Lovebites, Nemophilia are pretty straight forward Metal. Band Maid are more like Modern Rock. They combine a variety metal beats with the catchy chorus you might find in pop rock, get the crowd pumped and involved like the punk rockers of old... move into a killer breakdown with some face melting solo's then just rock you out thru the outro. And that might all be in just one song. They are talented enough to do whatever they want and their song are very different because of it. Welcome to the Maidiac's.

I think Band Maid is a fusion group that just sounds like hard rock. But it's a lot of different stuff. They aren't restricted by tedious notions of genre.
I think people underrate how much they blend genres because they do it more subtly than some other Japanese groups.

@@jameejams2229 And above them all stands BabyMetal, the only Asian group to ever hit #1 on Billboard's Top Rock Album chart. BabyMetal and Black Pink are the only albums by girl groups in history to enter the Top 10 of Billboard’s World Albums Year End Chart. Give HeadBanger Legend of 1997 a listen for an epic crowd.

They range in age from 28 (Saiki, the lead vocalist) to 31 (Akane, the drummer). Not only are they one of the best hard rock bands on the planet, they are all very charming and really funny, especially when they're together.

Yeah, so at this concert in Feb 14, 2020 Saiki had just turned 26 on Feb 8th, MISA was 27, Miku & Kanami were 28 and Akane was 29.
They’ve been a band since 2013 when, I believe, Saiki was only 19 and Akane was 22.

Ten years together with all original members. They have spent that decade developing their writing, arranging, instrumental and live performance skills. It just gets better and better. Plenty to explore with 7+ albums, live DVDs, multiple EPs and singles along with about 30 MVs. Enjoy the ride. I had a cancer year myself and aside from family and friends, Band-Maid provided vital support.

A few years back, I had surgery. On the table, the doc lean over and asked me what music I liked. Of course, I said Band-Maid. Someone went over to a computer they had setup to play music from the internet. Suddenly, Thrill was blasting into the operating room. Everyone was grooving and smiling to the Maid Music as I slipped unconscious. So cool! Hope you are recovering well, Tom!

Naturally formed, writing their songs (mainly Kanami [lead guitar]) since 2016, they are best friends with each other doing a lot of things together in their freetime...
For me it is the best possible mix between hard, heavy rock and memorable chorusses. Really versatile, so their style ranges from metal, rock, punk, pop, jazz, funk, blues and even some opera intros also written by Kanami... I found them some years ago, they changed my take on music and i have JOY to listen to music again! Greetings from Germany

The Maids have a big following outside of Japan. They will celebrate 10 years together next year. The music over the years covers most genres from pop, punk to mainly rock. But they can turn their skill to most things. Live they just look magical and recorded brilliant. The best Maid song is the last one you heard. They have great charisma and are the best thing in Rock I have seen for decades.

Welcome aboard, Jamee. You are embarking on (along with many others - 140 million YT views!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (118 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World” and new single drops), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ua-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/v-deo.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Sense, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis!
And many songs are represented with over 40 well produced music videos. ua-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” ua-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/v-deo.html
 Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th “Domination” ua-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/v-deo.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” ua-cam.com/video/-qQnKILR5u0/v-deo.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 (The last two are on bandmaidprime.tokyo and DVD/BD/CD)
And some of the better quality 2019 tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues:
 Taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ua-cam.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/v-deo.html
     And by JOSER8845 in LA: ua-cam.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/v-deo.html.
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 28 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 30 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 30 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 31 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 29 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 Got your tickets yet? BAND-MAID's 8 state, 11 gig USA tour is SOLD OUT! HOWEVER, they just added two more venues in New Jersey Oct. 30 (4,000 seats), and Chicago, Nov. 1. And the "AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL 2022" in Sacramento, California on Sunday, October 9 may still have tickets. Check Ticketmaster and Band-Maid’s website quickly!

THE best Rock band in existence. Think that's everything covered. Oh, go on then, a bit of easter egg info for this video...At 4:13 - MISA, the bassist, Kanami the lead guitarist and composer, and Miku the rhythm guitarist and founder of the band, are playing Hengao - "strange faces" - with Akane the drummer, which is making funny faces to try and put someone off. Akane, of course, laughs along while not missing a beat. It shows the ladies' confidence in each others' abilities that they can fool around like this while all of them slam out note-perfect Rock at full tilt. At 5:02 - MISA the bassist is holding her plectrum in her curled finger so she can produce it and switch from slapping to picking in half a nanosecond - skills! At 6:52 - A brief glimpse of Kanami laying down one sweet rolling chord pattern - pure class. THE best live Rock band on Earth. And beyond.

Jamee, I'm happy you are recovering from cancer. I'm a cancer survivor myself. But, what I'm happy to see is that you have reviewed a Band Maid video. I'm an old geezer, but I've heard a LOT of rock music in my past, and I think that Band Maid is the reincarnation of hard rock music. If you choose to do so, you can jump down the Band Maid rabbit hole with the rest of us Maidiacs. It's a wonderful trip. These young women are the real thing. They are incredibly talented and they live to entertain their audiences. Some suggested songs: Onset (a rock instrumental), Manners/ Black Hole ( a twofer video showing contrasting style of their music in one video), Daydreaming (a wonderful rock ballad with a killer guitar rift). Warning ( a frenetic masterpiece). I hope those songs will give some insight into their talent.

BAND-MAID is not just another interesting and fun band. This band is something really very special on the contemporary rock scene. Many do not see it right away, but start when they realize that they have listened to 20 songs and that the end of fantastic songs is nowhere in sight and that they have at least 4 times as many left. Determining the age of Japanese women is very easy. Assign them years in your opinion and then add a minimum of 5 to that number (sometimes 10 is a little). Lovebites - done, BAND-MAID - done, next - Nemophila. Enjoy the ride !

I might have missed it, but I don't see anyone has given you their back story yet. So, basically Miku (rhythm guitar & backing vocals) was between groups and was working in a traditional Japanese Maid Cafe. So instead of finding another gig she decided to form her own group, so she combined the maid cafe uniform attire for the look along with the pun on words to create Band Maid. She saw Kanami (lead guitar) doing her own independent music projects on-line, called her and got her to join, Kanami knew Akane (Drummer) from working with her and got her to join. Akane knew MISA (base player) since all the way back in music school and got her onboard. Miku was originally supposed to sing lead vocals but after Kanami put together a few songs they realized Miku's voice was not strong enough to carry all the different kinds of hard rock songs they were planning to do. She, they held auditions and found Suiki (Lead Vocalist).

    • @wepprop
      @wepprop 2 роки тому

This is all pretty accurate as far as I know but it kinds of slants things like the girls are completely on their own. However, Miku was signed with a talent agency (or whatever they call it in Japan) and she pitched the Band-Maid concept to them - they told her to go ahead. Miku found the three instumentalists and they had to sign with the same agency. When they needed a new vocalist, they asked the agency if anyone was available and the agency suggested Saiki, but said she won't like the costumes So Saiki was asked to try out with the band but neither the agency nor the band told her about the costumes until later. She really didn't like the costumes but by that point she was hooked on the musicianship.
Their first couple of mini-albums didn't do well in Japan so, by the time they filmed the music video for 'Thrill', the agency had decided to 'cancel' the group. But the 'Thrill' video went viral and got like 2,000,000 views, mostly overseas, in two weeks,. So their music was changed from pop-style music to hard rock and the rest is history. The agency didn't tell the girls they almost got cancelled until considerably later....

Stage presence is a function of how much fun they are having. They pretty much always appear to be having a blast. Anything live by Band-Maid is a treat.
The same can be said for Aldious - a predominately live band J-Metal that really started this current scene and who’s guitarist and bassist are about the most into it you can get. Find Yozakura live for a taste of that awesomeness.
Another live powerhouse from Japan are Nemophila. Like LOVEBITES they are technically awesome, and like Band-Maid, they clearly love what they are doing. Check out Oiran live at Naon Yaon for a sample of that exceptional experience. Nemophila are playing in LA July 1st too - can’t wait!

Yup, these ladies ROCK! They play around a bit too, so there's plent yof variety within the 'rock' genre. I'd suggest the "Manners" and "Black Hole" double for your next viewing - the first is more bluesy/funky and the latter is very much more of a 'metal' vibe. You can find them on the BM YT channel - ua-cam.com/users/BANDMAID

MISA!!! MISA!!! MISA!!! 🥃🥃🥃 Badass Bass Assassin and Band-Maid are the best Hard Rock band in the world right now. Band-Maid MV's are very good but their Live videos are 10 times better because you can see how talented these 5 musicians really are in concert and how much fun they have on stage with each other. You should check out the official Live versions of Play, Onset, Freedom, Manners/Black Hole, Real Existence, After Life, Warning and Choose Me just to get you started. Then you can react to the MV Dice, After Life, Warning and Manners. The Band-Maidiacs or Maidiacs can help you with those hard to find official Live links of Don't You Tell Me, Moratorium, Take Me Higher, Turn Me On and (both electric and acoustic versions) 🤙🏼

Honestly, without gimmicks I must say for so many of us discovering them was/is a life-changing event, they're that good and infectious. Great to see others going through that same journey of discovery. The Ban-Maid rabbit hole is deep and worth investigating....so many songs of versatility that are incredible (in fact, no weak BM songs on their last 4 albums).....perhaps next try "Daydreaming" for the ultimate perfection!

Great reaction to a fantastic band. I discovered them about two years ago and their live performances reminded me of one of the great live bands of my youth - Cheap Trick. Then I learned that Band-Maid's primary songwriter is the very quirky lead guitarist, Nanami Tono, just like Cheap Trick is led by the quirky lead guitarist, Rick Nielsen. Both are masters at writing catchy rock songs but I think Kanami is on another level.
In response to some misguided commenters claiming that Band-Maid is manufactured band, I typed a short biography of the band. I hope this is helpful to you.
Band-Maid started from the brain of Miku Kobato in early 2013. She had been in an Idol trio that didn't catch on and like many Japanese girls trying to make it as an Idol singer, she worked in a Maid Cafe to make ends meet. When her trio fizzled out, she approached her label and suggested a band dressed like maids but who played hard rock. This was the same year Babymetal was blowing up in Japan (the nest year they would blow up worldwide). I have no doubt the Babymetal success helped with the label giving Miku the green light. At this time Miku was a pop singer that didn't play an instrument, yet wanted to form a rock band. Miku went on a talent search and found the UA-cam channel of a singer songwriter guitarist named Kanami Tono. Miku was very impressed with Kanami and pitched the idea, maid outfits and all. Since Kanami preferred writing songs and playing guitar much more than singing, she agreed to join and even liked the maid outfit idea. Kanami also suggested they add a drummer named Akane Hirose, who Kanami had worked with before. Akane wasn't thrilled with maid outfits and had no desire to join an all girl group, but she respected Kanami a great deal so said yes. Akane had gone to school with a bass player named Misa and suggested her to Miku. Misa, however, didn't like the maid outfit part at all. After thinking about it for a day, she also said yes. Miku had her band.
The label supplied a few songs and the band started playing. Miku discovered a big problem. She realized that she simply didn't have the voice to front a rock band with the caliber of musicians surrounding her. To her credit, Miku started looking for a lead singer. While at her Label's offices, she heard someone singing and was liked what she heard. The voice belonged to Saiki Atsumi who was a dancer and backup singer. Miku told her about the band (leaving out the maid outfit part) and asked Saiki to audition for the band. The audition went very well so the band invited her to join and told her about the maid outfits. Saiki disliked the maid outfit part more than Misa, but she really liked the band. She said yes.
Band-Maid released their first album, cleverly titled Maid in Japan, on January 8, 2014. All the music and lyrics of the 8 song, 30 minute album were written by others. The mini album failed to chart at all in Japan. Their second album called New Beginning (9 songs and 33 minutes) released November 18, 2015 only reached #64 on the Japanese Oricon charts. Again all the music and lyrics were written by others. Two good things came out of that album though. The first was the music video for Thrill, the first song on the album. The music video was released the year prior to no fanfare at all. Band-Maid's small label was going to end the band and make Miku and Saiki a singing, dancing pop duo because New Beginning was not selling. Then suddenly western audiences discovered the music video of Thrill and Band-Maid exploded outside of Japan. The Thrill music video now has over 17 million views. Second, a sub-label of the giant Nippon Crown came calling and signed Band-Maid.
Now with a new and bigger label, Band-Maid released Brand New Maid (8 songs, 31 minutes) on May 18, 2016. In addition a song by Kanami Tono was included on the album, with Miku and Saiki writing lyrics for the song and two others. The album reached #19 on the Oricon chart. Now Miku had a new problem, she didn't really know how to play guitar yet. On the albums, Kanami played her parts and in small concerts she just pretended (she was obviously just holding the guitar on the Thrill music video). In 2016, the new label was sending them on an overseas tour in front of crowds larger than they ever had in Japan. Lucky for Miku, she knew a very talented guitarist eager to teach her - Kanami Tono. Miku started finally to learn to play the guitar she had been holding. The 2016 tour was a success, especially in Europe. They also had a show in Seattle, Washington.
On July 17, 2017, the album Just Bring It was released. With 13 songs it was by far the longest album (50 minutes). I also consider it the first true Band-Maid album. Kanami wrote 9 of the 13 songs and the lyrics on 11 songs were written by Miku and Saiki, primarily Miku. The album reached #16 on the Oricon charts. It also charted in the UK.
On February 14, 2018, the band released World Domination (14 songs, 54 minutes). All the lyrics were written by Miku (except one cowritten by Saiki) and all songs were written by Kanami (3 she cowrote with non-band members). This album reached #9 in Japan and charted worldwide. It is my second favorite Band-Maid album.
In 2019, Band-Maid returned to the United States but only four shows. On December 4, 2019, they released Conqueror (15 songs, 55 minutes). While they were working on Conqueror, they were contacted by Tony Visconti because he had heard them and wanted to produce a Band-Maid song. Kanami sent him one of her songs and assumed that he would changes. He did not. Tom Kenney wrote the lyrics and Miku and Saiki flew to New York to record the vocals. The song, The Dragon Cries, is the 11th track on the album.
They were able to video a live concert in February 2020, before the pandemic shut things down. Videos from that performance have become very popular on UA-cam. Sometime in 2020, Band-Maid changed labels, going from a sub-label of Nippon Crown to a Pony Canyon, a major label, On January 13, 2021, they released Unseen World (12 songs, 45 minutes). All the songs were written by Kanami and all lyrics by Miku. Unseen World is my favorite Band-Maid album and in my top 10 of last year. Kanami wrote the song Manners as a tribute to western classic rock. It is my favorite on the album and possibly one of my favorite songs of the last 20 years.

Nice. Pretty much my reaction when I saw this. These girls differ from a lot of popular asian groups in that they create their own music and image. Even the maid thing was the brainstorm of the founder, Miku (2nd vocal and rhythm guitar). There is a short, funny, fairly recent interview with them ( ua-cam.com/video/SltjaoNBlbY/v-deo.html ) that spotlights the public personalities they cultivate, especially Mike's, and explains how the band began. The song they play at 7:50 but don't show is ( Rinne ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=band+maid+rinne ). The juxtaposition of the first seven minutes, fifty seconds of the interview with this song is awesome. I aways thought it would be entertaining to do a reaction to the interview, stopping at 7:50 to react to Rinne, and then back to the final couple minutes of the interview. But it would also just be fun for you on your own to get to know these girls.

Interesting comment that 'chicks' who play guitar are cool. I totally agree with you, and apparently that was exactly the reason and goal why lead guitarist Kanami picked up the guitar one day. She wanted to be cool, and holy sh**, that's exactly what she achieved! And not only can she play her instrument like only a few others out there can, she is also the songwriter of the band, has a sugar-sweet voice and when you see her off-stage, you just want to give her a hug. :)
Wait, did you call for an encore at the end? :) Then there is really only one song that I can recommend. 'Onset' ... 'Real Existence', 'Freedom', 'Wonderland' (all of them live) or their first MV 'Thrill' are also good options to continue the journey with the ladies. :)
And with that, greetings from the German Maidiacs section and welcome to the pigeon-hole. 😉🤘🏻

You see the energy of the Ladies during this song. This is the 22nd song of a 23 song set. They maintain this same energy level from the start to the finish. I would recommend you react to PLAY next which is the song immediately before this one at this concert. I would also recommend from the same concert, Freedom, Wonderland and Choose Me. From a previous concert I would recommend Onset, Real Existence, and Cross. Their video for Secret My Lips is the studio track played over a live performance but the song is still very very good.
Almost ANY Band Maid song is Excellent. There are a few I don't enjoy as much as I do the rest, but I do enjoy their entire catalog of 118+ songs. Now I will add the info Dump:
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku contacted her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her. Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo.
Now we have the "Core" members. I'm not too sure about the part but if I am wrong other Maidiacs will correct me in the comments. The 4 members worked out some songs and a setlist and from my understanding, they had actually performed 2 or 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. I may be wrong on that so don't take that as canon. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. (I'm not sure about this part as I can't find the comment I read over on Reddit) She had been a member of a group with 8 other people and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool Clothes", and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until I believe it was 2 days before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract.
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
    ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which only charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill.
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album hadn't even charted, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their UA-cam channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.
The following info is from a comment left by UA-cam user @DanW60
Thrill was from their album New Beginning which was released in November, 2015. They didn't write any of the songs or lyrics on the album and it was only 33 minutes. As mentioned, Miku didn't even know how to play guitar at the time. The album went nowhere in Japan and their small label called Gump was about to drop them. Gump's plan was to keep Miku and Saiki as a singing and dancing duo and let the rest go. Then a miracle happened. The music video for Thrill became a huge hit on UA-cam, especially in the west. Band-Maid was saved and they changed labels to Crown Stones (a sub-label to a really big Japanese media company called Nippon Crown). Their 2016 album, Brand New maid, peaked at #19 on the Japanese charts but only one song was written by Kanami and it was only 31 minutes in length. Finally, in January 2017, they released the album Just Bring It which was a full album at 50 minutes. More importantly, 9 of the 13 songs were written by Kanami. In my opinion, it was the first true Band-Maid album. The album got as high as #16 in Japan and also charted in the UK. The next 3 albums - World Domination, Conqueror and Unseen World - all charted top 10 in Japan and charted overseas. All the songs were written by Kanami. She is the one that has pushed Misa and Akane to be as good as they are now, and also very successfully taught Miku to play guitar.

Great Fun Reaction, May I suggest If and when you react to Band-Maid's "Don't you tell me", please make it a double play of the same song - one - their official video showing off their "gap" as they like to call it visually and their favorite 'passions' AND two - the live 'serving' of "Don't You Tell Me (LIVE at ZEPP TOKYO" (Arenillas's channel) showing off their musical prowess, stage presence and just rocking out.
The same song twice explains the whole package of Band-Maid IMHO.
The 'gap' is what they describe as the look of the band apart from the sound they provide and 'passions' is acting out what they most desire. This is portrayed from interviews as love of food (Akane), drink(Misa), the band's happiness-po,(Miku), fashion (Saiki) and love of the singer by the guitar player (Kanami)-self-deprecating humor.
The live 'serving' shows off IMHO best Misa/Kanami duel-battle (Misa hands down BTW) Sorry long note - keep doing those wonderful candid reactions🤘

A lot of people can't get past the outfits and think it's ridiculous or simply are ignorant of maid cafes in Japan. Simply put, they're just places you go to eat where the waitresses are dressed like maids. In America, the equivalent would be Hooters. :)

I agree with Steve and Tommy except to say that for my money they are The best all around rock band on the planet ! Rock On Jamee every song these women put out is fantastic. I do tend to prefer their live videos just because you get to see them play better.

As for Japanese bands I recommend I recommend Nemophila. They are a young band and still growing musically but no gimmicks, other than good Musicianship. In July they will be playing at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood Ca. and in Aftershock festival in Oct. with band maid.

    Hi Jamee,
I'm certainly a fan of BAND-MAID. In my opinion, they are saving rock music from the mediocre.
You said that nothing was off limits. So I would ask you to look at Diana Ankudinova (dee-ah-na ahnkoo-DEE-nuhvuh). Most people seem to be impressed with her performance of "Can't Help Falling in Love": m.ua-cam.com/video/M-znD6QKbrg/v-deo.html
at age 18. It's impressive, but not my favorite. Her performance of the Russian folk tale, "Rechenka": m.ua-cam.com/video/fEcvVINA304/v-deo.html is pure art. Prepare to be hypnotized by a 14 year old girl.

Jamee, you could use a better balance on your volume mix. Your video volume is very low and your voice overrides it. Listeners have to turn up the music to hear it, then you come in we get blown away with your volume. It's a tough listen when we have to keep readjusting...... fun react except for that.

I feel bad for Kanami. She's a great guitarist but she'll never be as good as the bassist and drummer. I've decided she's my favorite.
