She sent her out to make money for herself and live a good life. Not for the family but for Fancy. Because she said in the song when she left that was te last time she seen her mother and she never looked back.
@Elizabeth Stanford, you don't listen, do you? I'm all for interpolating songs to fit one's life/needs, but if you're not going to listen to anything but the chorus in a Reba McEntire song, don't come cryin' to us when we all blast you for not having a clue about the rest of the story. Mama: "I'm real sick and the baby's gonna starve. If you want OUT, it's up to you." Fancy: "Well, that was the LAST time I saw my mama," etc. Listen to the damned verses, please and thank you, so the rest of us don't have to waste time schooling you. More importantly, it's an insult to Reba's story-telling. Please try again.
The mother had to do something because welfare assistance stop paying when a child turns 18, which is why they took the baby (to put it in the foster system) as the mother was sick and eventually died. Of course, Fancy didn't understand but soon did. So yes, her mother pushed her towards the oldest profession but if Fancy did right, she'd be OK. Which is why at the end Fancy says to her mother 'I understand' why she did what she had to do.

Man, I saw Reba live in concert at Arco Arena as a teen, had Gold Circle seats, third row... she started the concert with this song, was fucking amazing. It started with the cameras up top showing her in the cab talking to the driver, then suddenly the cab came out on stage and she stepped out in that thick fur coat. She was singing and then when it got to the chorus she opened the fur coat and dropped it and this amazing red sequin gown burst into blue lightning with the lighting behind her. I could see up on the screens that those closer had to use since they werent close enough to see for themselves, but I shit you not bro it was just a bit sparkly on the screen, but up close IRL it looked like she was bathing in blue lightning, just like it was electricity flowing around her entire body. Was fucking glorious. Her and Linda Davis came out over my head later in the concert singing the battle part of Does He Love you. I could have reached up and touched her feet.
Back in the day MTV and CMT used to actually be music channels. Where all they did was music videos, and shows/interviews with musicians. So, they made a lot of videos with a minute or two intros.
I've seen Reba 6 times in concert! When she did this song... She had on an overcoat when she came out... Just like in the video... Then when she started talking about the red velvet dress and got to the chorus... The long gorgeous red velvet dress just fell out of the coat when she took it off. before you could see her legs in the coat you could not see the dress at all! It was really very dramatic. She puts on a very good concert completely worth the money. Now... if you haven't already... I request that you go listen to Vince Gill and Patty Loveless at George Jones funeral (look for this live performance). The song is called "Go rest high on the mountain'. Vince Gill wrote the song for his brother when he died. He and Patty loveless were very good friends of George Jones and they sang it in his tribute. If you've not checked out George Jones yet, there are so many good George Jones songs but one of his big ones is "He stopped Loving her Today". A few personal favorites of mine from George Jones are "Who's going to fill their shoes", "I don't need no rocking chair", "The Corvette Song". There are so many more that I could go on and on! George Jones was the Bad Boy of Country music back in the 1960's. He earned the reputation of "No Show Jones". Because he often would go off with the club owners or someone and go party and not show up for his concerts. My Mom said that people would go not knowing if he would show up or not.... But weather he did or didn't... Everybody still loved him. Booze, drugs and wild ways were just apart of who George Jones was during that time. He married Tammy Wynette (ya need to check her out too.. "Stand By Your Man") and they have a daughter named Georgette. Tammy couldn't tame George and they ended up getting a divorce ironically it was after the song came out stand by Your Man. George got remarried and his new wife Nancy was able to calm his butt down. George got clean and sober and he made some fantastic records. You got to check him out. God rest his soul.
Appreciate your enthusiasm, man! This is such a controversial yet inspiring song. I've never heard anyone cover it, and who could do it better than Reba? Gives me chills whenever I hear her sing the line where she determines to overcome her situation: " you know I might've been born just plain white trash, but Fancy was my name." Amazing.
That’s awesome I didn’t notice that sign before you bringing it out, it is the first time I’ve noticed it. And at the bottom it says: “To Thine own South Be True” which is what her mom had engraved on that locket that she had given her.😭
This was sung originally by Bobbie Gentry (1970) - with apologies to Ms. Gentry, I like Reba's version more. Another great country cover song is "Home Free w/Maggie Baugh: Delta Dawn" - it's a live video that I think you'd enjoy. Love from Canada.
I think you missed the fact that Fancy wasn't just pouring tea. Her mom sent her out to turn tricks.. That's why she said people criticize momma for turning me out no matter how little we had. Lol
Lmao the contrast between your Cypher Verse and this song ain't lost here 😂 but no joke i appreciate you being a real dude and reacting to songs I grew up on for real! Us country folks can write a story on our lives! No capping down here
Three of the artists you mentioned are from my great state of Oklahoma! Reba, and Blake! and a whole lot more country artists as well. But, you've got good taste. HAHA
I had to have open heart surgery and stayed at Reba's Ranch House which is a place sort of like Ronald McDonald House for patients and family members to wait while patients are recovering. It is free of charge and was donated by Reba. Love her.
Try some Marty Robbins, before you pick your favorite 3 or 5. I guarantee you will change your mind. You have to go back before the 1980's, at least. Besides, you will love the experience, if you pick the right songs. So far, so good on picking Reba with anything, but you should hear the original by Bobbie Gentry. She didn't do too many, before she retired. She wrote 'Ode To Billy Joe' herself and maybe did a few that didn't get too high on the charts. Kitty Wells only had one or two, but us old timers do remember her. Johnny Horton was a history class in every song. You will love him! He just died too soon. Good luck and God bless you, sir!
Reba does good story songs. One if my favorite is called BOBBY on her For My Broken Heart album. Would have been a great hit for her. So inspiring about true love for family
I love Reba McIntyre. Marina McBride is also worth listening to. Martina has one of the most powerful voices in country music with songs like “Independence Day” and “A Broken Wing”.
Top 3 is always changing except #1 is always The Dance by Garth Brooks. Then my 2 and 3 at least as of today is #2 Believe by Brooks and Dunn and #3 Smoke Rings in the Dark by Gary Allan
Need more Reba? The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia is great!

BEST reaction to this song by far!!!
Lori Morgan is another queen of country you should do her song "Something in Red"
And what part of no
Lorrie Morgan is one of my favorites of all time along with Reba.
I love that song
Not a Lori Morgan fan. Love Reba
Whoevers In New England is great
Just found you today! Enjoyed this a lot! Cant wait for more!
Really has a beautiful voice brilliant breakdown thanks so much love an god bless x
While you're doing Country Queens dont forget Pam Tillis, Lori Morgan, Tricia Yearwood and Faith Hill
@@alariepflieger yes of course! As well as Loretta and Patsy too.
LeAnn Rimes and you can’t forget Shania
HAHA
Reba is my favorite and the Queen of Country, any song of hers is the best
Awesome reaction! ❤
You know I had to be first for this one! Glad you finally listened to this one!
Reba is 👑 of COUNTRY. Every song she has. That voice 🔥🔥🔥
I had to have open heart surgery and stayed at Reba's Ranch House which is a place sort of like Ronald McDonald House for patients and family members to wait while patients are recovering. It is free of charge and was donated by Reba. Love her.
Night that the lights went out in Ga. The Video 💯❤️
My top 3. Garth Brooks-Thunder Rolls, Luke Combs-Better Together, Chris Stapleton-Tennessee Whiskey
If your digging Reba, might I suggest "It's Your Call"? Beautiful song and stunning music video ❤
Greatest country song ever: George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Every country artist will tell you that he is the man and that is "the" song.
Check out does he love you like he loves me that's Miss Reba and Linda Davis but she actually does the duet with other singers now too
Reba does good story songs. One if my favorite is called BOBBY on her For My Broken Heart album. Would have been a great hit for her. So inspiring about true love for family
Reba has bars.
Lights went out in Georgia
I love Reba McIntyre.
Marina McBride is also worth listening to. Martina has one of the most powerful voices in country music with songs like “Independence Day” and “A Broken Wing”.
Top 3 is always changing except #1 is always The Dance by Garth Brooks. Then my 2 and 3 at least as of today is #2 Believe by Brooks and Dunn and #3 Smoke Rings in the Dark by Gary Allan
GREAT REACTION!!!
Your reaction was hilarious, thank you.
You should check out "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia"!! That's another "GREAT" Reba song!!
Reba is the absolute queen!!
