Does Pain Go Away With Awakening?

- A common misconception is that one does not feel pain when one is liberated from suffering. In this harrowing tale about a vomiting dog, a man, and a very bruised toe, we explore the nuances of pain, suffering, and resistance.

If it weren't for my severe chronic pain (mostly nerve pain) I wouldn't be "here" 🕳🤪. I'm grateful for all "my" suffering it is like paint splattered on a canvas in various ways throughout "my life" pointing to what needs to be seen and also a clear pointing to what "is" wholeness/completeness/unknowable silence/being. Blessings 💓🎨
So many blessings in disguise
Listening carefully - I’ve been in pretty severe chronic pain for about 6 or 7 years. Yet occasionally it seems to help my determination to rest within the body experience and rest within awareness and have a sense of noticing the movements of sensation within the body but also what seems to be coming from outside. On the ‘good’ days can inquire who am I where is this, is there an outside or inside or one unbroken awareness. The sitting with direct awareness without being drawn into a downward spiral of painful thought added to the sensation of pain is very difficult. Hard to articulate this.
This is so true what you say...chronic pain is no laughing matter...Yes very hard to not think about the pain since it is a daily occurrence it just takes over your whole experience... debilitating and no explanation needed for those of us that suffer with this. Take care
Can I pray for you?
@@konanerives1381 that would be nice...so kind of you... Thank you...sending love and peace to you

As a child I used to, and still do, have to get multiple pain shots at the dentist. Sometimes 6 or more, in order to numb my gums. Although I used to hate laughing gas as a child, because it smelled so awful, but now, as an adult, laughing gas mimics the feeling of being "awakened" where everything is joyously okay.
subtle flavours of pain.

Love it 😂
Your t-shirts take the pain away. Love them.
😃
Resistance seems to be the problem. The self just can't seem to help but resist pain .When pain happens here, (words can't really grasp this) it is both more painful and all encompassing and also like being held in loving arms. The resistance to pain seems to make it worse.
I agree
Would love for you to talk more about living with chronic pain and how to avoid getting stuck there on the awakening journey. (Beginner here)

Laughing can be the ego too. In 2006, I attended Debbie Ford's Shadow Work Process. It's a long story but on the second day, on two occasions (morning and afternoon) 3 different set of people sit opposite of you. The second set are telling you "positive" words. One word in particular, I just started laughing hysterically; actually surprised me. I even caught the audible attention of a couple distant assistant advocates. lol They came over and told the 3 people to keep repeating until I stopped laughing. I'll n-e-v-e-r forget the experience
The notion of no suffering due to a lack of response doesn't necessarily equate "healthy." I lost part of my finger in the early 90s. During those years, I was 'numb' in general so I just let the pain be as it is, pulling up my big girl pants. I know my body's response now would be greater due to being authentic unlike my lack of emotion childhood
Thanks for sharing. Yeah I wouldn’t equate non-suffering with lack of response. Quite the opposite with equanimity, one easily and seamlessly responds to the environment. If something dangerous is coming your way you will move out of the way, respond appropriately, not hesitate. The key difference, and this makes all the difference experientially, is there’s no internal response saying, “it shouldn’t be this way,” nor is there internal recoil or going into the mind to escape. No contraction afterward or replaying in the mind of what should have happened or what could have happened. Experiences are let go of naturally. The sense of needing to escape life and all of its textures is gone. It’s deeply peaceful.
God bless you
Thank you for sharing your experience about your toe. I recently had knee surgery to repair a fractured tibia in the knee area. The 2 nights after surgery was the most agonizing painful experience I ever had, but I steadfully maintained while internally looking into the pain itself (this is powerful) and asking my self, "what is this pain if the mind does not experience it?" where does the sensation come from?" "who is really sensing the pain, if mind cannot experience any pain?" "Can the word 'pain' on paper experience the pain?" "What is pain if thoughts cannot experience it?" "Who is really experiecing the pain where there is no experiencer?" The more I did self-inquires into the pain itself, the more it begins to subside. Did it go away immediately? No it didn't. One thing I did most of the time was to notice that consciousness or awareness was never touched by the pain. Thank you for your previous videos where you mentioned to "look into the pain, fear or emotion, etc." It was interesting to see the pain itself does not affect the consciousness or awareness or the I-ness (beingness). Pain and suffering arise from knowledge. Prior to knowledge, there is no pain or suffering. So in other words, the body is somewhat connected to the knowledge (mind). If you had total amnesia (you do not know who you are), does your body disappear? Of course not. Did Buddha ever inquire as to why we have bodies? 😀Thank you.
Thx for your comments
As far as suffering caused by "mind" through meditation, presence, awareness, shadow work I am pretty much in a state of stillness, calm in all experiencing....as you mentioned it does not make the pain go away but there is a sense of acceptance now which does help...before I was angry frustrated resistant which only causes the situation to be worse
Indeed :)
Actually I've found that at times the pain is worse. What changes is how we experience the pain if the work is done correctly within. There is a place we can journey to in pain that leads to a situation in which pain is befriended despite feeling as an attack. It's wonderful. No more need for tylenol, ibuprofen or worse substances to "control" it.
Well said
OMG this is perfect!!!! I got home today and my 19 yo son was hiding in the cubby to scare me. Boy did I scream!!! I dropped my packages and even peed myself. if this was a few years ago I might have gotten extremely angry. I just laughed. He got me good. It was funny. I love him. That little shit is in trouble for when I figure a way to scare him back ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ open to ideas😛😛😝. Feeling blessed
wonderful... and funny :)))
Wake him up with a horn or ice bucket 🪣😂
Buddha, around the end of his life, got chronic back pain and used meditation to escape to Samadhi. This is a written record and complies with my experience as well. During meditation, as my attention goes back to pure awareness, I notice that physical pain subsides. I don’t know why but that’s my experience.
indeed he described it as an being like on old cart breaking down I think :)
This is a great talk. Much bigger than the title. Pointing out that our worry about the pain creating disability or missing out on experiences actually promotes the pain as misery as opposed to just...pain
yes!
Reminds me of when a ligament of my knee went out while outside doing construction type stuff. There was pain, then the inability to walk. Clear understanding that i need to get away so i don't jeopardize the other workers (still no self directed thoughts). Managed to jump into some cover, then it started to rain like it hasn't rained in years. Everyone gathered under the side of a building, still soaked wet, but i kinda laughed at the situation. There was ongoing acceptance and no suffering. This kind of stuff is when you really notice if your practice has paid off, or what your level of realization truly is. I think it's valuable to share it so it's not esoteric bullshit.
oh, I love it :)))
I was sure you were going to say you slipped in the dog vomit.Still we can all relate to slamming our toes into something.
That would have made the story even better
I am a dentist. I can tell you that a inferior alveolar nerve block is the hardest anesthesia to properly execute in the mouth. I think the stats show around 50% of attempts do not achieve a full block.
Another beautiful description. Thank you.
!!!! My dentist told me the same when I told him the story. It's great to find a good dentist who can explain details clearly and knows his/her stuff
Thanks 🙏 Enjoy these insights ❤️
Very interesting 🧐
Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure!
Great stories to make the point. Always nice to make it a bit "personal". The toe pic was grand; looked a bit like my pinkie toe after it got stamped on with cleats during football game in high school.

Speaking of dogs...do you think animals and plants experience unfiltered reality? Thanks!
I do yes. Tho knowingly experiencing unfiltered reality I think is pretty unique to humans
This is interesting, I particitpate in MMA and so have an interesting relationship and lots of experience with physical "pain". In my experience there's isn't much difference between pain and other sensations and can actually be very interesting and ... enjoyable? At least as much as any other sensation. If attention is completely directed to the pain fully without the ego-fear response it has a very similar signature to any sensation or thought in that it seems to fade out the closer you look at it.
Yes! Very interesting indeed when we start investigating the overlay of preference and reaction that "colors" our physical experience. Thanks for the comment
😱🙈🙈 that picture
Lost in translation - The word "satan" in the bible actually is the hebrew word for resistance but that word was kept untranslated for some reason. And "amen" is hebrew and translates "so it is".
interesting!
Aarrgh! Appointment with dentist next week for extraction and implant. Same place that had half a dozen numbing shots because the nerve is in a different place. I am NOT advanced enough to not be major stressing.
May or may not be helpful but I do know in the lower jaw sometimes there is an accessory nerve that comes from the anterior mandible that can be blocked as well in these cases. An endontist told me that.
@@SimplyAlwaysAwake - thanks. Hope my dentist knows. I wish they would just put me under like veterinarians do.

This is perfect timing, we just had a storm roll through and my allergies are going nuts. I'm being propped up with antihistamine and pain killers right now. Damn it Texas pollen.
I'm only saying this 'cause you're in the beef capital of the world, but when I switched to a carnivore diet several years ago, my seasonal allergies disappeared. In fact, I doubt I would have made such a drastic change if hadn't been all hopped up on allergy meds at the time. 😜
I get them too
interesting :)
@@SarahDale111 I'm doing the exact opposite, I have been eating vegan for about 18 months now; for environmental and heart health reasons.
However, I have noticed my allergies getting worse, so maybe the lack of animal products in my body is causing the problem. That's okay it's only pain.
@@smartsuka Is "Vegan Texan" an oxymoron? (I jest.) Could be not the lack of animal products, but the presence of certain plant matter that the body has a sensitivity to. I was vegetarian for 40 years, and only now do I finally feel healthy and strong. When I realized I wasn't ever going to die of scurvey, it felt like I'd been fed a bunch of lies all my life. I don't know why eating, of all things, had to become such a complicated, divisive issue. I guess we live in a world where entropy reigns supreme. I wish you well!

As far as i know, "the end of suffering", in Buddhist context, is not the end of illusion of self, but rather, the end of the cycle of birth and death...❤️🙏🌈
Well one can certainly end suffering in this life before physical death. It's experiential not conceptual or doctrinal.
As far is doctrine goes no-self (anatta) is one of the dharma seals, "All phenomena are empty and devoid of self." If you discount mahayana buddhism, the Buddha did say several hundred times in the suttas of the Pali canon that you will not find a self no matter where or how you look. Also in the Bahiya Sutta Buddha states:
"When, Bahiya, for you in the seen is merely what is seen... in the cognized is merely what is cognized, then, Bahiya, you will not be 'with that.' When, Bahiya, you are not 'with that,' then, Bahiya, you will not be 'in that.' When, Bahiya, you are not 'in that,' then, Bahiya, you will be neither here nor beyond nor in between the two. Just this is the end of suffering."
This is clear description of non-duality and no-self. These could be said to correspond to breaking the seventh and eighth fetters.
@@SimplyAlwaysAwake i guess you are right...and absence of self is definitely the crux of Buddha's teaching...❤️... it's just that the end of suffering entails COMPLETE end to delusion of self... (What does "complete" means...??...to be honest... having had many irriversible, so called profound, total moment to moment life changing, non dual shifts, yet having come from Buddhist practice background, I can't help feeling that non dual speakers look into reality equipped with x2 magnifying glass... while Buddhist method is describing the view of reality through an electronic microscope, that the purified mind has become...
Yes...the wonderful power of non dual shifts, even if it is (perhaps) less "deep"is in its effectiveness in eliminating/reducing daily suffering...
So...i am left wondering... finding anchor only in, moment to moment, "not knowing"...)
Bhikku Bodhi has an interesting article about Buddhism and non duality that i can send you, if it sounds interesting...❤️🙏
Nerve block for lateral phalanges, STAT!
Damn right!
Extra question: why are we not all liberated already?
well liberation is already the case, there is just some sense of a separate you that thinks it sounds really cool and chases it with thought ;:0
Yes, the body exists. We have several evolutionary senses that increases our odds of survival and reproduction. Nerve endings, to experience pain, are in abundance. Sometimes I desire an on/off switch. LOL 😝
true that!
Hi Angelo, i have a question. I want to try some psychedelics for fun but could psychedelics turn back the dmn and make your mind chaotic again? Please respond :)
Can't really comment on that, you'll have to use your judgement. However as this channel is geared toward awakening, I have to tell you you don't need psychedelics to wake up and keep waking up.
I was gonna try xtc but many have reported that the suffering came back after trying it so im really scared lol
How was the dog?
Did Ramana maharshi had pain while he was dying?
Don't know. Videos of him with advanced arthritis walking around stiff with walking stick would suggest he did. Looked like pain to me.
dunno about ramana, but a story about nisargadatta - he was supposedly asked near the end of his life (dying of cancer) if he was in pain. his answer was:“i am the pain.”
