The part of "the rest I can do without" is actually an E major, reason being it adds tension, and it borrow the chords from the G scale when you can arguably say the song is in Am(inor). Many songs do this, first to come to mind is Don't look back in Anger by Oasis, when after playing an Am(inor), they go to an E major, to add tension between sections.
Edit: Sometimes i talk without thinking, The Gmajor key does not have an Emajor, so I googled searched why it works (though i didnt get a great answer) "The chords C major and E major are related by the common tone they share: E" according to an answer in Quorra. It sounds good and it works so... maybe someone else knows the theory behind it.
