Inches from disaster on the Reef - 2020 Episode 6
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 жов 2024
- The cameras were running as we very, very narrowly escaped the clutches of a raging current trying to smash our boat onto the coral reef at Lady Musgrave Island. We still get cold chills watching the heart stopping footage of our near shipwreck.
Sailing to the island, the largest pod of dolphins we’ve seen on the Great Barrier Reef put on a magical display around the bow of ‘Our Dreamtime’.
And from Our Galley Karen shows how to make a very simple, but stunning, treat for ‘Sundowners’ get togethers.

Excellent footage.., excellent navigation...👍🏆 enjoy beautiful Lady Musgrave...👍
Thanks Paul. Glad you enjoyed our little moment. Lady Musgrave is truly beautiful that’s for sure. Cheers
I get cold chills looking too. It was so obvious the current took you, it was not your steering. Glad you had the cameras running so we got to see. Even if you check all information on when the slack is supposed to be, it does not always happen the way predicted, I guess there are more factors involved in what the exact outcome will be. I skippered my boat around the world 2016-19, and even though I consider myself quite experienced now, I beleive that in some occations I needed to rely on some luck.
Great video, and you are a super nice couple
Thanks so much for the lovely words Linda. We really appreciate it. We have 19,000 miles under our belts and still learn something every day we sail. Despite our best efforts, making a mistake can happen. Making the same one twice is what we work very, very hard to avoid. Cheers!
I was turning my phone to port as I was watching that!! Time for a coffee I think! Stay safe, see ya heading south 😎
Thanks Liam. Coffee is always a good idea. We're keen to get south now but we'll be sitting out some contrary winds until Thursday by the look of the forecast. Cheers!
Following you now after your post on FB. Very nice boat and so good to see older real folks pulling on lines and dodging the reefs. Sail on! Anthony Herald
Thanks so much Anthony. When I walked out of the office at 54 and embarked on the cruising life, I thought I was doing it early. While we were younger than many of those sailing around us I now realise that we should have started much younger. I 'wasted' way too many years working to spend money on crap we didn't need. Our motto is now "We're here for a good time not a long time so make the most of it." Cheers
Thanks for the lesson on such a beautiful anchorage.
Hope to drop the hook there sometime, armed with a bit of knowledge from you.
Cheers. 👍😊⛵️
Glad you enjoyed the video Bruce. Lady Musgrave is spectacular, you'll love it
Great video guys! Leaning to port too!
Thanks Kim. Glad you enjoyed it and hope you like the new one out too. Cheers!
Oooohhhhhhh pucker factor x10 lolol
Yep - a certain amount of that reflex happening at the time. Cheers!
@@Dreamtimesail hahaha
Nail biting 😲
We didn't quite have time for that but we were certainly a bit anxious for a while. Scariest moment we've had.
Hi great video guys we hired a catamaran and sailed the Whitsundays it was amazing, we bought the 100 magic miles book and wondering if that was the book you used in your episode or was it a different book for the east coast. We are on the west coast and thinking of getting into sailing just not sure if my lovely wife would like a monohull
Hi Frank, Glad you enjoyed the video. Hope you can ride along with us some more too. The 100 Magic Miles Book is fantastic but only basically covers the Whitsundays. We also use Noel Patrick's Cruising the Curtis Coast and Alan Lucas's Cruising the Coral Coast. Hope this helps. Cheers
Hi Guys, guessing you don't have a bow thruster to help push the nose around?
Yep you’re right .... No bow thruster on Our Dreamtime
Close calls like that will make 10 gray hairs appear instantly and 5 hairs fall out..
We'd suggest that's probably a conservative estimate.
What channel did you use for internal chat? (good idea)
Hi Greg, we use a pair of reasonably inexpensive small UHF radios for bow to helm coms. (Marriage savers)
@@Dreamtimesail thanks, great idea!
Oh for Gods sake. Been in there 50 times without all that drama. Port port port!!
Get off the bow and steer the boat.
Sorry Peter, are you suggesting we shouldn't have a lookout on the bow going into reef systems or that Karen, a mere female, shouldn't be on the helm?
@@Dreamtimesail Keyboard commando's. With that current and dodgy reefs everywhere, better lucky with a good attitude and team work than thinking your great and run aground.
@@ateamNM Thanks so much. With over 19,000 nautical miles under our belts over the last 10 years we still learn every time we lift the anchor and, as humans, do make a few mistakes. We could be fake and not show our screw ups on video but we'd rather try and show the real cruising life. Our attitude to keyboard trolls is that they make bigger fools of themselves than us. Cheers and thanks again for the support. It is much appreciated.
