In 2018 machines that can read your face will go mainstream, changing the way we live. Your face will become your password, unlocking smartphones and bank accounts, but the technology will also have the power to covertly track your movements.
It will even be able to guess your sexuality through facial features alone. In 2018 we'll be forced to face the future.
The human face has an astonishing variety of features which not only help us recognize others, but read and understand them through a constant flow of intentional and unintentional signals. It's one of the unique functions that separates man from machine, until now.
Pioneering facial recognition technology hasn't yet hit the mainstream. In 2018 it will be in our pockets. But using your face to unlock your phone is just the beginning.
In the suburbs of Israel's financial center, Tel Aviv, a team of engineers is at the forefront of a technological revolution. They're teaching machines to read faces.
The software has the power to identify one face from millions in under one second and it's this precision that makes the technology an effective new tool for surveillance.
Retail stores are using this technology to generate data on customers; tracking their shopping habits and targeting in-store adverts. Churches are even using facial recognition to monitor attendance, and one school in the UK wants to use it to keep tabs on teachers.
There's one country that's ahead of the game, China. Companies have access to a government image database of 700 million people, half its population. But there's the potential for more sinister applications. Researchers have shown that your face can point to your sexuality.
This new ability to record, store, and analyze images of faces on a vast scale will fundamentally change notions of privacy, fairness, and trust.
But tech companies are forging ahead with their plans to make facial recognition an everyday part of our lives.

They don't need to track your face, Google already has full location history data on most users.
Yeah but there are still people that don't use smartphones or google. And they couldn't be tracked before. With automated face recognition in public places everyone can be tracked.

Gad Va the data of people who use Google or smartphone is more interesting for marketing analysis. This group of people are easier to earn their money. I think facial recognition has high efficiency for the company or government to respond.
tk The reason Google and facebook were kicked out of China was that the Chinese government do not want Chinese people to read their own history by googling it. Facebook was banned because it can be used to communicate person to person with no control at all available to the Chinese government.
VPN helps keep these greasy ass companies from tracking you, but the government damn well knows every single byte you send/recieve. The only way to have real privacy is to live in a faraday cage lined with mylar (anti-infrared) in a hole in the ground in the middle of nowhere.

Facial recognition combined with a few other measures can reliably identify even people who have plastic surgery since people do not get total face reconstruction and cannot change certain basic characteristics of their face such as the distance between their eyes.
exnihilo415 it’s absolutely astonishing, and you would be surprised to know that artificial intelligence can reconstruct the facial structures of people in disguise. Effort to bamboozle AI system, from sunglasses to plastic surgeries, have been already over taken.
So what you're saying is, we need AI to bamboozle the other AI systems. Until then I'll walk around with a full face motorcycle helmet on with mirrored visor.
High contrast face paint that you change up from day to day will mess up these systems. Of course you could just make it a social taboo to do this just as wearing a ski mask into a bank.

The future displayed in this video sounds extremely creepy. Especially when you think of a government that tracks everyone or a company that tracks their employees. But now we can still intervene and form a better future. We need to inform our democratic politicians about the problems that would come or are already there with a total automated surveillance. The biggest problem I see is the negativ impact it has on our personal lives and our personality that changes when you know you are being watched. The politicians must pass bills now to protect privacy.
We can start off by voting for techno phobic MP's and lobby MP's to vote no for these technology. That's the beauty of democracy.(Unless you live in Singapore)

Facial recognition coupled with speech recognition and computer animation will give a.i true awareness with identifying human emotion and however the artificial intelligence is tailored to a given situation. Can even have artificial intelligence to look specifically into someones eyes when having conversation.

umm no, facial recognition won't change the way we live, that's just completely asinine to even say out loud. Why would anyone want their face to unlock a phone instead of information inside of your head. It's amazing we survived having to find the remote every time we needed to change the channel.

The bad guys will simply disguise their faces in so many ways. Technology is a great tool that can lead law enforcement, military, and/or intelligence analysts in the right direction, as far as an ongoing investigation, but ultimately humans will have to make the decisions, not technology.

Accurarcy alone doesnt mean anything. You need the ratio from True-Positive False-Positives and False-Negatives to get a decent evaluation wheather a system is sucessfull in what its doing

If you’re a good law-abiding person then what does it matter if a machine knows who you are? Shops will target you but you don’t have to buy what they push on you. The authorities will identify you but if you haven’t done anything bad who cares? BUT it will be very, very bad if it gets into the wrong hands for illegal/unethical purposes which will happen before too long, if it hasn’t already, for here we are in 2018.
What if I am a law abiding citizen and want to have an affair (which although unethical, is my right!?) Second, the authorities make up what's right and wrong so who is going to monitor them OR are you claiming they have some divine authority? THINK!!!!!

I think facial recognition is stupid. What they haven't addressed is the fact that someone can hold a picture up of your face. This is really not secure
Aaron Barkla ok so to stop surveillance recognising your face you are going to walk around holding a picture up wherever you go. That's hardly realistic. Also the latest facial recognition on phones gets 3D information from infrared sensors, that can't be fooled by a picture.
What u are talking is 2D scan, Apple using 3D scan. You can't unlock phone with 2D photo
