Thank you for all the interesting information about the quayside all I can remember about the quayside is Sunday morning market where I did go with mam really interesting about the history 😊😊
In the early 1960’s my Mother worked in an office next to Bessie Surtees House, which is now all the same building. She worked on the 3rd floor, the rest of the upper floors were empty. I used to explore the old building on Saturday mornings when she was working by herself. Behind it was a very narrow medieval back lane or street, which could be accessed through a pub yard at the bottom of Dean Street. There is a bit of a cliff face there with ancient steps leading part way up, you can probably still see them from the Moot Hall car park. I was about 12 years old, and totally fascinated with the buildings. The upper floors had not been converted to offices, so we’re still as they were originally. The Company She worked for was Foy, Morgan and Company, they were Timber shipping agents. Later moved into Exchange Buildings.
Love the Bridges, love the Quayside and love the Toon! It’s full of surprises isn’t it!!? Your research into the history along with the delivery is a pleasure to listen too. Looking forward to more!
From a fellow Geordie now living in Liverpool, thank you so much for doing this video. There is nothing like returning to Newcastle by train & looking down river to see the Tyne Bridge. I will never tire of that feeling for home. Very best wishes & please keep up all of the good work.
In the late 90's I was situated just outside of Exeter, 8 bloody hours on trains and seeing the Angel and then the Tyne bridge always filled me with joy
Great video, I have only visited Newcastle recently and I must say it's one of my favourite places in the UK! I wish I watched this video before my trip. Beautiful city, convenient transport (metro service is fantastic) and very friendly people!
Eddy .. I've just very recently found your channel and I'm loving it. Great work. As for the Crown Posada, check out the track by Smoove and Turrell. It's a fantastic tribute to the establishment. It's on their album "Crown Posada".
I enjoyed that thanks, I'm a Mackem but am interested in all North East history and have learnt a couple of things there. Sadly our own town council(s) in Sunderland through the years have managed to obliterate almost all of our historic buildings, Newcastle hasn't suffered quite as badly thankfully. The Crown Posada, by the way, is a great bar!
Being brought up in this region, there are still things I did not know about. Especially the great fire of Newcastle. Your videos are amazing. So informative. Cheers, marra. Keep up the good work.
The Quayside...this takes me back. When I lived in Newcastle in the early 80's this was a favourite haunt. We'd start our drinking in the Crown Posada, then the Red House and then go on to The Cooperage if there was a band on (Arthur 2 Stroke and The Chart Commandos for preference) otherwise we'd go up to The Baltic pub (not the arts centre which was still an empty warehouse). Occasionally we'd go on the Tuxedo Princess nightclub boat but I preferred Tuxedo Junction in the town. I can still remember some old, derelict wharfs near the site where the Millennium Bridge is now sited...there was a sign there which said "Trespassers who are not drowned will be prosecuted ". Happy days.
I love the history of Newcastle. You should do an hour long documentary, or even longer if needed, detailing the history of the city. You could use old photos and show how much things have changed over the years. I was amazed watching a film called Payroll. It’s crazy how much the world has changed in 50 years and it is almost terrifying to imagine where it could be in another 50…
I agree, the world is changing rapidly! I’ve no plans to do a long video like you mention as there’s no advantage for me to put everything into one video. Breaking it all down into bite size chunks keeps my viewers engaged and helps the channel grow. Thanks for the message 👍🏻
So true. If somebody offered me the chance to look through a view finder showing what life will be like in 50 years time...i`d refuse to look. Its mad that we live in a world where cash is a nuisance to companies, I agree that Eddie could do an hour long doc detailing all the history of the city
Love this, at the time of writing this comment I've just got home after walking through the quayside from work, despite being such a small city were lucky to have such a massive hub of British history packed into it
It’s lovely to see the old history remembered Eddy and shared with our younger generations. As you didn’t mention who built the swing bridge, I’m hoping that there will be, at some time in the future, a video on the history of it, and that of one of Britain’s greatest engineers and industrialist of his day, William Armstrong?
Hi Eddie I think the manager of the Crown Posada told me once that it used to have windows all the way down one side of the building but they blew out during the war so they bricked the holes up and then put all the mirrors on the wall to create light. Might have got the story mixed up after a couple of pints though 🙂
Another great history lesson Eddie! Thanks very much for improving my home town history. I've forwarded tyem to friends and family who also love them.🙂
For all work started on the Sydney Harbour Bridge first' the Tyne Bridge was actually completed first' it was due to the sheer size of the thing. The size difference is immense! If you ever go to Aus be sure to do the guided tour over the span. Great content as always 👍🏻👍🏻

I'm a couple of days late with a comment as I had no internet where I live but back on now. Another great history lesson Eddy very interesting and the bridges are always a big feature in Newcastle. I remember when I was a kid my dad would take me and my brothers on a Sunday to see street acts on the quayside.
Great video. The Crown Posada is on the list to visit next time in visiting from the Midlands. My daughter is at Uni in Newcastle and it's interesting to pick bits of local history from your videos.
Thanks for the history lesson and Great video Eddie as a life long Newcastle fan and not born a Geordie great to know more history about the city so thank you
Interesting and accurate video, luckily enough to have live about 5 mins walk to the Redheugh bridge and watch the latest one being built, do you remember a boat called the Bessie Surtees constantly on the Tyne. Massive fire tried to get the chronicle interested into doing a historical piece about 3 years ago.
@7:08 you can see the Offshore bar. One of my favorite bars ever. The Quilted Camel was equally as good as well, right next door. People don't realize that the quayside was THE place to be. The earth is 4.5 billion years old. How lucky was I to be have my youth at the same time as the quaysides heyday.
@@TynesideLife Actually, there was a rumor going around back in the day, not sure if it’s true, that David Ginolas wife wouldn’t let him frequent the Quayside unless she was there with him. Brilliant times.

Interesting to note only one person died during the construction of the bridge.. mad when you look at the old photos/footage of the blokes shimmying their way along beams with no safety gear, just flat caps and tweed jackets! Also with the great fire, I read that large debris was blown 3/4 of a mile away and it was heard as far away as Hartlepool!
@@robtodd444 yeah that’s right about the explosion. It was described as being like a volcano erupting and 3/4 of a mile is roughly Ouseburn. Only one building was untouched on the quayside
Good video. I certainly didn't know anything about Quayside other than knowing it was there! Not being local I found it really interesting. Look forward to seeing more.
