Louisiana Becomes First State to Mandate Display of 10 Commandments in Schools

- Louisiana has become the first state to require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom.
Republican Governor Jeff Landry signed HB71 into law on Wednesday after it passed in the Louisiana Senate in a 30-8 vote and then passed in the state House by a 79-16 vote last month.
The American Civil Liberties Union vows to challenge the law, and the case could go to the U.S. Supreme Court.
If the law survives legal challenges, every Louisiana classroom from kindergarten to the university level, which receives state funding, will be required to display the commandments "on a poster or framed document that is at least eleven inches by fourteen inches." The commandments displays would be paid for by private donations so the state isn't funding them.

What about the parents? They need to be modeling these commandments for their children or else the children will not practice them at school. Parents/caregivers are a child’s first teacher. It’s already a struggle to get students to follow basic instructions in class.

I think that making lunch for every child (or even just several of the children) in school every single school day probably would cost exponentially more than just printing out one poster for every classroom does.

They should then write them in their entirety. Not just abbreviated words. Write them exactly as God wrote them and they will make a more powerful statement of what God expected for his people. All 10 are exactly written in stone for a reason. Especially the fourth commandment in Exodus 20 versus 8- 11.

The separation of state and church is becoming nonexistent. Our founding fathers would be devastated.
Almost every one of the founding fathers was deeply religious and so was American culture. They would not be disappointed. The intention behind the separation of church and state was for the government not to rule over religious matters because God is above the government. I'm glad the founding fathers made so many decisions based on their religious beliefs, like declaring the existence of human rights. We're all endowed with certain unalienable rights given to us by our Creator.

Why force the 10 commandments but not the bill of rights nor Declaration of Independence? This not even mentioning the fact Louisiana ranks 47th in nation for education. 1st commandment obviously violates the establishment clause cause it requires worship to a single deity that is the Hebrew warrior god. As a Hindu, I definitely think this law is unconstitutional because it explicitly requires religious instruction. Also historians agree, 10 commandments origin lies in the Egyptian 42 confessions of Ma’at so the commandments are not even the original source material.
The lord God gave the 10 commandments he wrote them in stone and gave them to Moses. Moses carried them down from mount Sinai. He mistakenly said Moses gave the laws.

(elementary to the university) Since the 1960's we've stripped that part of our national heritage. Now our kids are more lost, angry and confused than ever. Our kids are taught that the highest identity that they have is a sexual one. A few days ago I watched a video of middle school students complaining that other students are now identifying as animals, biting and scratching them.

I personally don’t think this is a big deal because schools have over stepped far more sensitive boundaries than religion. If they are doing it for historical reasons that actually makes sense because when we learn about cultures we are always directed to what their religion was along with what their spirituality and superstitions.

It was not the foundation of this country. “One nation under God” was added in 1954. The founding fathers stressed a separation of church and state to ensure a freedom in religion and government. Thomas Jefferson (a deist) is quoted as saying “And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.”

Any more info about it? I hear it here and there, but haven't really looked into it. Also, I get the feeling that it contradicts itself. By religion, I see it as a worldview. So by worldly standards, schools and what not still promote religion. Whether it be the religion of self, being in one mindset, atheism, agnostic; could be more. Doesn't have to be preached. These are my observations.

Most of the 10 commandments are okay to have just as morals, except the first one. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” is very insensitive to any students who may have other beliefs. You’re basically telling all those students that their beliefs are wrong and that’s really going to hurt some young kids perception of themselves. There’s a reason there’s a separation between church and state, it’s not because they don’t want religion in schools, but choosing one religion over any other means that anyone with differing beliefs immediately feels like an outsider when school should be a safe place for people of all beliefs.

Yep! I'm a veteran also and the hypocrisy is very heart breaking to me. How many of the people demanding the Ten Commandments be forced on the world actually have the Ten Commandments in their homes? How many teach their children the Bible? God called His people out of Babylon, He didn't tell them to rule it for Him. The world knows this more than most Christian households. The world sees the hypocrisy more than most Christians do. We can not demand that the world lives Christ's standards when most of us don't live Christ's standards.
Indeed the ten commandments greatly effected the present law system we have today. Just shows you the eternal wisdom of God and the undeniable relevance of God's Word even today.

If it's for historical purposes and not indoctrination, they should put the religious documents of every major religion in every classroom. That includes islam, hinduism, buddhism, and to go back to North American roots, they should include Native American spirituality.
