spent the night in Golden, near Denver Co.
About how long did it take to ride this route with the stops? I am heading to Colorado with a group next June and I am trying to figure out a good "daily pace" with all the twisties. Is 250 per day too much?
A really hard question to answer, it all depends on your interests, the type of road, and the purpose of your ride. I know of people that will ride 400 to 500 miles a day, but there sole purpose for the journey is to ride. On the day that I recorded this video I rode about 120 miles. Trail Ridge Road is a lower speed limit, plus it is very scenic and warrants a few stops for me to take pictures and just enjoy.
If you travel the same way I do then perhaps 200 mile is a good average. That is about 4 hours of seat time on secondary highways when you take into consideration lower speed zones in populated areas, junctions, etc. Add a few stops of interest along the way, in my mind if there is nothing that requires a closer longer look I am probably on the wrong road, add another 1 1/2 hours (4 to 6 stops at 15 minutes each). Meals is another 2 1/2 hours if you are eating at a restaurant each time (3 times). Perhaps 1 longer stop every other day, such as an interesting museum, short hike, etc. with a duration of 2 hours. Another 1/2 hour is spent each morning packing, and again in the evening unpacking. When you add it all up it becomes a full day very quickly.
I would also suggest also to keep it flexible. You may plan on spending time somewhere based on what you have read or heard, and when you see it you decide that it really doesn't warrant the time you allocated. Move on and save that time for something unexpected that you encounter that is a little gem and you want to spend time on.

@@RobertMerz Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and your insight. I think we are pretty much on the same page with having some time to stop and enjoy the scenery. Out of 14 I only have 1 day over 250 (other than the freeway days across Nebraska out amd back) . But most are between 170- 230 so I think it will be good.
That sounds good. One other thing I generally do for my longer trips is plan a starting point where the trip actually begins, in your case from the sounds of things that might be Loveland CO. So to get to Loveland I would plan long days on the quickest routes possible and not allow any distractions from my goal. Starting at Loveland I would begin the much more relaxed attitude of the destination doesn't matter, the journey is the reason!

This is one of my earlier vids and I have learned a lot since then, I do hope you will check some of my more recent videos and see if they are more to your liking. I have done some with no music, and some with a lot less music. I look forward to you having a look at them and letting me know what you think.
