- Pioneer Quest follows two couples as they assume the lives of early settlers to the West and spend one year living as 1870s pioneers on the Canadian prairie. Using only the resources and tools of the period, they will attempt build homes, raise livestock, hunt and grow crops. No running water. No electricity. No modern conveniences. They must work together to feed themselves, build shelter and endure the extreme heat and cold, share the joy of success and the stress of failure, to persevere and prosper. Through the incredible first person experience, Pioneer Quest shows how a large part of Canada was settled and the foundation for this great country was built.
This episode introduces viewers to hundreds of candidates who volunteered to spend an entire year living as 1870s settlers, and profiles both the intense selection process used to select the two couples and their move onto the Manitoba prairie.
I can't believe it's been 20 years already! I watched this on TV when it aired. I always wanted to see it again. It just occurred to me to see if it was available on UA-cam. Thanks so much for uploading it.

This TV show was filmed right here in our home town, Argyle, Manitoba. We are so proud of the opportunity that the series provided for our community, and the history that it revealed for all Canadians. Settlers, Rails & Trails (museum), Argyle, MB
Had a couple teams of horses who needed a soft landing after working the fields. Loved their jobs, and when old Marlon foundered and walked with a limp we tried to retire him. He screamed and screamed from the pasture. One time he was screaming and callig to us as we went our for a drive... then everything went dead silent. Imagine a 2000 lb draft horse draging his fence at a full run. 😳 at that point decided just to harness him and tie him to the team so he thought he was working as he walked next to us. He was so proud afterwards every time he walked out with the team, limping and all. Put a sparkle in his old man eyes. He got too bad last fall and was put down, but he was a good boy to the end.

The charges against Tom were later dropped, apparently it was nothing more than a hug which someone decided to report to the Police.
He passed away just a few years later. Gotta feel bad for the guy, he seemed so happy to be doing this.
The young couple have such a great attitude. Wonder what they are upto now
looks like they're still married and have kids now
That's so sad.. someone overreacted to a hug. And then their dream fell apart.. I think since he died a few years later, he was very broken 💔
Tom is still alive. His wife passed away away April of this year
I just decided I was going to watch this again and of course quickly I remembered Tom & Pat leaving. How terribly unfair that a false accusation can do so harm. I have to wonder about about the person who did this to such a nice couple. that destroyed their dream which angers me. Then to read here Tom passed away not so long after is truly heartbreaking for me, who didn't even know him. I think of Pat and all I can do is feel sorry and say a pray for her. This type of thing has now become a daily thing of people reaching out and destroying another. Once the accusation comes out the damage is done. I'm so sorry for everyone but more for Tom & Pat. I then remember the couple who replaced them and how different they were. That's when I stopped watching the series. The show producers should have stood by Tom and allowed the show to continue. That's how I felt then and I feel the same today. This will have to go down for me as a bad memory as i'm tuning out again. Last time I watched the new couple for one or two shows and then out but now I remember so I'll find another show. Take care everyone. hopefully, there will be another show. 🙏❤

@@Tassie85 DID NOT like the family in Texas.....they treated the ranch hands terribly. The wife controlled the wimpy husband. The other girl that took sides with the family was just as disgusting.

I have the vaguest memories of watching this as a kid in the early 2000s. Let's see how it holds up.
This series, and Frontier House, were amazing inspirations for an aspiring homesteader...
I enjoyed Frontier House except for some fighting but after Pat & Tom left I disconnected from this series.
they sure picked the correct couples ...even in the pre show meetings the pioneers stood right out ...
The only reality show (plus all the other "Quests") that I obsessed over! Love this show!
Only hour's away from me. I watched this 20 years ago When I was 15! Then got to meet them 2001 Steinbach heritage museum! Awesome show! Awesome people! They did good!:)

I pray that this series is as well done and as enjoyable as the farm series that BBC has. I throughly enjoyed all the series.
It was nearly as good as any of the others. I don't know who produced this or i should who had the 'hands on work' in the producing ur they did a terrible job in every way possible. They didn't have the supplies given to the people on the Series that were period appropriate. They also made just careless mistakes like giving them all roosters and no hens. Then not giving oil lamps and giving them new axes that had been lacquer on he handles but no sand paper to get the lacquer off. Just a series of mistakes that should've been obvious to any intelligent person who knew anything about the project. It was probably someone sitting behind a desk who sent a secretary to the store with a list but not a clue to what they were doing. It seemed that way to me as a viewer. They dropped the ball & then to say they needed 48 hours to begin to correct some errors???? They could've picked up sand paper & a few hens that same day! Sloppy & lazy. I did check back in later and it was clear the new couple wasn't doing anything like what was described at the beginning before the Series ended. They had gotten involved in their church who jumped to help them. They claimed the religious conflict and got away with bringing in people from present day all the time. A real mess. I don't know why the producers allowed this but it appeared the couple kind of had them by the throat. So, I again, turned the channel as the point of tge series was completely lost.
I want to live like that. Im a hard worker and just dying to get a homestead. ❤

I am living my best life as a (modern. Lol) Pioneer settler, now. On dark cold nights, I like to compare my lifestyle to that of others and see what is amiss on either side. Yes, I watch YT.
My daughters mill grain, and we forage for wild fodder.

It seems like the highest place would be best, since there is a lot of clay in the soil, and this holds water. I would have chosen the place right next to the large water supply. In the spring this would mean STICKY MUD, but the canal would help drain that off. Water is a MUST for the animals especially. The wooded location for a house would mean critters (coyotes, bears, etc.) live there, and could possibly bother your animals more. As they found out, the clay ground was rock hard and hard to dig a well in. We are in Michigan USA, and even as far south as our capitol city of Lansing, we get coyotes, bear at times, and other critters that bother the livestock. I am curious to see if the women choose to wear skirts, with layers and layers of petticoats, instead of longjohns. The old fashioned "knickers" allowed a woman to wee without having to pull down pants. Much easier than trying to deal with longjohns! I have ancestors that help settle Carlinville, Illinois, and they had wolves that far south! The wolves would try to get into the cabin by crawling under the floor and attempting to claw their way up through the boards in winter. It is very interesting to read my ancestors diaries. The area in Carlinville was very marshy at that time (before they drained the land as it is today) and it was nicknamed "Frog Pond Kingdom".

I thought the Frontier House was so much better.
In the first attempt to milk the cow, it was disturbing to see the teats being pulled on through her fingers/hands. :( Later looked a bit better. An animal is milked like one would play a recorder. Hold firmly to press off the flow and then squeeze adding one finger at a time similar to how one would add one finger at a time to cover the holes on the instrument. But of course closing the hand completely, not just the finger tips. This pushes the milk downward and out, just pulling the teat down does not get the milk out properly and can lead to damage.
They were fortunate to get to sleep til 6:30 am! My rooster crows like 'clockwork' at around 5am. When daylight savings time change came in October, he crowed at 4am for a few days as that used to be his 5am. Once the timer got adjusted for light to come on a the new time, he began to crow at 5 am again. His brain and body adjusted automatically so quickly! Too bad no one told them the stress of the move, being cramped in a small cage etc. would cause the hens not to lay. They need to feel safe and comfortable to lay eggs. Even changes in a flock, or any presence of a predator can put hens of laying.
Maybe salt the pork? make it last. (also two rosters in one cage?) that is just dumb
If you cook pork real crisp it will last for days. Any pioneer woman of that generation (even a city woman) would have known how to keep the meat from spoiling for a time. In the US south they fried it crisp, packed it in a crock and poured boiling grease to cover it. They then sealed the lid on with hot wax. They kept it that way.

Re: the man who had to leave b/c of the assault charges - I'm confused. They said the couple found out about the charges on the morning of the "clothes fitting and press conference". So why didn't they drop out at that point? And why wasn't the man arrested? Did they think they could just ignore the charges for a whole year? It's weird that they would hold it all in until they got to the site. What a strange story.
Most charges take up to 2 years to even get to the first court date.
I don't think they knew what to do nor was there a time to speak with someone. It was the same hour of the Press Meeting which is why they were late. If it had been the day before but it wasn't. Terrible as it was a false accusation & destroyed this experience for them and for some viewers like myself.

I doubt if the pioneers would have complained about sand paper..make do with what you've got....it wasn't easy that is obvious
Thing is, no one ever would have used lacquer on their tool handles back in those days, even if it existed. It is added to modern tool handles to make look more desirable to the public, and it is a very cheap way to seal the wood from moisture. The problem with it is, it forms a smooth, plastic layer that grabs your skin and doesn't allow for the tool to slide in your hands as they're supposed to during use. In pioneer days, wooden tools would have been oiled occasionally, and kept out of the weather in order to protect them. They wouldn't be coated in plastic just to keep them looking "pretty" for longer. Go out and swing an ax with a lacquered handle with bare hands for about an hour and you'll understand the the validity of this complaint. Then ponder using all of the wooden handled tools that they must, all day, every day, for a year. It's a bigger issue than you think, if your number one tools(your hands) are decommissioned due to deep blisters penetrating even your deepest calluses. It could quickly become an infection issue under the circumstances.

I immediately lost respect for the producer when the narrator revealed what Tom was charged with. What a WILDLY irresponsible, even savage thing to report. When such charges are leveled at a person, it doesn't even matter if he is innocent. The public will treat him as if he is guilty. The producer and director had no business revealing what the charge was about. The Crown dropped the charge. Tom died a few years later with a broken legacy because these dirtbags chose to air out an accusation before it even went to trial. May they reap what they sow so that they can learn through personal suffering to never do that kind of dirty move again.
You might want to check your information before posting…he didn’t die…his wife died in April 2021. He’s still alive…the person everyone else posted about was from Chicago and didn’t even have the correct last name.

Whoever bought and stocked the wagon didn't explore the project thoroughly as their preparations weren't correct at all. Too many mistakes were made with their provisions which were clearly someone who had no clue what they were doing. Terrible preparation by production. I'd forgotten how badly they had done. Many, many mistakes that were just careless and thoughtless.
I never watched it back when it was first done but, now years later I can see how incompetent their production team was. They obviously didn't provide them with the proper equipment nor supplies. Of course that may have been due to ignorance of items every pioneer had available to them.

These four people were so totally clueless. Not even equipped with basic life skills, let alone farming-in--the-past skills. Alana is attempting to begin a garden and they are trying to plow at this point?! Anyone should know three things every human needs: to eat, to sleep, to go to the bathroom. You set up those three basic things FIRST. Then you're set up to do everything else. And since they are exposed to the elements, they need a shelter/roof for a kitchen, toilet and to solidify their tent as fast as possible. I would have had meetings with the Producers before I ever left the "20th Century" to see what preparations they had made. Plus I'd be having talks with the other couple, who I am supposed to be working WITH, and asking/thinking things like, "How will we care for the animals? What are our first tasks when we get there? Who is best at what?" When I originally saw this 20 years ago I thought, "If they don't get some help soon, they are doomed." Thank God, help does arrive. Although they are too arrogant to realize it. LL
You fail to realize that many actual pioneers were also clueless. They either came from cities or somewhere in Europe and were unfamiliar with farming and the climate. Many suffered, had to quit, some even died.
I’m just starting to watch this on tubi. I’m actually 3/4 of th way through on the first episode and omg, it’s so crazy to see how whiney they are. We need sandpaper for the handles on our hand tools and plow handles. They are too slick, anybody knows that he said. Geez, for $100,000.00 you can put blisters on my entire body!! I mean they chose to do this and the constant whining is gonna get old if they don’t stop.
Is it just me or do I hear constant stock sounds of farm animals edited in the background 🤨 it disturbs the experience and is a clear indicator that this is an american TV show 😂

I feel sorry for the animals that were forced to do so much work. Watching those horses have to pull that heavy load pisses me off.
That's their job! Every farm animal has specific work to do. Cows work to give milk, chickens work to provide eggs & meat. What's the use of strong heavy animals staying out in the field doing nothing while their muscles whither away from lack of work? Are you okay with the humans doing all the hard work when the study horses could be doing what they were created to do?
