The album they were working on here received a 2023 Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Although it didn't win, the nomination was a real honor.
As a soundman it must be nice to work with people like PTX who not only understand what you are asking for, but are completely and totally invested in every part of the process. They're not watching the clock, complaining, and wanting to go home. They are in it to make something special every single song.
This goes to show what a tight-knit group they are and what perfectionists as well...and are still great friends with each other. Glad you understood far more than us who aren't even remotely in the music industry and gave us some extra insight to the things we're seeing in the video.
Great reaction! Thank you! Ben Bramm, the engineer/co-producer, is definitely their secret weapon, yet I feel like ALL of them are producing their records!
Fun fact: Mitch, Scott and Kirstie have been singing since elementary school. They added bass and beatboxing for their audition and eventual winning of The Sing Off.
Ben Bram is called Pentatonix's sixth member. Helps with arrangements and has produced or co-produced many of the their albums. Ben graduated from USC the year before Scott enrolled, and had put together an all-star a capella group to compete on season 2 of the SingOff. Scott talked to him about Scott, Kirstie and Mitch going on the show and Ben helped them find Avi and Kevin. The SingOff producers had been impressed with Ben's knowledge of a cappella singing and his arranging skills and had hired him to be on the support staff for season 3, Pentatonix's season. When they won the show, Ben continued helping them with arrangements and some of the early tours. When arranging a song, Pentatonix works out a basic arrangement together, records it and sends it to Ben, who suggests changes and eventually creates sheet music. Then the members usually record their parts separately.
Sorrry but Ben had noting to do with finding Kevin or Avi. Scott located Avi when discussing the situation with a friend, the friend said he knew a super great Bass singer that might be interested. Then just a week before the deadline, out of frustration Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch got on UA-cam and typed in Beatboxer, and Kevin was the first video to pop up. That is what I heard Scott tell during a couple interviews. Although Ben has been very involved with almost every other aspect of their lives and careers.
@@w.sommen5209 Different Ben ;-) There's 2 of them in the family now!! Ben, K's fiancé is their video Grapher... he did this video and basically every other video of them you see.
It’s always wonderful to hear from experts, so thanks for taking us with you as you watched their mini-doc. I’m always amazed at the Over the River part where they repeat and refine the background vocals - that’s dedication to perfection. And the percussion, that’s way interesting how they develop that. Hello. Thanks for an informative reaction. Since you know music I really think you will love their cover of Kiera’s “Gold” It’s a masterclass in timing , harmonies and Mitch is well he’s Mitch. It’s recorded live
I loved watching your reaction to this video! I wasn't disappointed in seeing your interest in the creativity and engineering work that goes into their recordings! Every member of Pentatonix is essential, and that most definitely includes Ben Bram!
They really have gifted masters behind the scenes! Not only are they matched in the heavens vocally but their coaches, engineers, directors, mixers.....on and on are so talented. How amazing is that?
I had a feeling you'd enjoy this! It's so inspiring. Both in what they do technically, with how different they are musically (the body percussion part!!). But also in how they interact. Bouncing ideas, communicating in a kind way, even a small thing like Kevin, the beatboxer, thinking a track didn't need beatboxing. There is a reason they've stuck together for like 12 years with only one change and largely the same people around them. It seem like they produce a very nice work enviroment, and THAT is sometimes harder to find than talent. Them having both of it is just lovely
I could watch this all day. I'd pay to just sit there for the entire recording of an album and marvel the creative synergy. What a miracle these five people make music together for our ears. It's also nice to see Ben Bram in action, there. He was the one at the piano. He's been a collaborator on many of their arrangements since the Sing Off, and really encouraged Scott to put together a group to audition for the show to begin with and helped develop their signature sound.
I found it so interesting to watch them learn and record (in real time), a song from the 1940's. "Its Been A Long Time" was originally a song written to welcome home our soldiers from World War II. It's a totally different era and style of music and they internalized the essence of the piece and recreated it beautifully for this generation! Really well done! =)
The short guy with the glasses, brown beard and hair is Ben Bram, both their arranger and (in this case) one of their recording engineers. Ben has been with them since their Sing-Off days. Mitch is looking tired and distracted through this because his solo EP was dropping that week (for his side project Messer), but once he opens his mouth, he's all business. (Well, except for that one screech in the "overs" for Over the River ... 😆). You saw how many times they tried that phrase and in how many different ways: they are SUCH perfectionists. And how much input Kevin and Matt had, even though they weren't singing on that part! You should check out that video, BTW - it features Lindsey Stirling, whom you saw in Papatouai.
I love this video because it not only shows their collaboration and creativity, but also shows that they are the real deal. Of course their albums have production, reverb, etc applied, but it starts with just 5 very talented people. They are the real deal.
So glad you enjoyed this. It certainly gives a great insight into who they are and how they work together. Your thoughts and reactions were great. Thanks so much for watching it. Ready for the next one. To see some of their magic I would suggest their cover of "Gold" by Kiara and "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy".
The Videographer/Director for this video is Ben Hausdorff. He’s Kirstin’s fiancé and father of their daughter, Elliana. You can see how harmonious they are both professionally and personally. Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin have been singing together for half of their lives. The band has their own special synergy.
I like these kinds of videos. Most of the public don't realize how much work goes into the making of a song, whether it's vocals or instrumentals and the whole nine yards that goes into the whole song. Musicians work harder than most people realize. Sure, talent goes a long way, but there's a lot of work that goes in behind the scenes. I guess that's why I appreciate musicians so much.
At about 2:15 in your video - that is Ben Bram who is their producer (in collaboration with the members themselves). He is often cited at the "Sixth Member"
They are all so talented & as you watch the sing off you’ll really see how well they work together. They are better in person than on a recording honestly! So you’re well on your way to having hit all the main steps of their journey and watching their sing off performances is so necessary imo to get a real feel & understanding of who they are and where they came from…they were babies! There’s a collab between them & Lindsey Sterling Over the River I think it’s called….but it’s an awesome upgrade to an old Christmas standard. Their collab with Dolly Parton is really good as well. And if you want to hear Mitch go for days without breathing, their cover of Can you feel the love tonight is gorgeous. Sing is fun as well! Then! Super fruit is the duo of Mitch and Scott and Rise is absolutely stunning. The Promise is also a favorite. And their covers from Wicked! Then Mitch’s solo stuff….particularly his cover of Billie Eillish’s song Your Power… I listen to that on repeat it’s so good. He also performs under the title Messer and those are all a different vibe but really good. Kevin has some great cello boxing stuff out and Kirsten has a couple solo songs that are more pop but fun! Scott has a great song Mars out that really showcases his voice and Avis solo stuff is allgreat imo. Matt doesn’t have as much out there yet but I’m sure he will! Another couple artists with insane vocals and voice control are Adam Lambert and his cover of Chers Do you believe in life after love … Brian Crumps covers of Creep and Man in the mirror…Future Sunsets/David Micheal Franks cover of Skyscraper and Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance w Somebody in a minor key and then Eva Cassidy’s version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow….all worth a listen!
Your reaction to this is BY FAR my most favorite. I rewatch this constantly. You need to see the over the River finished video as well as making Christmas (from the Nightmare Before Christmas), the Grinch, Joyful Jouful, Jolene, sound of silence, the prayer, oh come all ye faithful, dance of the sugar plum fairies. They have made so much incredible music that is completely mind blowing.
I love the way you explain what is happening. I have been wondering how they got so coordinated and who the people behind the scenes were that produced the fabulous effects produced by this group. Their voices are the paint and they are used to create the musical pictures we love so much.💗
One of the most interesting videos they've ever put out. It's really wonderful to see the creative process in action. I have yet another layer of respect for Pentatonix. I've been a Pentaholic since 2012. Can't believe it! P.S. - Thank you!
I just love and respect the fact the fact that they all can give their opinions and no one is upset and they appreciate each other and that's why they make this so awesome music it is truly a collaboration of all five
Having a professional discuss and explain makes it even more appealing. Thank you so much for your expertise. FYI, their arranger/producer Ben Bram has been with the band since 2011.

A person who puts the hours in to reach their goals will reach them. That studio is 10+ years of success. When you check them out from their beginnings after the Sing Off, you can see the difference, lol. Their first Grammy was at the cost of $400 (Daft Punk). Great reaction.
Yep, they've done their fair share of lugging generators in the forest for music videos, grinding, rehearsing on airport floors etc. This is them over a decade in the business!
I love watching them composing their magic. Like you said, they get just as blown away at themselves as we do of them. I believe this was their first time back in the studio together after Covid lockdown. I know there is a video of them on tour with this album. They show behind the scenes, them being themselves. Clips from the VIP sessions and some of each location. They end in Scott, Mitch and Kirsten’s hometown. It’s well worth the watch!!! Loved your reaction and appreciation of the work that goes into their albums. It lets us non musical people learn a bit about what it takes. Thanks
Did you notice that when they were listening to the Prayer, Scott held out his arms to show his goosebumps? When this video started, they had 2 weeks to arrange and record 10 songs 😵😵💫 . If I heard right they bought an old house somewhere around L.A. (built in the 1920's), and converted the ballroom into the recording studio. The rest of the house is the management office.Don't know if you noticed, but I heard that Kevin, the beatboxer has as much control over and does as much for the arrangements as the arranger does. Strange thing I think is that Kevin records the beatbox last. I've always understood percussion was recorded first so that the singer can use it to keep time. But what do I know??? LOL @wolliofficial maybe you can correct me on that.
The thing is they start playing around with different noises that they have made, often made by mistake, that just kind of sounding interesting. and when the others make those sound for Kevin, he just digest them and turns out magic of beatboxing that is so ingenious that you wonder why it is possible to do that. Kevin makes use of mikes inside of his clothing(in the 1970's we called those plate mikes) to make it possible to amplify the different noises to be part of the sound. They seem to work very well for him.
I think you should react to the official video Over The River from the Evergreen album. Hear how amazing the final cut was. And the video is awesome too. I really enjoyed your reaction!
I remember another reviewer pointing out that when Scott took over the bass, he dropped his chin to his chest to shorten his vocal chords. So your comment about stance makes sense.
Loved this reaction and all your insight. I always think they’re amazing but seeing someone in the studio art appreciating them is even better! I agree with a previous comment… I’d be interested in your thoughts of them rapping, react to their covers of Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Us and Ariana Grande’s Problem
I should be asleep right now but when I noticed you had done this. Im so glad you did it and i love the extra facts you were able to enllighten us with. Ed Boyer who does all of their. mixibg was already on thd sing off working on it and recommended Ben Bram to be an arranger for the groups I think he started season 2 and told Scott he should do it. He, Mitch and Kirstin did accapella in high school. There are a lot more detaila about how kevin almost didnt end up doing it bc he was graduating from Yale with a degree in Eastern Asian Studies as well as pre med. If you want me to fill in the rest just let me know. I must geet to sleep now bc my mon is coning hone from the hospital in the morning so i have to get up early. Ill binge your other reactions tonorrow. Thanks again for doing it and all the facts you imparted.❤

So glad you enjoyed this one. I loved everything that you were able to share! Thanks so much for a great reaction & keep em coming! So happy I found ur channel.
I enjoyed your reaction to this very interesting Pentatonix video. It was great to hear your perspective as a professional. I love watching them interact as they put the album together. Everyone contributed and all opinions were respected. Their voices are amazing so it's no surprise that they sound so awesome during live performances.
I love their album, Evergreen. It's a Christmas album, but I'll listen to it any time of year. Some of the songs aren't necessarily just for Christmas. River is one of my favorites on the album.
Hi Wolli, i just discovered you today reviewing PTX's rendition of a Kiss from a Rose. I love your cool laid back style. Reviewing my fave group, i had to do a deep dive of all your PTX reviews. I need to give it up for the night, but thank you, i will be back for more.
you do know that is NOT their recording studio in fact if you read the stuff at the beginning it told us that it was the first time in a very long time they were ina room together when recording as they've been doing their parts separately in random studios wherever they were at the time then Ben Bram the engineer put them together for the albums. it is a nice place though since they had only 2 weeks to put this album together!
Your reaction started the video about a minute in, so I'm not sure if you saw the text at the beginning explaining the tight schedule and the fact that this is not their normal recording process.
Btw Kirsten is a little clown. Her behind the scenes videos are hilarious. Even when she was performing with a broken leg using a knee scooter. She is SO stinking cute! And Scott is always playing around.
It is great watching this with a music producer, because you point out things most people wouldn't know. In a prior video, you mentioned that Kevin probably was looping his beats, and I think they do some of that, adding reverb and layers, but most of their songs are also done live, with no backup tracks or even much sound processing. They did one song many years ago with a lot of hand percussion by all of them called "White Winter Hymnal", and it would be great to see your reaction to both the original (link: ua-cam.com/video/o10drRI3VQ0/v-deo.html ) and a recent live version, which also sounded great (link: ua-cam.com/video/ezWS1UtjJ3Y/v-deo.html) (new sub!)

They seem to work very well for him.
Their cover of Can't hold us has a behind the scenes, it's not in the studio but still cool to watch, maybe a good double reaction? Jus sayn 😉
Love this Video
I can tell you know music. You have an ear for the differences. Love your analysis. ❤
Ed Boyer who does all of their. mixibg was already on thd sing off working on it and recommended Ben Bram to be an arranger for the groups
I think he started season 2 and told Scott he should do it.
Check out Superfruit-it’s mitch and Scott from PTX, after PTX was formed but before it really took off, Future Friends is my favorite song they did. I wish they still did music. Those two were born to sing together
Thanks u for watching
I love their album, Evergreen. It's a Christmas album, but I'll listen to it any time of year. Some of the songs aren't necessarily just for Christmas. River is one of my favorites on the album.
So fun! Thanks
I only just noticed that when Kevin said they should get two people to do the body percussion, Scott immediately pointed to Kevin and Matt 🤣🤣🤣
I noticed it a while back and now I laugh every time. 😂
Hi Wolli, i just discovered you today reviewing PTX's rendition of a Kiss from a Rose. I love your cool laid back style. Reviewing my fave group, i had to do a deep dive of all your PTX reviews. I need to give it up for the night, but thank you, i will be back for more.
Great to see you again
This was fascinating watching a producer reaction to the studio work.
I really hope you love this one - I sing also and i love this one
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
This kind of repetition is called woodshedding in chorus singing.
Now you gotta go do the evergreen album and tie it to this. It's a Fantastic Christmas album. Love this stuff!!!!
Kevin does his own music as well. Look up his cover of Down.
You should check out some of Kevin (the beatboxers) solo stuff. He is absolutely amazing. Just look up Kevin O.
you do know that is NOT their recording studio in fact if you read the stuff at the beginning it told us that it was the first time in a very long time they were ina room together when recording as they've been doing their parts separately in random studios wherever they were at the time then Ben Bram the engineer put them together for the albums. it is a nice place though since they had only 2 weeks to put this album together!
The engineer on most of their music is Ed Boyer.
Ed Boyer is the man
Your reaction started the video about a minute in, so I'm not sure if you saw the text at the beginning explaining the tight schedule and the fact that this is not their normal recording process.
Nice
I think Evergreen was recorded in Nashville.
Ben Bram is their arranger and co-founder
"Playboy Hustler" doesn't appeal to me but your reviews do. Thanks for sharing these.
I can dig it
Btw Kirsten is a little clown. Her behind the scenes videos are hilarious. Even when she was performing with a broken leg using a knee scooter. She is SO stinking cute! And Scott is always playing around.
Well damn I wish someone would sing like that to me 😂😂😂(if only)…
It is great watching this with a music producer, because you point out things most people wouldn't know.
Thanks for the support I’ll check it out
I second Gold and add in a requests for Evolution of Rihanna and Evolution of Ariana! 🔥
Wait a minute? I want to feel as good about myself. 2+2 doesn't matter. How I feel is the most important.
Just subbed to your channel please check out their upgraded version of Say Something
