    This guy was a solid player! After hearing this, I'm in love with bass even more!

    Peeling the layers of this song into the bass line reveals how crucial this groove is to making it a mega sized hit. What a GROOVE

    One day I held that Rickenbacker in my hands! In backstage after show in Bad Bruckenau, Germany 2006. Thank to Micky Lee Soul, RG's tech who allowed me touch history!

      Roger still ocassionaly uses that Rickenbacker for Smoke On The Water instead of his usual Vigier. I saw DP live 20x times and for the first time when I experinced him performing it with Rickenbacker instead of Vigier, it knocked my socks off! What a SOUND!!!! Sound engineer brought up his bass sound up front (almost like in this separate rhytm section vid) and it was just absolutely different take of Smoke than ever before.

    This the most outstanding 'isolated bass and drums' stuff! Perfect combination of the best bass line in the rock music history and the best rock drummer of all time!

    This is what keeps the music together, if the timing is off either way the song will never be the same I love them drums and bass!

    I have been listening to this song for almost 50 years, but who know that's what Glover was playing from 3.03 to 3.36? Amazing.

    Every great song has a great foundation, Paice and the great Roger Glover are superb brick masons. I never could quite get the exact notes of the bridge, it's got a little more than a natural minor scale. Thanks for posting, off to transcribe!

    God damn it. I love the guitar and I love practicing it but songs with bass lines like these make me want to throw the guitar out the windows and just pick up a bass.

    When I first started playing bass, my friends would ask me if I can play Smoke on the Water. They obviously were thinking of the simple guitar riff, not these complex bass patterns. After eight years of playing I still haven't learned this song properly all the way through.

    • @haagholm

      With a rickenbacker bass,a fresh set of flatwounds and a tubeamp you'll come pretty close

    • @SparklingRathian
      @SparklingRathian 7 років тому

      A pick or some hard skin on your fingers will help a lot also ;) And for the G during the main riff, bump your finger on the fret (don't know if I'm clear...)

    • @Adrian-dl9nb
      @Adrian-dl9nb 7 років тому

      But today's flatwounds don't sound like this, do they?

    • @kennet7837

      Hans Åge Holmen This is too bright to be flatwounds.

    can you get that tone using a fender p bass and an overdrive pedal? I'm a 12 yr old bass player so I don't know. I don't think the precision bass would be able to get it since it has two pickups wired together making only pickup, but I think the pedal might help

    • @bassist12345
      @bassist12345 8 років тому +5

      If you had a bass d.i./preamp pedal like a Sansamp, or an MXR M80, and used a little bit of the drive and played with a pick, I bet you could get pretty close, although you're right, I don't think you'll get this exact tone with a P-Bass. The p-bass with overdrive and a pick is one of the best bass tones around though! I hope you find the sound you're looking for!

      +Gabrijel Prusina Hi. Sorry, it's been a long time since i've been back on here. I think I could grab the vocal only track(s) from the MOGG file. If I do I'll let you know.

    Can you please give me information about the program used to isolate instruments?

    • @danielvestman2104
      @danielvestman2104 9 років тому +3

      +Covanegra If you really want to isolate the bass track, you need access to the original recordings, if they still exist. Some separated tracks have also been lifted from games like Guitarhero (where they often use the original tracks). If you can't find a separated track for the tune you want on youtube, I suggest you just use an equalizer to filter out the treble and meddle so it's easier to hear the bass.

    • @FoolFaces

      +Covanegra These were just the Rock Band and Guitar Hero MOGG files.

    Roger is a little underrated because of that poor sound at the records! He deserved a sound like JPJ in LedZep2!
