SA2 Intro Comparison (Dreamcast and PS3)

- I happened to have footage of the Hero Story intro recorded for both the Dreamcast and PS3 versions of SA2 so just did this for fun basically
Specifics that no one cares about:
PAL Dreamcast version captured with Elgato HD60 S through VGA connected to OSSC, line2x mode
2012 PS3 version captured with Hauppauge HD PVR through YPbPr component at 720p (cropped to 4:3 for visual consistency with DC)

I have never seen the dreamcast version! It looks a lot better in my opinion! The colours are more vibrant, I love the sun glare, and Sonic's smirk looks better as well!
But his eye i notice when they show the shot of him flying out of the helicopter is kinda close to the edge and looks weird on the Dreamcast, Battle fixed that, the hand texture is better and camera is more fluid imo. But i can see things the Dreamcast did better, the sun glare like you said and vibrant colors (especially the city at the end of the cutscene)
@@tarheelpro87 Definitely not worth it.
I grew up with the dreamcast version so seeing the worse cutscenes in Battle is sort of surreal lol
In the dreamcast version sonic is using his old shoes and not the soap ones which I find funny.
@@MrSafira13i think in the original you get them near the middle of city escape as an upgrade.
Just goes to show how advanced the Dreamcast was back then.
Gamecube can run Sonic Adventure 2, Sega just didn't take the effort to port the game properly
nobody is talking about dreamcast vs gamecube, gamecube port is fine, its just how impressive on its own @@doubt2022
@@doubt2022 This is true. But the Dreamcast still had the power over the other consoles of that generation. Nothing was pumping out consistent, "arcade perfect" games back then. Leastwise not with the same visual quality and performance.
Yes and no. Dreamcast was impressive hardware for the time but c'mon. This isnt a case of hardware, its a porting issue. If it was a legitimate remake then we could talk hardware
the issue is this was NEVER meant to be a remake, it was a faithful port of the exact engine using slightly better framing, graphics and model textures, if it were a remake it wouldnt have kept most of the original assets. comparing the gamecube though which was more powerful than the ps2, to the dreamcast is an extreme change, saying as one came out during peak n64 time and the other during pc gamings comeuppance. Dreamcast vs Gamecube will always be a comparison of gamecube having better graphics but dreamcast being so impressive for its time

0:32 I hadn't noticed before but sonic spins more in the dreamcast version
And the scene flows better when it switches to the next angle
I forgot how sobic went from his normal shoes to soap shoes mid cutscene in the intro.
I think he changes the shoes in 0:36 but if thats it then adventure 2 battle just… bad
0:37 he puts his leg up in adventure 2 battle but in adventure 2 he is pulling the soap shoe onto his foot
sobic 💀

How does Sega, in every single Adventure port, worsen the game? It's genuinely incredible how incompetent they are sometimes
Then again, The Dreamcast and Gamecube uses different engines to run games 🤷
What do you mean by worsen ?
Looks way better, quit bitchen
@@teko4752 Make the game worse
@@teko4752The battle ports have 100s of mistakes in the cutscenes that make them look worse. There’s a video about it
We really need a whole in one Dreamcast restoration mod like DX has.
Its much less like obvious with battle but side by side it makes such a difference.
Like even the subtitles are clearer on the first original like what the hell?
To be fair when it comes to the clarity that could come down to the recording equipment, the PS3 footage for Battle was recorded about 7 years ago on an old Hauppauge capture card, whereas my Dreamcase footage was done with an OSSC and HDMI capture device (although I do prefer the original font a bit)
Battle Is fine, for the most part, all it needs is a fix to those cutscenes and you've got yourself the definitive SA2 experience
@@MiniCrew11 And the grinding controls, for some reason Sega can't get analog controls to work right on their Dreamcast ports.
@Vicy5Modapk they need to fix the adventure duology remakes on steam, battle could do with a few changes here and there, like the ones mentioned, and DX needs to stop being ported using a port of a port of a port of a port
@@MiniCrew11 We need them more for console , grinding in sa2 is probably the only thing that mods have not fixed on the pc port so far. Hopefully we do see adventure remasters around when the third sonic movie comes out though.

How does the Dreamcast versiok look so much brighter? It seems like every port the game lost some magic.
From what I recall there is some sort of change/issue with how Battle processes material colours, leading to duller looking textures overall, although in this video's case it could also be due to how I recorded the two games.
The Battle footage was taken with component video from the PS3 version which I've had sitting on a hard drive for years, whereas the Dreamcast was recorded using its VGA output through an OSSC so that could have affected recording quality to some extent
I remember hearing somewhere that SA2 had a lighting system at one point during development, something akin to the SA1 Lantern Engine. This was dropped from the final version of the game. You can see this in old trailers of the game. Apparently, when the game was ported to the GameCube, they accidentally enabled this lighting in cutscenes, but did not apply the proper fixes that were required.
It might be due to no specular on Sonic's muzzle, and the loss of the sun glare on the scene where Sonic jumps off the helicopter.
It's amazing that SEGA manages to make a port look and sometimes even play worse than the original releases. SADX, SA2 Battle, Colors Ultimate. All of them suffer major visual downgrades. SA2 Battle definitely suffers the least, but it's still worse. It's a shame that these are the only official versions still available.
All plays fine to me and I can play in 4K on Colors on Xbox one X and my Series X and I have 100% flies on Both Adventure games and Chaos Chao on Adventure 2 Battle Xbox
And dreamcast was released in 1998... incredible
Ah, seeing that intro on the DC still gives them same goosebumps as when I was a kid
I think the Battle version looks a bit better. I like the darker colors; I like the blue circle around Sonic spinning at the end; and I think the camera is a bit more fluid than in the original, specifically at 0:30
nope for me without the dlc its better
@@adnan_honest_jihadist5775 What about it specifically?
The blue circle is just a visual effect that's coming from the sun. It shouldn't be showing at this angle.
Disagree, I prefer the more vibrant colors, the transition at 0:35 looks smoother in the original, while it has a hard cut in the port, and the "blue circle" is the sunflare effect but glitched
That's fine. We can't ALL be right.
0:27 normal shoes on dreamcast
He replaced his shoes with soap shoes, off-screen in the speed of sound 🗿
@@gyropizzamozzarella1012 make sense
If they ever make Sonic Adventure 3, at least the Switch port might be the worst.
Giving me the, Dragon ball movies being so different from its cinema counterpart
I find it hilarious how they keep talking about remastering and remaking and making sequels to the Adventure games when they can't even be bothered to PORT them right. 😂🤣
“Talk about low budget flights, no food or movies… I’m outta here!”
I admit that the GameCube version seem to be more rounded, while the Dreamcast still seemed a little blocky. However, the resolution for Dreamcast was a lot better than the game cube… all in all, I would love to see what they would do for the remake of this and the first adventures game… The DX Directors cut was awesome but I would love to see if they can go even further with it
I played both and both are good
As a child, because of this game, I spent so many years of my life associating sun light flares to Sonic Adventure.
Notice how in the dreamcast version he doesn’t have his soap shoes in the first few frames. This is probably because they made a deal late into development
Do you think the weird overlapping dialogue is still present in the dreamcast version
Yeah cause thats an issue with the english lines vs the japanese lines
It makes sense though, Sonic cutting Shadow off when he calls Sonic a faker makes sense because people do that when they're mad.
I've never heard anyone say people in real life have bad audio mixing because they cut someone off in an argument.
Yeah while it's probably technically not supposed to overlap, I do like how Sonic interrupts Shadow in the Green Forest scene
What I find funnier though is how Sonic can interrupt *himself* in some scenes :P
If you look closely you'll realize that for half of the cutscene in the Dreamcast version Sonic is wearing his Speedster Shoes (yes that's the name of them)
Since this is adventure, would they not be the hi-speed shoes according to the xbox avatar name?
0:46 The world looks so much more vibrant and colorful in the DC version! What the hell happened?
hasta el .jpg que usaron para representar la ciudad se ve mil veces mejor en Dreamcast...
We es el mismo nomas que más oscuro
I have both the DC version and the GameCube port of SA2, and the consoles for them had been kept in the basement, so I didn't have to try to get a PC version to play it now in my adulthood. The DC version is better in my opinion, but I really like that in the ported version, an image of metors get shown so you can see how high or low the stats of your chao are. I also have the DC version of SA1. (My parents bought those games and consoles for me when I was a kid.)
Looking at the comments I'm in the minority but I actually prefer the Battle version over the Dreamcast version. The shapes are rounder and more clean and the camera is more focused.
Yeah with the Hero story intro I would say there are definitely upsides to both versions, with the Dreamcast version having all the visual effects intact but Battle refining the camera angles to look nicer and more dynamic. I personally prefer the DC character models slightly but you can't really go wrong with either model I'd say.
We can all agree. Sonic adventure only belongs to the dreamcast and gamecube
GameCube had the same version as the PS3 💀
@@The_Guy1337People are stupid I guess
How about I tell I can just play it on my Xbox 360 and Xbox one X and Xbox Series X and PC all with vibrant colors and stuff.
Honestly the steam version is superior because of mods

Never forget what they took from you. COMIC SANS FOREVER.
How did they mess up the animation of him grabbing onto the helicopter after breaking out like the new one just looks worse and less dynamic like huh?????

Dreamcast for the win
PS3?!
Where was I?
On the PS store back in 2018, I think. I remember because I remember purchasing Sonic Adventure and its SADX addon on my (now dead) PS3 and there was Sonic Adventure 2 on there that I later went ahead and purchased
Why no one in the coments can be honest? The remastered version looks soo much better
Thanks you I know right it drives me nuts and I always had vibrant colors on Xbox 360 and Xbox one X and now My New Xbox Series X gives it Auto HDR and I have 247 hours with 100% all in all The Remaster looks better.
Well it shouldn't. Most of the visual differences in the HD version are unintentional bugs.
No it doesn't
Am i the only one seeing sonic with two different shoes or nah
Your not the only one
Just SA1 all over again where each point out does itself in terms of poor quality.
It's pretty funny but due to nostalgia and the fact they fixed his shoes (How did nobody animating that cutscene notice his shoes were the wrong ones [0:28] ) I like the port more however I do acknowledge the brighter lighting as well as animation that blends into other scenes more smoothly, specifically 0:33 - 0:35, appears more visually appealing.
I just love that A PlayStation Adventure exists and Xbox
I like the new ver
It looks HD
They should've kept those few seconds with the classic shoes 😅

I only played a crack of sa2 battle back in 2018 when my dad installed it for me (aka hacked it)
Too bad they didn't removed the door
Character models and continuity are better on PS3 but everything else is better on Dreamcast
The Dreamcast one is better in every way… but when sonic busts out the door he can be seen wearing his regular shoes and when he jumps off the plane wing he can be seen with his Soap Shoes, meanwhile on the PS3 he has the correct model in every scene.
I think he put on the soap she's after he got off the plane
