Excellent information!! Thank you so much. It's also a good idea to keep a portable solar panel with you - the type that you can unroll and are only a few inches long and maybe an inch wide when rolled up - that can help recharge your phone. Even though you don't have cell service in a grid down situation, you can keep your phone charged to continue to give you light and give you access to the information you mentioned (military survival info, etc.) assuming you have downloaded it. And if the grid is still up and it is another type of emergency you will still have cell power without the worry of your phone dying if you have no where to plug it in. Every member of your family should have one of these portable solar panels. Thanks again for all the great info that you share!! :-)
That is certainly a good idea, Mary. We will likely all have different scenarios we are working with. Personally, I hope to only use it in these 8 ways in the first couple hours after an event. As soon as I am to my bag/car/house, I should have much better ways to do all of these except for the storage of information on my SIM card. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I love reading your comments!
The one reason I have a solar charger for USB is because I have the Bible on my android devices. On public transit I like to stay aware of my surroundings, but when on a hold pattern (eg. medical appts), it is wonderful to be able read the Word...

@mrcynthiag mrcynthiag hi, in case Ms. Mary hasn't gotten back to you, the various small solar systems usually include a cord to charge your phone. If mini solar panel doesn't include the charger you require, you'll need to keep an extra one for your system in the case. But please keep the universal charging cord, as it may come in handy for someone you are with that just might have something of benefit downloaded to their phone that you may not. Teamwork, knowledge, resilience, faith, and planning is survival! God Bless!
Amen. If the grid goes down I am staying in my house and call on Jesus for help. No bug out bag for me. I need to be in a familiar setting. If the Government comes and kick down my door and drag me off to Fema camp; I will go praising the Lord and trusting him to deliver me.
I always keep a copy of my local maps downloaded for off line use. I use the Google Maps program and if you click the 3 lines at the top left of the page, then click on offline maps, you can save a copy to use after the grid goes down or even if you have lost your signal for some other reason.
I cringed when I forgot to mention that in the video. I think the offline Google maps are potentially a GREAT resource and I am so glad you mentioned it, Jack. Thank you!
Jack thank you for that. I was looking at routes out of TOronto, but did not realize I could save what I needed offline. DOH! I appreciate the fact you shared your wisdom!!

If the grid goes down, I will use my phone as; * a paper weight, to hold my novel open. * as a self protection weapon; to throw at the head of a zombie. (Just joking) Great survival tips. If you are an adult, and do not own matches, paper, and wood, and do not know how to start a fire, and cook on an open flame...it's never too late to learn... I keep a woollen blanket and tarpaulin in the boot of my car. I keep tinned food and water bottles ready at home, if earthquakes occur, or Earth is hit by an Asteroid, or the electricity grid goes down. Read The Holy Bible daily too. The bread of life. My first call, if there is still service, is to my family to let them know what has happened and to activate a preset plan to meet up at our preset location. If the grid is down, I am headed home immediately. 911 and other services will be overwhelmed and my only goal is to join up with my family for whatever is to come next. 911 won't come by and give me a ride home so, to me, it is a wasted call.
I would hope for you that you could make even one call, Jack, but in the event that you cannot, it is great that you and your family have a preset plan in place. That may be the critical key! Depending on the scenario, 911 might possibly be out of the question. Thanks for the comments
@@PREPSTEADERS I have heard that getting out an MMS text message may be much easier when the cell towers are jammed from voice calls. Supposedly, they will get through eventually if you send them and the towers are still operational.

Phone case accessory- if metal- another cutting tool. If plastic-melt to form various tools/plug leak in boat, etc. Flashlight- also use as night tracking stick. Save to notes - household chemistry recipes for things like fire from chemical reaction or other chemistry good for self defense. It doesn't necessarily pertain to a grid down situation, but the glass screen can work as a mirror. If you are lost or injured you can use it to signal for help. SOS is three short flashes, three long flashes, and three more short flashes.
mrcynthiag that not a stupid question at all. 1.) In one hand hold your phone just below Eye- level. 2.) Take your arm and extended out in front of you holding your first and second finger up to make a “V”. 3.) use the webbing between your first and second finger as a sight and rest whatever you’re trying to hit just above your webbing. 4.) when you see the light reflect on your two fingers you know that you’re hitting your target. I’ve done this before and actually was able to signal over 2 miles away. Of course it was with a mirror not with the phone.
In addition to your suggestions, other uses that I can think of for a phone in an emergency are as follows... Use the voice recording feature for important things that are spoken and need to be remembered such as directions of any kind. Use the camera to take a picture and then use the screen zoom feature to zoom in on the photo and see tiny print or other hard to see objects. Use the flashlight to send a visual distress signal. The calendar and clock might come in handy to keep track of days and time. Get a barometric pressure app that uses the phones barometer to help with self weather forecasting Incase other sources aren’t available. At least you will be able to determine if we are influenced by high or low pressure and plan accordingly. You could also use an altimeter app to help with determining your height above sea level (flood or tsunami survival). Also don’t forget about the calculator. It can be used to solve many mathematical problems. You can also listen to music and watch videos that are stored on the device to help keep yourself sane if isolated from population. If only do the latter if I had a way to keep my device charged. Also the notes section can be used to store any important information.
Very good vid, some great points. On another note, be aware of exactly where you are if you are in another town or state. It really helps in an emergency call to 911. A few years ago I was hurt severely in a fall on a farm w/ my nephew. Neither of us knew the road, let alone the address when we called 911 for an ambulance. We knew how to get to the farm, but that was it. To make a long story short we were able to give the 911 operator a land point, a water tower, south of the town we were in, they were able to meet us there. So, a good survival tip.....always be aware of your surroundings!
You are so right, George! Many of us have become so dependent on our dashboard GPS devices, we hardly pay attention to landmarks anymore. You made a very good point. Thanks for sharing!
I would like to add, that, during hurricane Irma 2 things that saved us were the ultra power saving mode on the cell phones (your cell will conserve battery power, and it can last days). Second, a solar battery charger is super helpful to keep your electronics charged when power is out.
You could use it to store your important documents (ID, credit cards, passport, marriage license, etc.) and photos of family members that we might need to look for after any kind of incident or disaster. Every few months I walk around my house and take a few pictures of each room to document what we have in our house in case it burns down . . . home owner's and renter's insurance will only cover items that you can prove you owned with pictures or receipts.
I'd be pretty worried about losing the phone and someone gets into all the id...don't own a cell phone but I know many who have lost their's. Good idea though if it's well guarded :)

We would all be better off having a Survival manual hard copy! Using the last of your phone battery for reading a manual is not wise. Definitely order a hard copy. . When the grid goes down, IF 911 is even operable, they will be overloaded with thousands of calls, so it's unlikely they could help. Be prepared to help yourself! No one will be available to help for a long time. . God bless you all..
cookiemama4, I absolutely agree with you. This video is just specifically about what you can do with the cell phone. So many have written in to say it will be useless, and I do not agree. However, it is no match for hard copies of books we should have. I believe it will be of most value in those first couple hours after an event...and that may be the extent of it. Thanks for your comment!
It's wise to have a (or several) solar phone chargers. I have only one, but I keep my Walmart battery packs charged, also. I'll use those while I'm charging the solar pack/charger.
I absolutely love your videos. I must, however, say; in a “grid down” situation emergency services will not be available and smart-phoning 911 or SOS is a pipe dream. Emergency services will be instantly overwhelmed with trying to protect the government infrastructure and its command and control. It’s foolish to think police, fire or ambulance will respond unless you are right next door and then still probably not. It will be everyone for themselves until the hysteria and panic subside and still so after. I caution anyone that thinks there will be any help other than a neighbor or in their immediate community network. Keep doing what you’re doing. I love your ideas, but had to offer the point of order above. You’re awesome.

BE VERY SAFE when handling lithium batteries. Toxic in the mineral state, toxic when mined, toxic when smelted, toxic when manufactured, toxic when it can release gas, blow up, and burn (Tesla lithium battery cars exploding), ... and all gas and shooting particles are also toxic.
Some good advice. Still, it never hurts to keep a small "bug out bag" in your car or even your purse. If the grid goes down, odds are your phone service goes with it. It's not like the old land line that ran off it's own power source. If you do find a landline still working, hope it doesn't have a cordless, those need power from the grid to work. The old standard with a cord 'might' still be working enough to get a call out. Get an old Altoids tin or something similar to it and just keep a few little things in it. Matches, compass, a bit of dryer lint in a small baggie. You can keep items that will allow you to get a little further down the road in a box the size of your wallet. I like the google maps idea on your cell, combine that with a real compass and you may actually make it. It helps to be able to look at both at the same time. Also, if you don't know how or where to start a fire, please learn. You don't want to start a fire that might get out of control and burn down where you are instead. And yes, there are people that actually have no idea and could very well do just that. One last thing, if you can, walk to work or part of the way on your day off, if close enough. It never hurts to have actual knowledge of the area you will be traveling through. Drive the backstreets every now and then. Know an alternative route as well. Main routes will be clogged with people all trying to do the same thing as you, get home. Don't expect to much help from strangers, they might not be as benevolent as they appear. Stay smart, stay calm, stay safe and we'll see you on the other side.

I always appreciate the wisdom you share. I am unsettled though by the ways in which we will try to hold on to the past. Investing time and energy in technolgy may be fruitless. It also come through in trying to stay with familiar foods. The world will have changed; we need to learn to adapt. I had watch a video today on food storage, and the guy showing people spam and canned ham and cocktail weiners...good grief, if that stuff does not kill you before the disruption, it will certainly do so after. My daughter recently powered on an old phone with a cracked screen and it was going crazy pushing buttons. Half hour later PD showed up at our house. Said a 911 hang up from an old number/ deactivated phone. Evidently it works!
Thanks for the ideas on how to use the smart phone after the grid goes down. I did want to add a caution however. As an electrical engineer, I don't recommend any kind of fire starting with the cell phone battery. Using strips of metal placed across the battery terminals shorts out the battery, which can easy cause the battery to explode. I don't recommend puncturing the battery as a last resort to start a fire. If the battery is dead, you won't generate any ignition. Instead, you will release a lot of toxic chemicals.
Great info! Most of us will have our phones with us when a grid down situation happens. Will the phone even work with an EMP type grid down? My guess it would be fried unless in a faraday cage.

Smart phones can also be "peer to peer" - they can talk to each other like old school two way radios. Keeping a memory chip like you described can also function as knowledge stores for "how 2" instructionals' separated from your regular phone. One of those solar chargers can be used for multiple users for several phones. Solar chargers can also keep a battery able to do many fires. Good to have in the pack. Blessings to you and yours.

In a grid down, cellphone can be used as a map and a navigation system, so long as you downloaded a map for offline usage ahead of time, there are apps for that. Such map could not only be used for regular navigation (without traffic updates) but also to find businesses, stores, parks etc. on a map.
All very good things to know, thank you. We have a plan... every member of my family have a plan if and when EVERYTHING goes wrong. Relax and asses the situation. Get and or have water that will last a few days if not longer. We can all do without food but we do need water. If we are close to each other, we have a "rally" point where we can get to. Once there, wait for each other. Be patient. Be careful and use what you've learned about survival. Most everything and anything can be used to stay safe. If we are far apart, we have to assume that we know it may not be a smart move to get to each other right away. That safe place or rally point will always be there but we may not be able to get there right away. ALWAYS plan ahead and know where to look for food and water. If it's winter and where we live in Montana, we need a warm shelter for those cold days and nights. An ALWAYS remember our Lord will be with us always. There's so much more to say about "getting by" but, that's a good start. Safe place, water, food and shelter is where it starts.
That rally point is very important for family to know about. I will discuss this with my family on Father's Day. Regardless of the eyerolls and strange stares🤪🤪.

most phones have a calculator function, you can download a ballistics calculator for free, there are lots of maps that you can download for free, there are flashlight apps that you can download which can also act as an SOS Beacon using your flash, there's also conversion tables that you can download if you need to know how to convert something to another unit of measure or distance, there are also some apps that will allow you to use your Wi-Fi to set up a small Network in a limited area to where you can communicate without service to another phone
lastly there are some apps that can use your camera to measure distance if you know the height of an object in the background that would be great for construction and a variety of other applications
Informative video, but most likely after the first few hours, you're gonna want to ditch your phone and spread some distance between you and it to stay safe. Commit the military survival guides and manuals to memory and get a real flash light and fire starter. Phones are tracking devices... Love your videos, please stay safe and be Blessed!!
In SOME situations I would totally agree with you! On the other hand, a car wreck for example even if you can not tell where YOU are, they can eventually track you down. So it is a double edged sword that they ARE tracking devices.
Thank you for this great info! Also, you’re so beautiful! Not only on the outside but you seem to have an inner beauty that radiates from you. 💗Thank you for your great channel!
I have solar chargers, so I downloaded all of my Audible books so that I can still use them. I also have drawing apps. If you go in and color one small item, you can access those pages without wifi or service. You won't be able to open pages without any coloring. I discovered this while camping.
Best thing to do in a situation like that is to prepare as if you are in the pioneer days. A fire starter or matches will be your best friend and water proof shoes and clothing. Keep prayerful and stay together.

Anybody they might not know Him you might be the only light that would brings the message to them , so do it stop hesitating.! We might not the get chance again ! God Bless you !❤️🙏❤️🙏
While I found some of these tips beneficial to know, thank you for sharing---if there is truly a "grid" down situation, it is highly likely that 911 or SOS responders won't get the call and if by chance they do, they won't have enough staff to go around and respond, which I'm still a little unclear about what they are expected to do anyway for a "grid down" event. If it's just a grid down in an isolated location, why would you call 911 and not just leave your location and proceed to a safer place?
Thank you for the comment, Mylightofhope. With the potential for many areas to be effected differently, I think some people may be able to reach emergency services. If the power and internet went down at your work, the first thing you would attempt is a 911 call just to even understand the scope of the outage. If that is down, it will be serious enough to head quickly toward home without expecting any help to come. Too many scenarios to cover in one video, but hopefully some ideas were presented that will come in handy to know depending on the situation we each find ourselves in!

A phone with OTG (On The Go) capabilities or similar, would be a BONUS. Data and Vid files can be accessed through separate memory cards that plug into them. Personal Documents & PDFs can be kept off line till needed. Prepping Videos can be filed away into folders. Conversion to video phone codecs would be preferred. The carrying of a portable Solar Charger would be a Must. Phone could be slowly recharged from streetlights, shop windows, inside well lit supermarkets/ buildings etc
There are flashlight apps available for tablets too, even if they don't have a built-in flashlight. With such an app, you turn up the display brightness to maximum and then activate the app's feature you want (steady light, strobing light, SOS are typical options). When the tablet's display is on maximum brightness the power will drain out of the battery quicker than normal, but a flashlight in a pinch can be very handy.

This idea is useful in an emergency, grid down or other situations. While you still have a signal, change your voice mail. Leave important info like your location, where you are headed, etc. If you lose power or signal someone could call your voice mail.

reaLLY good idea
Awesome! Hi Mary's Nest! It's awesome to see you on Ms. Christa's channel! I love me some Ms. Christa, Ms. Mary, and Ms. Carolyn Spirit, shine and knowledge every morning with my coffee! You all are my favorite, faithful, powerhouse women, and I am so thankful get to watch and learn from you all!
God Bless!
IF THE GRID GONES DOWN, I CAN ALWAYS CALL ON JESUS....
I've done it before and I'd do it again.
Amen. If the grid goes down I am staying in my house and call on Jesus for help. No bug out bag for me. I need to be in a familiar setting. If the Government comes and kick down my door and drag me off to Fema camp; I will go praising the Lord and trusting him to deliver me.
God won't come I guarantee that
AMEN AMEN
Amen.... pray without ceasing.
Thank you!
Jack Edwards thank you 😊
Jack thank you for that. I was looking at routes out of TOronto, but did not realize I could save what I needed offline. DOH! I appreciate the fact you shared your wisdom!!

If the grid goes down, I will use my phone as;
* a paper weight, to hold my novel open.
* as a self protection weapon; to throw at the head of a zombie.
(Just joking)
Great survival tips.
Keep safe beautiful children of God. Make sure that we keep helping each other, no matter how frightenned we are...God is with us.

Just after hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area the only things you could get out was text messages! Those small burst of data was the only thing we could get through. System was totally overburdened.
Great emergency plan. I think I should discuss this with my family. Although they recently mentioned that I should be banned from UA-cam. They think I am getting bad ideas that are causing me to panic, but I beg to differ🤔👍. I am trying to save their lives.
If a bear is attacking you, just pretend you have to take a call, motion for him to hold on, then walk away while chatting to nobody. Works every time.
Lmao!!!
you could also call out to Bruno, "It's for you" throw it into a bush, then split while he tries to find it.

Portable solar panels (like goal zero) are readily available on Amazon and many prices under 50.00. Throw one in your pack, purse, or car and your phone will never be without power again. Note: don’t by the cheap small units. They don’t last and take many days to charge a phone. The tri-fold 15-20w panels are best.
I have more uses but wife fussing for me to go to sleep. Lol Hope this helps.

It doesn't necessarily pertain to a grid down situation, but the glass screen can work as a mirror. If you are lost or injured you can use it to signal for help. SOS is three short flashes, three long flashes, and three more short flashes.

Awesome idea Julie! Thank you!
Julie Baker Thanks for that additional and viral info. God bless you!
mrcynthiag that not a stupid question at all.
@@jritter1 Great advice! Thank you!
So do EMPs not always damage phones? I thought it killed all devices?
It would be good to have a solar charger in your possession too.
May Jesus have mercy on our souls. GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE.

Now they can trace the phone in about 3 seconds to pinpoint the phones location.
Galena, that is an excellent feature on many newer phones to help conserve "battery juice". I agree with you! Thank you for the comment!
This is the end game. Cathrina will be mild in comparison.A very diffrent kettle of fish.Ditch phone before they track you.
A Faraday cage is the only way to protect electronics. Look into what I say if you are a person who wants to preserve information or even drive your car after an event like this.
Great idea thank you so much.

I'll use those while I'm charging the solar pack/charger.
...I have a Boy Scout manual that is pretty informative .
I forgot about the compass app! Downloading it now. THANK YOU, CHRISTA.

Amen to that

I always appreciate the wisdom you share. I am unsettled though by the ways in which we will try to hold on to the past. Investing time and energy in technolgy may be fruitless. It also come through in trying to stay with familiar foods. The world will have changed; we need to learn to adapt. I had watch a video today on food storage, and the guy showing people spam and canned ham and cocktail weiners...good grief, if that stuff does not kill you before the disruption, it will certainly do so after. Rather than trying to preserve tech like cell phones & computers, would we not be wiser developing new skills? Havingg an EDC with flashlight, a bike to get home....Respectfully looking for your feedback...WARM greetings from TOronto! p.s. SOY Granules instead of spam!!

My daughter recently powered on an old phone with a cracked screen and it was going crazy pushing buttons. Half hour later PD showed up at our house. Said a 911 hang up from an old number/ deactivated phone. Evidently it works!
You can use the phone as a signal mirror by flashing the reflection of the sun off the screen. Great vid. Thanks.
Thanks Bill Harris.
Thank you Bill, for that info.
Wow... Love a women who has this mindset! Great stuff!
Great info! Most of us will have our phones with us when a grid down situation happens.
Will the phone even work with an EMP type grid down? My guess it would be fried unless in a faraday cage.
FYI I used to build tower sites, they all have battery backup cabinet and also diesel generators for backup power just saying.

Regardless of the eyerolls and strange stares🤪🤪.

most phones have a calculator function, you can download a ballistics calculator for free, there are lots of maps that you can download for free, there are flashlight apps that you can download which can also act as an SOS Beacon using your flash, there's also conversion tables that you can download if you need to know how to convert something to another unit of measure or distance, there are also some apps that will allow you to use your Wi-Fi to set up a small Network in a limited area to where you can communicate without service to another phone
plus you can use the phone for entertainment downloading movies or games cuz things can get boring in a shtf situation
my phone has a built-in FM radio that uses the headphones as an antenna
lastly there are some apps that can use your camera to measure distance if you know the height of an object in the background that would be great for construction and a variety of other applications
Rodney you have added a good number of ideas here that, depending on a person's personal scenario, might come in super handy. Thank you for sharing!
Rodney how do you "use your Wi-Fi to set up a small Network " ??? I can see a use for that now....
Who knew you were such a techie? Good data.
This is probably the most important thing said here.
In SOME situations I would totally agree with you! On the other hand, a car wreck for example even if you can not tell where YOU are, they can eventually track you down. So it is a double edged sword that they ARE tracking devices.
That's what I was thinking to,

A Faraday cage is the only way to protect electronics. Look into what I say if you are a person who wants to preserve information or even drive your car after an event like this.
Street lights? Supermarket lights? These work without a grid? I think not. Use the sun for the solar charger.
when the grid goes down I'll reach for my shotgun, with lots of buckshot & slugs
lol!
In.
Hahahaha
Great topic. Thanks
They can track you, pitch it. In fire!!!!
You could put a copy of the New Testament on it

This idea is useful in an emergency, grid down or other situations. While you still have a signal, change your voice mail. Leave important info like your location, where you are headed, etc. If you lose power or signal someone could call your voice mail.
ty. the project gutenberg website has a free KJV bible download
it may also possible to share data on those phone computers with the right usb cords
Thanks, Eliz!
