3... I wasn't asking too many things. He got carried away and swept me along. The whole time I tried staying grounded and he stressed HIMSELF out. All I asked for was honesty and a consistent pattern (1x a week or 1x every 2 weeke meet up). We had one argument and he couldn't handle it.

For all piles 1,2, 3 .. Ghosting is awful and cruel and the great creation of social media. People who do this are true cowards and don’t care about us really at any capacity. I don’t care anymore about their issues, I’m starting to not care myself and if they come back or not anymore is the best thing. , shame on me for being kind and giving. I won’t be respond as now I’m the ghost that haunts their thoughts. These people don’t deserve an ounce of our attention! Break the cycle and let them go ..

Pile 2. The way I devastated his fragile ego was not any kind of attack. I had to cancel our last two visits. We live in different states. I visit him every couple of months during a business trip. I had to cancel the first time because my brother tested positive for COVID and I had just seen him the day before he tested positive. The second time, I hurt my back and couldn’t travel. I guess he took it personally.

I have explained to him why this connection is so heavy for me, what I'm working through and why his behavior is so triggering for me. I told him that the way things are, the fact that he wants me close but not too close, makes me distrust him. Ultimately, it makes me want to pull away from him.
He has been open about being scared of loneliness, which I think is why he keeps pursuing connections. But at the same time he admits that true commitment terrifies him. He is afraid that he will lose his freedom and he is scared of never fully being accepted for who he is. Overall I think that he's still very unsure about what he wants, making it impossible to meet anyone's needs or expectations.
After that conversation I took a few weeks for myself. Our connection was very intense for almost two years and honestly, I think he needed the break as much as I did. We had some contact after that, but it was clear that I wasn't settling for how things had been before. What ultimately changed things for me is that I was willing to be honest and vulnerable with him and he acknowledged that he consciously kept what he thought and felt to himself (and would continue to due so to avoid getting hurt).
That wasn't working for me. Either we were going to be completely honest, or I was letting go. Things quickly fizzled out after that without another word. Everything was fine, nothing dramatic happened, no arguments. It was just gone. It was confusing at first, but I let it be. No matter how connected I still feel to him on a soul level (and I do believe he feels that too), that doesn't change the fact that this is who he is at this point in his life and that he has very little to offer me at this time.
